International Academy of Nursing Editors – INANE 2012
Montreal, Canada – August 1-3, 2012
2
WElCoME MEssAgE
Bienvenue, welcome – to the 29th annual meeting of INANE – International Academy of Nursing Editors. We, at CJNR
(Canadian Journal of Nursing Research), are proud to host this year’s conference in Montreal. This is only the second time
in its history that an INANE conference has been held in Canada!
Those who have been coming to INANE conferences since 1981, and those who have recently joined, know that INANE is
an organization that functions as a “non” organization inasmuch as there is no formal board of directors, no by-laws, no
elected or appointed positions, and no membership dues. It extends membership to anyone associated with a nursing
publication. It is an organization that does serious work but does not take itself too seriously.
In 1981, a handful of editors of nursing journals saw the need to create an organization to promote best publishing
practices by exchanging information, learning about trends in publishing, sharing wisdom gained from experience, and
supporting and enjoying each other’s company. Although the number of nursing publication titles has grown substantially
over the years, this vision remains. Our membership now extends to publishers, reviewers, and to anyone associated with
nursing’s knowledge dissemination enterprises. In fact, the need for an organization such as INANE is needed now more
than ever before.
Cast back to 1981, before words such as globalization, Internet, e-mail, evidence-based practice, social media and the like
had entered our lexicon. It was also a time before any of us had ever heard of, let alone considered the effects on
publishing of evidence-based practice, impact factors, e-journals, open access, self-plagiarism, copyright, and interactive
and multi-media communications. These changes have caused a revolution in the publishing world and will continue to
shape the evolution and transformation of nursing publishing.
We have planned an exciting three days of study and learning together. We will be considering some of the many,
complex issues that as editors, publishers, and those responsible for disseminating knowledge to nursing and the health
care system have been and need to think about and face. We have called upon our talented membership to share their
knowledge, expertise, and experiences with us. We have invited respected thinkers in the publishing world to help inform
us and to frame some of the current debates. We will be considering such challenges as how to broaden the dialogue to
become more inclusive of diverse ideas, ethical issues for editors and publishers, new publishing models and challenges
from those responsible for producing journals, best practice guidelines for publishers, building editorial boards,
succession planning, and the needs of editors from reviewers. In addition, we have invited WAME (World Association of
Medical Editors) to meet INANE and to listen about WAME’s evolution and editors’ responses to some of the abovementioned challenges. We have also planned a session on the Canadian healthcare system, given that healthcare is such
a hot topic everywhere in the world. And there is so much more. We have an exciting Poster Session on a wide range of
topics that reflect the diversity of challenges faced by editors and publishers.
An important aspect of INANE is to network and encourage participation. The sessions have been planned to be
interactive to encourage participation so to give everyone voice. We begin the conference with a ‘meet and greet’ and
end with an interactive wrap up session. We will have an opportunity to network during the opening reception, mealtime
and breaks, and during an evening dinner cruise along the beautiful St. Lawrence River.
Montreal is known for producing quality entertainers. Think of Cirque du Soleil, Celine Dion, and Leonard Cohen who call
Montreal, ‘home’. Although less known but just as highly entertaining is Derek Drummond, a professor emeritus of
McGill’s School of Architecture and former VP of Alumni Affairs who will introduce you to Montreal.
We are grateful for the generosity and financial support of our sponsors listed on pages 28-29. In becoming a sponsor of
INANE, they have supported nursing and nursing scholarship. This conference could not have taken place without their
vital support.
When we ‘volunteered’ to host the 2012 INANE conference at the 2008 INANE conference in Padua, Italy, 2012 seemed
eons away. After four years of thinking and planning, the conference is upon us. It is with an open heart that I welcome
you and your guests. May you have a wonderful, productive, fun, and memorable conference and may you leave
energized, inspired, and excited by the ideas and the new colleagues and friends made.

