Spring 2013-M
Hello! We are your Edmonds School District Alumni Association. We exist
for two important purposes: (1) to raise money for student scholarships and (2) to
serve as a connection to the thousands of Edmonds graduates. We are extending
our mailing list one time to try and reach thousands of alumni who have not been
contacted before. Our association has become the principle fund raiser for District
15 students. Last year 39 scholarships were awarded totaling $69,000.
Richard Harper (EHS’65) started a small volunteer organization that has
grown into a major scholarship effort. The board is still all volunteers, and with
District #15 helping by lending solid support, the association has taken off. This
past year the Hazel Miller Foundation has given major support in terms of
$30,000. Individuals have stepped forward to fund personal scholarships. The Caldarts fund a vocal music scholarship. The Donadels fund a music scholarship for
LHS. There are scholarships in memory of Don Fitzgerald (counselor) and Ron
Fraser (principal). The Barbara Escandon family supports a future teacher scholarship. The Gromko family funds a scholarship for EWHS, and LHS sponsors a
Ron Lee memorial scholarship.
The Eda I. Harless family supports a memorial scholarship for EWHS and
MTHS. LHS retirees fund a scholarship for LHS. We fund scholarships for those
students entering the vocational and trades careers. Four families fund these areas:
the Michelson, Manchester, Boseck and McIntosh families. . The McIntosh
family and the Lowell family fund a scholarship. The Zimmerman family has
funded a MTHS scholarship for many years
Money that is not specified goes into the alumni general scholarship fund.
Last year 9 students received $1500 each.
We need you to join us and spread the word. We want all our students to
have opportunities to further their goals and aspirations. Costs for technical and
college training continue to rise. Too many students are leaving school with thousands of dollars in debt. Please consider joining us as a member or deciding to fund
a scholarship to your school or for a specific purpose. Our board makes the final
decision, but we try and accommodate your wishes to the best possible extent.
Notice to all ESDAA members, donors and non-members
Starting the fall of 2013 our newsletters will no longer be mailed via hard copy. The costs of mailing these newsletters has more than doubled the last few years. The ESDAA board has decided to
discontinue the U.S. mailings, with a few exceptions, and divert more money to student scholarships.
Our e-mailed version of the newsletter has several more pages and we can send out thousands at a
very low cost. If you still want a hard copy mailed, you need to be either a member or a donor to the
ESDAA without an e-mail address. Memberships are $15 single or $25 couple per year. Donors are
people who give $100 to $1000 or more yearly to the ESDAA scholarship fund. We are a 501C(3)
non profit organization. We also facilitate several endowments that have been named for people in
the Edmonds School District community.
Please send your e-mail address to Linda Fitzgerald at [email protected] or contact us at
either ESDAA P.O. Box 1334 Lynnwood, WA 98046 or phone at 425-431-7084.

ROBERT ANDERSON TRIBUTE CONCERT
The Edmonds School District and South Snohomish County lost an important member of our community last
year with the passing of Robert B. Anderson. Bob began his career in Edmonds in 1946 as
a teacher at Edmonds High School where he is remembered fondly by many former students and staff. In his free time Bob played in a string quartet and was the conductor of
the Bremerton Symphony for nine years. In 1962 he founded and became conductor of the
Cascade Symphony, where he conducted his final concert in 1992, 30 years later. Bob set
up a foundation to financially support many of the charities and non profits that he loved
and the ESDAA is fortunate to receive funds from this foundation. We use these funds for
scholarships for graduating seniors, especially those with high school music participation
and future music plans. A free Tribute Concert being organized by Frank DeMiero will be held on April 13,
2013 at 3:30 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood.
Donna Rice (EHS ‘55) volunteers in Sultan
“Donna Rice, 75, of Startup, is a midwife, masseuse, seamstress and caregiver. She is a house cleaner,
foster parent, life saver, food bank volunteer and just simply a good Samaritan. She started the free dinners in
Sultan several years ago after the Skykomish River flooded and swept away the belongings of a group of men
living under the bridges at the edge of downtown. In the beginning, she bought them sleeping bags and offered them food our of the back of her car. ‘As I grew up, I found myself just giving, almost automatically. I
never looked for a reward. When you have it in your heart, you just do it—try to help people in need or those
who just need a friend.’ Rice’s husband, Jerry, died three months ago. They’d been married 55 years, and
had made a life of caring for other people, whether it was sharing the fruits of their garden labors or milk from
their cows.”
(story written by Dan Bates in the Everett Herald April 24, 2012. See story for more details.)
