Objective: Students will read and make a map Materials: • Brown paper bag • Markers and crayons • Scissors Lesson: . Have your students prepare the treasure map by cutting the paper bag. Use a sheet of loose leaf paper as a guide for cutting. “Weather” the treasure map by rubbing the paper bag together vigorously for several minutes on both sides. Have the student choose an area to map. Begin with the X where students can leave a small token to find. As they move from the X where the treasure is located, have your students look around for landmarks or well known items that they can use as a reference. Have your students use a combination of symbols and lines with directions. As an example they could write: Take 24 steps from the slide on the playground and draw a line from the slide on the playground to the X. Or begin at the water fountain and take 40 steps. Draw a green door to start at, etc. Encourage them to use symbols. Have them draw a Legend in on one side of the map explaining the symbols they used. Encourage them to use both standard symbols and created ones. Have your students exchange maps and look for treasure! When the activity is over, discuss how the maps were helpful, and why symbols are important. © 2010 Mazz.com Teaching Guide/Lesson Plan Reading a Map 1.
