Marcus and I leave the cafe under the disguise of father and daughter. We walk for several blocks before I feel it,
the sensation of being watched. Casually, I turn and look up at Marcus, pretending to beg daddy to go the sweets shop,
and look back. Down the street, about half a block away, is the man from the cafe. I tighten my grip on Marcus' hand and

Pompeii
Pompeii is a 2014 disasteradventure film that is set in 79 A.D., in the
Roman metropolis that sits under Mount
Versvius. This film is produced and directed
by Paul W.S. Anderson who was involved in
creating Resident Evil franchise, Alien vs.
Predator, Death Race 1 and 2, and The Three
Musketeers. Anderson calls Pompeii
“probably the most spectacular disaster of
the ancient world.”
With this film I wanted to be sure that everything was scientifically and historically
accurate so I looked online and I found an
interview with the director Anderson. The
question that was given to Anderson was
that, ‘Many people are familiar with what
happened in Pompeii, but do you think audiences will walk away from your move having learned something new?’ Anderson
answers, “In terms of the science, we tried to
be as accurate as possible. Again, it is not a

is a bit of a horse whisperer, which helps
him get closer to Cassia. His immediate
problem is that there is an upcoming battle

who has been promised to be freed if he

make Cassia his wife. Surprisingly, Corvus
was also in charge of the Roman battalion
that slaughtered Milos’s family 17 years ago.
During the battle Mount Vesuvius begins to

Given that this film wis not just good on its

it even better if you're a fan of Roman history. If you're an average film-goer, then,
frankly, you can do better. I rate this film 7

“He knows,” I whisper.
“It's okay, this isn't the first time,” Marcus reassures me, and he's right. A few years after I left home, people started coming after me. There are many people in this world who would like to use my talent of creating beasts for their own
gain, to make armies for themselves. But they shouldn't know I can change my own age, even I only found out I could do
that last year.
“Relax,” Marcus says. I nod and we keep walking, though I can't help but keep glancing back, and every time I do
the man is closer. Suddenly, Marcus pulls me into an old bookstore. As he leads me to the back I see the man from the
cafe walk past. He doesn't even look inside. I sigh in relief and start heading back to the front door, when Marcus yanks
me back.
“Hey! He's gone, we can go home now,” I say. I try pulling him forwards but he won't budge. He opens the back
door into an alley and pulls me around in front of him.
“What are you doing?” I yell, struggling to escape his grasp. His hand tightens around my arm and I cry out.
“Sorry,” he says, then throws me into the alley. I shield my head with my arms and smack into the pavement. Hissing in pain, I roll onto my back and look up. The man from the cafe is standing above me. He grins.
“Here she is, just like I said, Terry,” Marcus says. He takes a step into the alley and closes the door behind him.
“Here she is indeed. So she's really seventeen? Amazing. I would kill to be able to make myself younger,” Terry
sneers. Something about his tone tells me he isn't lying. I turn onto my stomach and start to shuffle away when he places
a heavy boot on my back.
“Yeah, so where's my money?” Marcus asks. Terry pauses, pats the pockets on his jeans and leather jacket, and
shrugs.
“You know what? I seem to have left it in the car, how's about I take the girl there quick, grab your cash, and come
right back. Okay?” Terry smiles and the weight of his boot eases just a bit.
“Not funny. Just give me the money,” Marcus puts out a hand and takes a step forwards and keeps his gaze locked
on Terry. I turn my face away and close my eyes. Please let them keep arguing.
“Whoa, man, calm down, I have it right here,” Terry says. I hear him unzip his jacket and the sound of rubbing
leather as he reaches into the inside pocket. “Ah, here it is!”
There's a click, then the distinctive sound of a bullet being fired, then a thud. Forgetting my task, I open my eyes
and shriek when I see Marcus' face in front of mine, eyes wide and dead, a fresh hole in his forehead seeping blood.
To be continued…

many answers, and this could be a very
imprecise answer but it needs to be dealt
with. Stress can get to be a very serious
problem at times, seeing as it can give us
major anxiety. So to get through it all, what
can we do?
The answer is simple. Take a break.
Just do something that you want to do, or
feel you need to do. Whether it's school (we
all know it's a major contributing factor),
home or work- after a long day of one or all
of these, just sit down and watch a show and
ourselves can affect our self esteem. We tend
to think that our unique differences are terrible flaws. One of the most difficult things to
do is to admit and believe that we are beautiful human beings. The most important ways
to feel satisfied with who you are, is to look
yourself in the mirror and to say three things
that you love about yourself. You may feel
like you sound conceited, but in all reality
you are making yourself feel better about
your self image. The best way to develop a
healthy body type is to stay active and eat
healthy. Staying active does not mean overexercising. Try and do one active thing a day
like going to a hockey practice or doing
some sit ups at home. Eating healthy does
not mean dieting. The best way to eat
healthy is to make sure you get a full serving
from each food group. Follow the Canada
Food Group guide for the correct amount of
portions. The last way to feel happy with
your body image is to not care about what

The Kinks Low Budget
“I just want to get good grades,

the goals of the grade nines. In elementary,

it went really well. “The staff were great and
my classmates are nice.” said one grade 9

This semester, lots of the grade 9s
just want to pass one specific class, such as
Social Studies and Science. Others just want
to get involved in the school, such as making
the Sabre softball team. No matter what your
dream is, the grass isn’t always greener on