This workshop will focus upon publication ethics, a topic we all deal with in our work as
editors. Both presenters are elected members of Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and
participate on an international level with review of ethical issues editors deal with from all
disciplines. After a brief description of COPE activities and a review of common publishing
ethical issues, the workshop will become interactive with tables of participants examining an
ethical “case” and then applying COPE flowcharts to achieve a resolution/response. Groups
will then report/discuss small group outcomes to the larger group. The goal of this workshop
is to assist editors in becoming comfortable with using the COPE flowsheets as a resource
when dealing with ethical issues in their journals.

This session will review best practices for editors with an emphasis on the process of

Systematic review is a complex methodology for analyzing the literature on a given topic to
determine the current state of the science. While the methodology is intended to introduce a
high level of rigor to the synthesis of the knowledge on a given topic, not all systematic
reviews are created equal. Because of the credibility and sophistication of this level of
analysis, articles are unfortunately emerging in the literature titled as systematic reviews
when this is not the case. This presentation will provide an overview of systematic review
methodology and provide attendees with the ability to discern systematic review from other
approaches to literature synthesis.

Becoming a new journal editor or editorial board member can be a daunting task. To make
the transition easier and to sustain positive outcomes for the publication, advanced planning
is needed. Succession planning is one way to make the transition successful. Succession
planning is a process for identifying and developing internal people with the potential to fill
key leadership positions in an organization. In the editorial world, this includes editors,
editorial board members and columnists. Tips and recommendations for effective succession
planning for these roles will be offered. Authors and manuscript reviewers are often a source
of talent and they can be cultivated and developed into regular columnists, editorial board
members, and editors.

Inter-Faculty Collaboration for the Publication of the Whitireia Nursing Journal: A Sustainable and Mutually
Beneficial Model
kerri Arcus, Coordinating Editor, Whitireia Nursing Journal, Whitireia, New Zealand
Abstract:
The Whitireia Nursing Journal has been published annually since 1994. Uninterrupted publication has been possible since
its inception due to a successful collaboration between two partners: the Faculty of Health (Nursing Studies) and the Faculty
of Arts (Diploma in Publishing). The journal publishes articles from nursing faculty and students and also provides a forum
for academic discussion with the local professional community. The journal is accessible on electronic databases (e.g:
Proquest) and is also distributed in hard copy format. For the Faculty of Health (nursing studies) the journal contributes to
the ongoing development of a research culture, advancement of academic scholarship, and provides opportunities to write
for publication. Original work from undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty are sought. Articles include the
dissemination of research and reflection on practice. The culturally distinctive approach of the journal reflects the bicultural
context of Aotearoa New Zealand. For the Faculty of Arts, the journal provides a real-time industry project for Diploma in
Publishing students. A key aspect of this course is the project management of a publication by students, encompassing every
aspect of the process including concept design, editing of manuscripts and liaising with the ‘client’ (nursing). As the only full
time training course for publishing in New Zealand, this practically focused programme is highly regarded and lecturers are
respected practitioners in their industry who oversee the project to ensure its quality and timely publication. This long term
collaboration has resulted in a mutually beneficial and sustainable model for both parties.

Abstract:
In 2008, the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, and Managing Editor for JANAC conducted a 90-minute writer's workshop for
attendees at the association’s annual meeting. Workshop objectives included helping participants prepare manuscripts to
increase the probability of acceptance; describing the importance of manuscript revision in the publication process, and
responding to reviewer comments in a proactive manner. The workshop arose from editorial frustrations with poorly prepared
manuscripts and evidence that some manuscripts were from first-time authors who were in need of support.
In 2009, we expanded the workshop to a full-day preconference. We were able to add sessions on using the APA manual to
assure proper formatting, submitting papers through the online system, and understanding the peer-review process. The
preconference was repeated at the 2010 and 2011 annual meetings.
Participants in the preconferences evaluated the sessions positively. They said that their goals for the workshop were met
(100% agreed in 2010; 83% agreed in 2011) and that they would be able to use the information from the workshop to
improve their professional writing (93% agreed in 2010; 100% agreed in 2011). Although only a few workshop attendees
have submitted and published manuscripts to date, an indirect outcome of the preconferences has been that many
participants have volunteered to review for JANAC and we have "grown our own" cadre of manuscript reviewers.
Individual preconference sessions have been recorded and offered to viewers on our website (www.
nursesinaidscarejournal.org) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ANACJournal) to provide authors with additional
writing resources.

