2014-2015 Arts General Education Assessment Results and
Closing the Loop Actions
Department: ART
Directions: For each department/program student learning outcome, the department will provide the following information on the results of
assessment completed during this current academic year. What has been learned about curriculum, pedagogy, student learning? What percent of
students – exceeded, met, approached, did not meet – the criteria of success? What specific actions will the department initiate for improvement
(“Closing the Loop”), including budget requests? Enter this information in the table below. Submit this form at the end of each academic year
during the three-year assessment cycle. This table has space for reports on only one outcome; copy it for additional outcomes in this report.

Actions to be taken as a direct result of assessment results (“Closing the Loop”):
ART 221.0 is a Gen Ed class and foundations offering for the Brockport students. Most of the class is comprised of non-art majors. Some
students take this class because they “have to”, some because they have “always loved to draw” and others who have a curiosity. Therefore, most
are not acutely familiar with the critique process, as evidenced in the overall scores of 3.08 in dimensions 2 and 3. A more descriptive explanation
of the purpose of critique processes early in the semester may help in clarifying.
For the most part, students try their hardest to follow guidelines and meet the desired requirements for the project. For the most part, there is a
very high level of success as evidenced in the score of 3.5 in dimension 1. However, across the board students tend to be sloppy. There is litte
desire or understanding of the concept of craftsmanship. This assessment project included craftsmanship, of which most, if not all of the students
needed improvement. A more specific instruction on craftsmanship will be addressed at the beginning of semester and continued until completed.
Additional Physical Demonstrations, YouTube presentations of artists working or articles regarding craftsmanship would be helpful all taking place
more intensely earlier in the semester.