It’s a big step from grade 8 to grade

Weather Woes
Turn on the news lately and there
will be something about frozen water pipes,
water main breaks, potholes or rail car shortages. For all of the aforementioned inconveniences, we can thank Old Man Winter
(maybe he’ll leave if we do). Let’s start with
our frozen pipes. I understand that we have
had a very cold season, but shouldn’t a notoriously cold city be prepared for such things?
We have not earned the nickname
“Winterpeg” for nothing! Water is one of
the necessities of life, something we humans
cannot live without. The city should have
immediately reached out to those affected
and supplied them with bottled water and
reimburse those who are continuously running their taps to prevent their pipes from
freezing.
On the topic of frozen pipes, I don’t
think you can listen to a traffic report without
hearing about yet another water main break.
So many people have been unable to drive all
the way to their homes because their road

water enters, and then freezes, and expands
the hole. And melts, freezes, and expands
the hole. Eventually we are left with the
potholes, AKA giant tire eaters, Winnipeggers are all too familiar with. In some cases,
they are so deep that rebar in the roads is
being exposed, and street car rails are seeing
daylight for the first time in over 50 years.
They may appreciate being uncovered, but
the feeling isn’t mutual.
In case those who don’t live or work
in the city are feeling left out of all this fun,
there is a problem specifically for those who
farm or work for an elevator. There is a
shortage of rail cars, resulting in grain not
being removed from the elevators, so they
aren’t allowing farmers to haul in more grain
for profit. This means farmers aren’t getting
paid, so they can’t buy seed for the supposedly coming spring. If there is a shortage of
canola, wheat, barley, flax, corn, sunflower,
pea or bean products come next winter, we
will know why. Talk about a domino effect!
Sabre Scoop
Despite all this trouble, people have
still found it in themselves to reach out and
help others.
Friendly neighbours have
stepped up to the plate and allowed their
neighbours with frozen water pipes to run
hoses from their taps through windows for
water. Let’s hope the city is just as kind and
reimburses these good neighbours’ water
bills.

Through the month of April the student council is putting on an “Awareness Month”. The purpose of Awareness Month is to bring to attention topics that aren’t really talked about. Topics include Culture Day, where the student council will showcase the Irish Culture. Special
guest McConnel School of Irish Dance will be putting on a performance of traditional Irish dancing. Blue Day is a day to raise awareness
about moods and mood disorders. Healthy Relationships Day is a day focused on healthy relationships between peers and significant others.
Environment day is a day to make a push for a better earth! Plastic shopping bags will be collected in front of the office and the student
council will be selling metal reusable water bottles to promote a better environment without extra waste. The plastic water bottles will be
removed from the drink machines to promote even further a world with less waste.
The dates for each day of Awareness month are:
Culture Day- April 10th
Blue Day April 15th
Healthy Relationship Day- April 23rd
Environment Day- April 30th

Sanford’s Curling Triumph
Our four years of curling as a Sanford Sabre are over. It was an extremely fun
and tough ride. It came with many wins,
losses, heartbreak, celebration, and many
memories. Curling at Sanford were some of
the best curling years of our lives and we
wouldn’t change them for anything. We got
to play with a lot of different people and
made lots of new friends along the way.
In grade 9 our zone team won two
games all year and didn’t even make it to the
second bonspiel. When we were going into
grade ten all we were hoping for was to make
it to the second bonspiel, and we did. Even
though we didn’t get to the final zone spiel in
grade ten we knew that we could one day win
a zone banner for Sanford. Going into grade
eleven the only thing on our minds was that
if we can’t win the banner this year it was the
end for us. That year we went on to a 9-0
record and won the zone four banner. We
were off to provincials! At provincials our
record was 3-2 and we finish fourth overall.

Basketball Life Lessons
Four years of high-school basketball
came to a surprising end for our varsity girls’
basketball team earlier this month. In the
Zone IV final, we lost a heart wrenching 5349 to our rivals Altona. This was our second
loss to this team in our four years of basketball at Sanford Collegiate. Having won this
game, our team would have advanced to an
inter-zone against St. James, giving us a
chance at representing our school at provincials, which are being held in Swan River
this year. Although we didn’t accomplish the
outcome we hoped for, we played our hearts
out that game and gave it all we had. It was a
well fought, fair game. As Coach Sinnock
always said, “It doesn’t matter if you lose, it
matters how you lose.”
road trips, stopping at McDonalds after an
away game and playing in tournaments every
weekend. But most importantly, we will miss
our coach, Ms. Sinnock, and the rest of the
team who will not be graduating with us this
year.
Lastly, we would like to thank Sinnock for not only being an amazing coach,
but for being an amazing friend. Over our
four years at Sanford Collegiate, she has
taught us several life lessons. She’s taught us
about attitude, positivity, and commitment.
She’s always been there for us, on and off
the court, as well as inside and outside of
school. As a coach, teacher and friend, we
can truly say she is someone we look up to.
Throughout our four years of
high school basketball, there have been
countless lessons learned. Out of all of
Sinnock’s post game life lessons, the one
that has stuck with us the most is the
lesson on attitude. In tough games, Sinnock would always tell us to play with
character and a positive attitude. As an
athlete, remaining self-composed is a
very difficult task during the heat of the
game. Sinnock made it her number one
priority to make sure our team was calm
and sportsmanlike. She would constantly
remind us that it doesn’t matter what the
parents, refs, or opposing team members
were saying. The only part of the game
we could control was ourselves.
Best wishes to our fellow graduating
players; Cailin Becker, Maizy North and
Sam Payette and best of luck to the returning
players next year. We will miss you!