What’s in a Name? Rebranding a Journal
Jane flanagan, PhD, ANP-BC, Associate Professor, Boston College Connell School of Nursing
Abstract:
Background: Originally conceived of as a newsletter for the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association – International
(NANDA-I) the International Journal of Nursing Terminologies and Classifications (IJNTC) blossomed under several former
editors to become the journal for authors advancing the work of NANDA-I. As the organization and journal have grown
internationally, NANDA-I and the publishing company recognized the need to make changes to the journal to increase the
international appeal and readership.
Process: In 2009 with the appointment of a new Editor, the publishing team from Wiley- Blackwell and the Executive Director
of NANDA-I discussed ideas aimed at improving the journal. This poster presentation will highlight the process the Editor
followed to make changes to the journal including surveying the Editorial Board and proposing changes to the current readers
through editorials and the NANDA-I web page. Changes to the journal including the Editorial Board, the aims and scope,
format, and the name to the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge will be discussed.
Discussion: The Journal has been re-named and re-launched with a new broadened focus, Editorial Board, reviewer pool,
format, and design. Other changes are ongoing – applying for ranking, protecting against plagiarism.
Conclusion: Although to date only one issue has been published, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and appears
to have led to increased number and improved quality of submissions.

The Power of Journals to Influence Nurse Leadership Development: A Mixed Methods Study
lee A. galuska, RN, MSN, University of Connecticut, School of Nursing, Hartford, CT, United States
Abstract:
The importance of lifelong learning for the maintenance of competency for nurses has been recognized since the time of
Nightingale (1969). The ANA has established an expectation for lifelong learning for effective nurse performance (2010). A
review of the literature related to the reading practices of nurses as a mechanism for lifelong learning revealed very little
recent evidence. The role of professional literature in influencing nursing leadership development at all levels has not been
studied. This poster will describe the findings of a study of the utilization of nursing journals by nurses in Connecticut and
their perceptions of the usefulness of content in two popular journals for their leadership learning.
A descriptive/exploratory survey will be completed during April 2012. A sample of 25,000 nurses in the database of licensed
nurses in CT, and a focused sample of nurses in one CT hospital will be surveyed. The survey will be sent via email to nurses
in the sample and include a link to an electronic questionnaire. Descriptive and correlational statistics will be reported to
describe relationships between demographic characteristics and reading practices and perceptions of journal leadership
content.
A content analysis of articles and editorials published in AJN and the journal, Nursing, during the period from 11/2010
-10/2011 was completed using Krippendorf’s (2004) method. Leadership content was coded and descriptive analysis
completed. The content analysis revealed that leadership content is present in these two widely-read journals but their
opportunity to further support nurse learning about leadership is significant.

