TD2 is unique in its comprehensive understanding of oncology clinical development. TD2’s world renowned experts in science and medicine have time and again demonstrated their deep commitment to scientific discovery and innovation.” q • New drug treatments, some now approved, were managed by TD2 — Abraxane in combination with gemcitabine for pancreatic cancer; and Erivedge for basal cell carcinoma that has spread to other parts of the body. All were tested first in Scottsdale at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials, a partnership of HonorHealth and TGen. TD2 managed a cutting-edge clinical trial conducted by the SideOut Foundation. This exciting trial involved deep molecular profiling and proteomic mapping of breast tumors to prospectively select the best treatment for that patient. The results from the first study demonstrated that 52 percent of patients with advanced breast cancer received clinical benefit by addressing the abnormal proteins in their tumor. • An example of the high-caliber business affiliations involving TD2 was the recent $200 million deal announced between Celgene and Forma Therapeutics to develop a new line of anti-cancer drugs. The collaboration will discover new medicines and use TD2 to execute on development from the earliest preclinical studies to initial Phase I – first in human – clinical trials. q Our approach ensures a win-win for patients and companies alike . . . HonorHealth’s experts help each patient create a plan that works for his or her unique needs. At the HonorHealth Virginia G. At HonorHealth, experts are redefining how the world treats cancer. “Patients can find innovative care and treatments close to home,” said Mark Slater, PhD, HonorHealth vice president of research and chief executive of HonorHealth Research Institute. “We also offer help and hope today and advancements for tomorrow. “ Immunotherapy: Harnessing the power of the immune system One of the most promising treatment options for cancer is immunotherapy. It stimulates the immune system to recognize and eliminate cancer cells from the body. Immunotherapy has much promise because of its effectiveness and lack of side effects. The immune system has the capability to fight off cancer, but it needs to see the cancer cells first. Immunotherapy treatment flips the switch on cancer cells so they can no longer hide, and the immune system can do its job — attacking and killing cancer cells. The ground breaking treatment has demonstrated remarkable results in treating cancers that have evaded the immune system and spread out of control. Hope for Today, Innovation for Tomorrow A clinical trial is an option for cancer patients at any stage of their cancer journey. In fact, it is recommended that a patient seek out a clinical trial as soon as they are diagnosed. Patients don’t have to wait until other treatments have failed to enroll in a trial. Each clinical trial has specific eligibility criteria — requirements that patients must meet before they can participate. The clinical trials nurse navigator will help the patient make a decision. “The research done at our clinical trials is remarkable, and it benefits our community— and beyond,” said Dr. Slater, noting that Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials has seen patients from 48 states and two dozen countries. “Some of the patients seen in the clinical trials program have not responded to standard care and have been told they only have 12 weeks to live. Despite this, each week, I hear about patients who are celebrating their one, two and three-year anniversaries. They’re attending weddings and having birthdays. We’re able to extend their quantity and quality of life,” Dr. Slater said. Genes and Cancer Genetic counseling can empower patients with information about their cancer risks, Mayo Medical School receives state licensure for Arizona branch campus Mayo Medical School announced in May 2015 that its planned expansion in Scottsdale, has received licensure by the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education, the group responsible for regulating private postsecondary degree-granting institutions within the state of Arizona. “This is a major milestone in our journey to open a full four-year branch campus of Mayo Medical School in Scottsdale,” says Wyatt Decker, M.D., CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Earlier this month, Mayo Medical School leaders announced they had also received endorsement for the expansion from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting body for medical education. While many experts wonder if medical schools across the country are doing enough to prepare graduates for the challenges of an evolving health care system, Dr. Decker notes that the medical school — planned to open in 2017 — won’t rest on conventional physician training. “The reality is that most medical schools are teaching the same way they did 100 years ago,” Dr. Decker said in a recent Wall Street Journal article. “It’s time to blow up that model and ask, ‘What must we do to train tomorrow’s doctors?’” One tool that will be woven into the school’s transformative education is a four-year Science of Health Care Delivery curriculum jointly developed with Arizona State University (ASU), along with innovative online learning modules. As Mayo medical students master subjects such as systems engineering, health care policy and biomedical informatics, they will become the first in the nation to receive a certificate in the Science of Health Care Delivery, jointly conferred by Mayo Medical School and ASU, along with their medical degree. Students will also have the personal option of completing a master’s degree in the Science of Health Care Delivery through ASU. q the likelihood that their family’s history of cancer is hereditary, and options for genetic testing. The ability to use a patient’s genetic makeup for a more targeted treatment plan is a strength of the HonorHealth Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. The goal of our genetic program is to prevent cancer, or to detect it as early as possible by identifying individuals at increased risk. We also have emerging opportunities to connect treatment the patient’s genetic makeup. Cancer Transplant Institute The HonorHealth Cancer Transplant Institute, located at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center, cares for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. The patient’s stem cell transplant will meet the high standards mandated by FACT, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy. The Cancer Transplant Institute is accredited by FACT for adult transplants. The institute is also an accredited member of the National Marrow Transplant Program, a prestigious program that boasts a registry of 11 million donors and organizations from around the world. This means the patient has access to the most comprehensive list of donors, if one is needed for a stem cell transplant. Clinical research recognition • In October 2015, the FDA fast-tracked approval of a new pancreatic cancer drug treatment, Onivyde, to treat advanced pancreatic cancer. • In September 2013, the FDA approved the combination of Abraxane and Gemcitibine to treat advanced pancreatic cancer. This is now the standard of care. • Erivedge, the first drug to receive expedited FDA approval for treating inoperable basal cell carcinoma, went from Phase I clinical trials at our cancer center to FDA approval in five years, half the time it typically takes for a drug to be approved. • RADAR (Rapid Detection and Assessment of Response) is a one-of a-kind rapid cancer detection program developed through collaboration between local physicians, HonorHealth’s Research Institute and the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. • In November 2015, TGen received a $12 million grant from Stand Up to Cancer. The goal: To double the survival of patients with pancreatic cancer. HonorHealth is part of this dream team — we’re the only clinical trial site in Arizona for this effort. • We are one of the original Dream Team sites for cancer research by Stand Up to Cancer, making our center the only one in the Southwest participating as a collaborator in the $18 million SU2C pancreatic cancer Dream Team grant. • Our researchers identified a way to predict which patients with small-cell lung cancer may be resistant to first-line chemotherapy. The discovery is critical because patients with small-cell lung cancer often do not get a second chance at therapies to combat the aggressive form of cancer. • We were the first site in the world for clinical trials of a drug called OSI-906 to combat adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare but deadly cancer that attacks the adrenal glands. • We were the world’s first clinical trials site f or NMS-1286937, a new drug designed to stop cancer from spreading by preventing the process of cell division. • We’re accelerating promising new cancer treatments through the study of cancer genetics thanks to partnerships with the Translational Genomics Research Institute, a leader in developing treatments for complex diseases and genetic studies, as well as leading pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms and academic universities. The company is also leading transparency in lab testing by committing to FDA review all of its laboratory developed tests and publishing its prices, lab proficiency testing scores, customer satisfaction scores, guest visit times, and more. “When one of our Arizona bioscience companies achieves great success, it is cause for celebration across the entire life sciences community,” said AZBio President and CEO Joan Koerber-Walker. “The Arizona Bioscience Company of the Year award recognizes the bioscience company whose Arizona-based operations did the most to transform the world during the last 12 months.” q PEOPLE MAKING THE DIFFERENCE Dr. Michael Gordon Virginia G.
