Summer 1 Newsletter 2017 - Crowcroft Park Primary School

April 2017
English
We will be covering many genres this term such as
persuasive texts, instructional texts, recounts and nonchronological reports – all linked to our Norway topic,
especially focusing on trolls! We will still focus on
grammar and punctuation such as using apostrophes
accurately, using comparative and superlative language,
successfully using a range of logical connectives and
continue using relative clauses to add detail and
description. Another focus will be to use a wider range
of punctuation such as colons and semi-colons, brackets
and dashes. Spelling will also be continued to be taught
and practised regularly.
Geography
Our topic is ‘Europe’ with a specific focus on the country of
Norway. We will learn about the different countries and
cultures that make up Europe and our part within it.
Knowledge such as capital cities, main rivers, mountain
ranges, languages, flags and currency will be learnt. Our
particular focus will be on Norway where we will look in
more depth at the culture and traditions as well as the
main landscape features and towns & cities.
Other subjects:
We will also be learning some more French and finding
out about the French culture; finding out about how the
internet works in Computing lessons; and will focus on
Islam in R.E later in the term.

How you can help your child:
Reading: Please listen to your child read regularly
and discuss with them what has been read.
Ensure your child is in for 8:50am on their reading
day. Please also sign reading logs.
Spelling: Please support your child in learning
their weekly spellings as well as the Y5/6
expected words. Spelling words will be listed on
Spelling City where they can be learnt through
games. Please encourage your child to use it! The
year 5 spelling rules can also be practised through
reading eggs. Spellings must be practiced at
home every week as the children will be tested on
them weekly.
Homework will be related to our European topic,
as well as Maths games/challenges.
Science
Our focus in science this term is forces and
mechanical devises. We will be looking at: how
gravity is a force; unbalanced and balanced forces;
friction; air resistance and water resistance. There
will be many practical opportunities for investigation
and measuring forces including the use of Newton
meters.
In PSHE, we will look at how to keep ourselves
healthy. This will include looking at the food we eat
and especially the amount of sugar contained in
food and drink, as well as focusing on the
importance of exercise and personal hygiene. We
will also look at how we rest and relax and keep our
minds healthy and try to avoid stress.
Maths
This term we will be working on: recognising,
estimating and measuring angles as well as calculating
missing angles; converting between different types of
measures including imperial units; and calculating and
area & perimeter. We will also continue to recognise
multiples and factors of numbers, prime numbers,
square numbers and cube numbers.
We will continue to look at problem solving and
applying knowledge already gained, as well as increasing
number fluency through games and regular practise and
understanding of number facts.
To help support your child best at home: look through
their latest assessment paper and encourage them to
work on any areas needed by using Numeracy workout.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back after the break, I can’t believe we are
already in our final term! The children have been
working really hard over the past two terms and
produced some excellent work. I am very positive that
they will continue this during their final term in Year 5. I
was especially proud of the way they all conducted
themselves during the bikeability training and was
impressed at how well they all did! The trainers said
they all listened well and tried hard at working on their
skills. They really were a credit to yourselves and the
school!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to come and see me at the end of the day to
arrange an appointment. Alternatively you can contact