Mentorship Matters: A Formal Relationship to Develop Writing and Editing Skills
Andrew d. Harding, MS, RN, CEN, NEA-BC, FAHA, FACHE, New London, CT, United States;
Jean A. proehl, RN, MN, CEN, CPEN, FAEN, New London, CT, United States
Abstract:
The Academy of Emergency Nursing (AEN) sponsors a formal mentoring program which matches applicants with AEN Fellows
who have expertise and experience in the applicants’ areas of interest. The EMINENCE Program (Establishing Mentors
InterNationally for Emergency Nurses Creating Excellence) is a one year commitment and can encompass a wide variety of
projects. This poster will address the structure and outcomes of an EMINENCE partnership in 2011 focusing on writing and
editing skills.
The relationship is launched at a mandatory face-to-face orientation session conducted at the Emergency Nurses Association
Annual Meeting. During this orientation, mentor and mentee expectations are clearly delineated. Monthly phone calls and
intermittent e-mails are the primary methods of interaction during the program. Early in this relationship, the mentor directed
the mentee to resources such as the Editors Handbook (Freda & Nichol, 2009) to introduce the mentee to the editing process
and shared strategies for soliciting manuscripts.
Both mentee and mentor benefited from the program. The outcomes included publications, knowledge sharing, and
collaborative projects (Harding, 2011; Haggard, 2011; Harding, 2011a). Specific mentee outcomes included:
• Publications: o Harding, A. (2011). The EMINENCE Experience. ENA Connection, 35(9), 6.
o Edited by: Haggard, A. Written by: Harding, A. (2011). Unit Inservice Classes - Are they obsolete?
Journal for Nurses in Staff Development, 27(6), 301-303.
o Harding, A. (2011a). The SQUIRE Statement, Nurse Author & Editor, 21(2).
• Exposure to and “membership” in International Academy of Nursing Editors (INANE)
• Joining a World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) list-serve
• Quarterly conference calls with the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal Editorial Board.
• New role with the Journal of Emergency Nursing as Clinical Nurses Forum editor.

Strengthening Students’ Publication Skills in a Research-Focused Doctoral Program
Joan such lockhart, PhD, RN, CORLN, AOCN, CNE, FAAN, Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs,
Duquesne University School of Nursing, Pittsburgh, PA, United States
Abstract:
PURPOSE: This poster describes the process and outcomes of an online writing course for PhD nursing students.
PROBLEM & SIGNIFICANCE: Despite the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2001, 2006) and program-specific
expectations to disseminate scholarly work through peer-reviewed publications, doctoral students often encounter challenges
in attaining this competency. While a broad range of resources is available to strengthen students’ publication skills, it is
vital to assess the effectiveness of these interventions over time. At Duquesne University School of Nursing, a redesign of
our online PhD program included a dissertation manuscript option. Previous program evaluation data regarding the
publication productivity of alumni suggested a need to implement writing supports to maximize student success. This poster
describes the design, implementation, and outcomes of an online writing for publication course in our curriculum.
INTERVENTION: A 3-credit online Writing for Healthcare Publication course was piloted as a 12-week summer cognate for
six doctoral students. The course was modeled after a successful face to face course implemented as a collaborative
academic-service initiative with master’s nursing students and nurse leaders at an affiliated health care system (Lockhart,
2000). In this online course, students developed formal publishing plans, produced publishable manuscripts, and engaged
in peer-review.
EVALUATION: At course-end, all students produced publishable papers. One year after course completion, 50% (n=3) of
students had published their manuscripts in peerreviewed journals. Student feedback from this pilot was used to design
strategies for future courses aimed to increase the number of course manuscripts submitted for publication.

Manuscript Success: A Systematic Approach to Publishing in the Professional Literature
leslie H. Nicoll, PhD, MBA, RN, Editor-in-Chief, CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing, President and Owner,
Maine Desk LLC, Portland, ME, United States
Abstract:
Through my business, I have had the opportunity to assist aspiring authors achieve their publication goals, both through
one-on-one consulting as well as in group writing retreats. The latter include three workshops sponsored by the National
League for Nursing and four sponsored by the Department of Clinical Nursing Sciences, University Hospital, Basel, Switzerland.
From this work, I have developed the “Manuscript Success” process for manuscript preparation and planning which will be
the focus of the poster presentation. It is my personal belief, based on my experience as well as comments I have heard
from other editors, that authors are often unsuccessful in their publishing attempts—not because their manuscript is poorly
written—but rather, because they do not strategically select the journal and then draft their paper with that journal in mind.
The Manuscript Success process is designed to assist authors find the right fit between their topic and a target journal and
prepare a manuscript that, as I like to say, “will catch the editor’s eye.” The process consists of five steps to help authors
systematically work through the planning process of manuscript preparation: 1) Selecting a Topic; 2) Journal Due Diligence;
3) Template Article Analysis; 4) Manuscript Math Outline; and 5) First Draft. The poster presentation will describe the overall
process with details on each of the five steps. It will also include evidence as to the usefulness of the process in the form of
citations of accepted/published articles as well as illustrative feedback quotes from individual authors.

