Koinonia Farm
Gift Catalog
2015 –2016
www.koinoniafarm.org
Dear Friends,
This year you can feel even
better about purchasing our
specialty products knowing
that you are supporting
local, organic, and fair trade
farmers and organizations.
Our delicious treats are
not only socially just, but
healthy as well. When you
take a bite of our Pecan Pie,
you’ll experience all the
traditional southern flavor,
but none of the corn syrup!
You’ll also notice several
improvements in our choices
of ingredients, like organic
sugar and non-GMO expeller
pressed canola oil. We know
you and your loved ones will
taste the care and concern
we put into our products.
Thank you for ordering from Koinonia
Farm. Whether you select from our
tasty selection of food items, from the
wide variety of craft items or from our stimulating list of DVDs
and books, know that your purchase helps to fund the work that
we do in the service of others.
I especially want to call your attention to two new books.
A must read is “The Class of 1965” by Jim Auchmutey,
that tells the story of Greg Wittkamper’s experience during
the integration of Americus High School. And know that Ann
Truesdale’s “Cotton Patch Rebel,” beautifully illustrated by
Tracy Newton, is a perfect choice for the adolescents in your life.
See page 12 for both publications.
We have begun a new partnership with Wow! Hand Soaps.
See page 9 to learn more about their line of hand-crafted soaps
and their ministry with youth in Nashville, Tn.
We are confident that any selection you make from our
catalog will be an excellent one. Please don’t forget to add a
monetary gift to your order. All such gifts are tax-deductible.
And they, too, help fund Koinonia’s service to others.
Peace and Mercy,
Bren Dubay
Steward & Director
An update on Bren’s health — As you may know, Bren was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and underwent surgery and
radiation treatments. She is doing very well and the prognosis continues to be extremely positive. We all appreciate the
outpouring of your prayers and good wishes for her.

Factoid:
According to the USDA, pecans
possess more antioxidant activity
than any other tree nut. Antioxidants
are naturally occurring substances,
such as the polyphenolics found
in pecans. They keep in check the
potentially harmful effects of free
radicals, reactive oxygen species
which the body produces from
normal metabolism and that are also
encountered in the environment.
To get a daily dose of these natural
antioxidants, try 10 raw pecan
halves (a handful) as a snack.
1.
2.
Did you know?
One ounce of Georgia pecans (about
19 halves) has the same amount of
protein as 2 oz of lean meat. Dietary
guidelines suggest 2–2.5 oz of nuts,
seeds, and soy products per week.
For vegans, that recommendation is
7.5 oz per week. Know your protein!

Wow! Hand Soaps
Palestinian Goods
We’re excited to add
another partnership this year. We
met Wow! Hand
Soaps at Christian
Community Development Association
(CCDA) in 2014
and knew it was
a match made in Heaven. WOW! Soap
is a handmade soap company and social
enterprise of Harvest Hands Community
Development Corporation in Nashville, TN,
crafting soaps out of the finest oils and plant
materials while providing jobs and mentoring for youth in South Nashville. They
empower youth to develop job skills, learn
the value of service, and earn money in their
own neighborhood.
This is the third year we’ve worked with Canaan
Fair Trade, a certified organic organization that
uses Fair Trade practices to empower small
and marginalized Palestinian producers who
are caught in the midst of conflict. The 1,700
farmers, organized in small village cooperatives,
continue to produce their goods using ancient
sustainable farming practices, in spite of the
political and social barriers that sometimes
separate them from their land.
Ingredients: WOW! Soap is cold process soap made with olive
oil, coconut oil, palm oil, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, and
essential or fragrance oil.

a Divided Town, and the
Long Road to Forgiveness
Greg Wittkamper was a Koinonia kid who

story of Greg’s mistreatment at the hands of
his classmates, and about the remarkable reconciliation that
took place 41 years later. It also follows the story of 4 of Greg’s
classmates who came to reconsider the attitudes they grew up
with. 206 pages. Hardcover.

Extending Fellowship
You become much more than a Koinonia
Farm supporter when you purchase products
from this catalog. You become a player in a much
greater story than simple market exchanges. With
your purchase, you help make another world
possible for the thousands of cocoa farmers, coffee
farmers, and Palestinian farmers and women.
You provide another way of life for youth in
Nashville, and San Francisco. You also provide a
living for those we hire, and those we partner with
throughout the year. You show the world that we
don’t have to sterilize and pillage the soil in order
to grow and harvest a crop. You show that another
world is coming into existence here and now.
You also make a difference in the lives of
thousands upon thousands of people touched
by the Koinonia community today. You become
a source of enrichment and provision for the
spiritual and cultural pilgrims who become
Koinonia guests or interns each year! Since
1942, hospitality has remained central to our
community life.

Guests come for so many reasons. Some
come to get away from the hustle and bustle
of daily life, to learn about the birthplace of
Habitat for Humanity and other wonderful
ministries, or to get their hands dirty in the
soil. Others come to find a place of solace and
retreat, to learn from Koinonia’s example of
peacemaking, radical sharing, and equality, or
to learn about our farming practices. There are
many reasons to visit Koinonia. And we hope
you find one that fits you!
Each year, we host interns for a year-long
experience at Koinonia. We also host various
classes and retreats throughout the year. We
offer work projects for those who want to help
out—college groups, church groups, club
groups, etc. We have space to host groups for
private workshops or conferences.
Whatever the reason, we’d love to sit at
table with you this year as we work together to
build a new world, full of freedom, justice, and
opportunities for those coming after us.

Koinonia (Greek for loving community)
was founded in 1942 to be a “demonstration
plot for the Kingdom of God,” sharing
resources, work, and prayer much like the
example of early Christians in the Book of Acts.
Our most deeply held belief are drawn
from Jesus’ teachings — peacemaking, radical
sharing, and brotherhood/sisterhood among
people regardless of race. In the 1950’s and
60’s, Koinonia was fiercely reviled for these
beliefs. Our mail-order pecan business brought
us through years of local boycott, and remains
our main source of earned income.
Koinonia is also a haven of down-to-earth
theology. Founding member Clarence Jordan
was a farmer and a Greek scholar. He penned
the Cotton Patch Version into South Georgia
vernacular, seeking to place scripture in the
‘here and now’ of his day. His books and lively
sermons are still beloved and well-known today.
Our life of service has taken various forms
through the years. In the early days, we
extended friendship to our neighbors, mostly
Black sharecroppers and tenant farmers.
Koinonia gave birth to the partnership housing
movement in 1968 that later grew into Habitat
for Humanity. Our current focus is on “feeding
the hungry”not only physically, but spiritually
as well. We grow healthy food, offer internships
and workshops, and, as always, welcome people
to walk this journey with us. Below is a list of
ways you can become part of the story!
