Watch what happens in the video,
you may have seen it before on
social media…
Is it fair to judge people on their
appearance/ where they are from/
what they believe?
Stereotyping and Prejudice…
Stereotyping and
Prejudice can be
caused by any of
these…
Fear
Pride/Selfishness
Theology (Religion)
Anger/Retaliation
Past experiences
Ignorance
Upbringing
Peer Pressure

In 1533, Atahualpa, the Indian chief of the Incas of Peru, was garrotted. Why?
The Spanish were eager to conquer Peru (South America) for the land and
resources. The Incas had a lot of gold and silver.
Previous visits to Peru by Spaniards had brought new European diseases to the
Indian Incas. Because they were unused to them many of the Indians were killed
or weakened by these diseases.
A Spanish friar met with Atahualpa and told him that they had come to teach him
the truth of God’s word and they wanted to “impart to him the doctrines of the
true faith”. (Most Spaniards at the time were Christian - Roman Catholic).
The friar offered Atahualpa a Bible which he reused to accept. The Spanish army
consequently attacked, and 2000 unarmed Incas were killed.
Atahualpa was imprisoned by Francesco Pizarro, the leader of the Spanish
conquistadores. He was held for ransom and huge quantities of what would now
be priceless gold and silver ornaments were melted down by the Spanish in
return for Atahualpa’s life. Really there was never any intention to release
Atahualpa. When the supply of gold slowed down he was tried and sentenced to
death by burning. His beliefs were that if his body were destroyed he could never
re-join his army in an afterlife and destroy the Spanish. He, therefore, agreed to
be baptised, was garrotted and died a Christian!
Throughout history, nations have stolen from other nations and made the excuse that the
people they stole from were somehow less than them or had the wrong beliefs.
Last week we were reminded of how Jews and other groups were stolen from and were
killed under Hitler’s regime.
In the 18th and 19th centuries British criminals were transported to Australia. Over
subsequent years their descendants destroyed the way of life of the indigenous
Aborigines, and like the Spaniards in Peru gave fatal diseases to the indigenous people.
A similar fate lay in store for the Maori people of New Zealand.
The Red Indians of North America were run off their sacred hunting grounds in the 19th
century, by white settlers from Europe.
In South Africa, under the apartheid regime, “black” and “coloured” people were treated
as second class citizens and forced to live lives of hardship and poverty by the white
“masters”. Unbelievably, Apartheid was only finally abolished in 1991!
Over a number of recent years we have seen high profile attacks by Islamic extremists.
Those carrying out the attacks and killings have done so in the name of their God and
religion. This is not the belief of most Muslims! Unfortunately, there are ignorant and
prejudiced people in the world who want us to believe it is. The Spanish conquistadores
believed that stealing treasures from the Incas, killing the people, forcing their king,
Atahualpa, to convert to Christianity then murdering him – was done in the name of
Christ. This is not the belief of most Christians!
When reading the next few slides, don’t think in stereotypes; open your mind, use your
intelligence, abandon prejudice and see people who are “just like you”.
Is it fair to judge people on their
appearance?
Do you think this is a
fair portrayal of
Islam? Discuss.
Have you ever stopped and
thought how we are the same?
But who is responsible for
Islamophobia?
How often do
you see this on
the front page?
A final thought
before you leave…
Judge
me by
what's
in my
head,
not
what's
on my
head!
The disciple James wrote to the early Christian Church:
My brothers, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ,
you must never treat people in different ways
according to their outward appearance. Suppose a
rich man wearing a gold ring and fine clothes comes
to your meeting, and a poor man in ragged clothes
also comes. If you show more respect to the welldressed man and say to him, “Have the best seat
here,” but say to the poor man, “Stand over there or
sit here on the floor by my feet,” then you are guilty
of creating distinctions among your selves and of
making judgements based on evil motives. James 2:
v 2-4
What does the Quran state about stereotyping:
2. “O you who believe! Let not a group mock at
another group, it may be that the latter are better
than the former; Nor let (some) women mock at other
women, it may be that the latter are better than the
former, Nor defame one another, nor insult one
another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one’s
brother after having faith. And whosoever does not
repent, then such are indeed wrong-doers.“
(Chapter 49, Verse 11)
Remember this when dealing with