Developing a Dynamic Publishing Model for an Online Scholarly Journal
Jacqueline k. owens, PhD, RN, Editor-in-Chief, OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, Olmsted
Township, OH, United States
Abstract:
Online publishing offers innovative models to organize content that encourage new ways to look at a topic of interest. OJIN:
The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing is a scholarly journal devoted to topics of interest to nursing and other healthcare
providers. OJIN was conceptualized as an exclusively online journal with no structural or temporal limitations to adding
timely content to any previously published topic. Using this model, the journal currently has 48 topics published since its
inception in 1996. Approximately 72% of all OJIN topics have been updated at some point with additional articles; 30% have
been updated since 2010 and 58% within the past 5 years. This model benefits readers who can seek a historical perspective
with access to all initially published content related to a given topic and also consider the evolution of information about
that topic as updates occur. In addition, articles can be linked to as many topics as are appropriate, thus encouraging readers
to explore similar content that may be relevant to their search. One challenge with dynamic models is confusion to
cataloguers and database managers who may misunderstand the structure of multiple articles in a single topic that fall under
several different tables of contents. Subsequent errors in databases resulting from this confusion can leave readers unable
to successfully find journal content in a literature search. This poster demonstrates this dynamic online publishing model
and strategies to achieve accuracy in database management and user retrieval.

Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil
Abstract:
Text & Context Nursing Journal was first published in 1992 as a joint venture of the Graduate Nursing Program of the Federal
University of Santa Catarina (PEN/UFSC) and diverse partners throughout Brazil. It started as a thematic bi-annual journal
(1992-1996) that expanded to tri-annual (1997-2002) and then quarterly publication (since 2003) in response to the large
number of submitted manuscripts, recommendations from collaborating organizations, and the need to disseminate findings
from the increasing numbers of research studies in the health sciences. In 2009, a multi-thematic format was adopted.
Through 2011, a total of 23 issues (64 regular issues and 9 special issues) have been published in 20 volumes that contain a
total of 1629 original articles, reflections, reports of experiments, literature reviews, reviews, and previews. Since 2006, an
online version at its own virtual domain (http://www.textoecontexto.ufsc.br) has provided complete article text. Over the
course of its evolution, Text & Context Nursing Journal has proved its innovative character and fulfilled responsibilities to
readers by publication of original articles with clear propositions, theoretical contributions, and effective results relevant
across Brazil and internationally.

Abstract:
The evolution of the history of nursing in Brazil has been written by scholars interested in revealing the paths in which the
profession has been developing. The purpose of this poster is to reveal the landscape of academic research into the history
of nursing as well as the evolution of the nursing history. The analysis of the scientific production of research groups in the
history of nursing in Brazil from 1999 to 2009 is a descriptive exploratory study based on document analysis. It was conducted
from the 5.0 version of the directory of research groups in Brazil from the National Council for Scientific and Technological
Development. Information on researchers and curriculum leaders was available in the Lattes Platform. We identified 34
research groups in the history of nursing with a total production of 2206 articles, 230 books and 745 book chapters and
1603 full papers and extended abstracts. Of the articles, 394 are specific to nursing history and classified as: professional
identity, nursing education, institutionalization of nursing, specialties, organizational entities and others. The analysis
demonstrates that the history of nursing is consolidated, even though the total production of articles is not directly related
to nursing history. The significant number of articles, full papers, abstracts, book chapters and books reflect positively the
participation of faculty, students and professionals in the research groups in nursing history. It is concluded that the history
of Brazilian nursing is an important part of the published literature and that it documents important aspects of development
of the profession.

A Brazilian Journal for Professional Development
Joel rolim Mancia, Editor-in-chief, Federal Council of Nursing, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil;
denise Elvira pires de pires, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil;
Vanda Elisa Andres felli, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil;
david lopes Neto, University of Amazonas, Manaus, Brazil;
Mirna forta, University of Fortaleza, Fortaleza, Brazil
Abstract:
The aim of this poster is to present the Brazilian journal Nursing in Focus (Enfermagem em Foco) and its role in the
empowerment of the nursing profession, as described by the associate editors. In Brazil, professional registration and
regulation is carried out by the Federal Council of Nursing. Enfermagem em Foco was created two years ago with the purpose
of strengthening and developing the nursing profession by disseminating nursing knowledge, especially related to the
Council’s purpose. The journal publishes articles related to ethics in nursing and health care; theory and legal fundamentals
of the nursing profession; labor processes in nursing; philosophy of nursing; professional organizations; and public policies
in health care and nursing. From the perspective of the sociology of the professions, expertise, autonomy and self-regulation
are seen as hallmarks of an autonomous profession. In this sense, nursing empowerment is required to improve professional
knowledge. Enfermagem em Foco provides access to nursing professionals and the scientific community. It is necessary to
establish the principles of ethics and assure that legal regulations are upheld by professionals and social institutions. The
journal addresses the need to disseminate this knowledge as well as to provide guidance on political and legal professional
matters which are required for nursing empowerment.

Raise Your Impact Factor by Citing More Nursing Journals
Judith s. Young, MLS, Abington Memorial Hospital, Dixon School of Nursing, Willow Grove, PA, United States
Abstract:
Last fall the INANE listserv had a discussion about how to increase the impact factors of nursing journals. This author had
been doing a study of the citing patterns of Applied Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Nursing Research, and
Research in Nursing & Health for the year 2010 to identify what sources from other disciplines a library collection should
have to support nursing research. One of the findings is that far more medical journals are cited than nursing journals. This
poster will document the statistical findings of that study. It will also provide examples of nursing journal articles that could
have been cited instead of articles from medical journals. If editors encouraged their authors to cite nursing journals as often
as possible instead of medical journals, it would help them raise their impact factors.

Deputy Editor: Succession Planning and Leadership for the Future
Maria r. shirey, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, FAAN, Deputy Editor, Nursing Forum, University of Sourthern
Indiana, Evansville, IN, United States;
patricia s. Yoder-Wise, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, Editor-in-Chief, Nursing Forum, Houston, TX, United
States
Abstract:
Background: Being an editor requires specialized knowledge; and few opportunities exist to gain that knowledge. Thus,
journals must develop approaches to facilitate learning opportunities for those with editorial aptitude and aspiration.
Purpose: Introducing the role of deputy editor, the authors discuss the adaptation of a 5- step succession planning model
(Shirey, 2008) for purposes of cultivating a future journal editor.
Methods: The 5-step model incorporates organizational factors, individual factors, developmental approaches, execution,
and evaluation and dissemination. Nursing Forum tested the model when it hired a new, seasoned editor (organizational
factor). Simultaneous availability of a known and capable individual to serve as deputy editor (individual factor) also facilitated
model implementation. Taking advantage of the deputy editor’s past experiences, the editor facilitated new growth
opportunities (developmental approaches) for involvement with the journal’s strategic direction (execution). Collaboration
resulted in positive outcomes (evaluation) for the journal and served as the foundation for knowledge sharing (dissemination).
Results: Four outcomes to date include: an individual ready to assume a future journal editor position, redesign of the
publication for enhanced branding, implementation of new author guidelines, and initiation of an interactive blog. Knowledge
dissemination opportunities are being developed now.
Conclusions: Journal editors play a major role as conduits of knowledge and innovation. Use of a 5-step model for succession
planning pairing a seasoned editor with a new deputy editor offers potential for ensuring a future leadership pipeline of
capable journal editors.
