1. Why were the Seminoles angry with Americans? The Seminoles were angry because the US attacked the fort and returned the African Americans to slavery. 2. How and when did the 1st Seminole War begin? The first Seminole war began in 1817. The war began because Seminole Chief Neamathla and the commander at Fort Scott had an argument, which led to US troops attacking the Seminole village (Fowltown). This caused the Seminoles to attack soldiers traveling to the fort. 3. When did the 1st Seminole War end? The first war ended in 1818. 4. Describe the Treaty of Moultrie Creek. Leaders from the Seminoles and US met at Moultrie Creek in 1823 to make a compromise (come to an agreement). The treaty let Seminoles stay in Florida, however they had to move to central Florida. Many Seminole chiefs did not sign it. 5. Who became the president of the US in 1829? What was his goal? Andrew Jackson became president. His goal was to make all southeastern Native Americans move to an Indian Territory he created. 6. What conflict arose between the Seminoles and Americans in 1832? Some Seminole leaders signed a treaty which they thought meant they would only look at a territory. The US thought when they signed it they were going to move to that territory in three years. 7. Describe the battle that started the 2nd Seminole War. Soldiers were sent to force Seminoles to move to the Indian Territory. Dade took soldiers near the Seminole area. However, the Seminoles attacked and killed Dade and most of his men. 8. List advantages and disadvantages the Seminoles had. Disadvantage- Seminoles had no more than 3,000 warriors Advantage- Seminoles wanted to keep the land more than Americans wanted to fight them. This allowed them to go to dangerous places to surprise the US. 9. What caused many Seminoles to grow weak in the 1800s? Malaria caused Seminoles to grow weak. 10. Who was Osceola? Osceola was a Seminole warrior who wanted the fighting to stop, so he decided to talk to the US for a truce. 11. What happened when Osceola tried to have a truce? Osceola brought a white flag as a sign of peace, however the US ignored it and captured him. He died of malaria in prison. 12. Describe the 3rd Seminole War. US government destroyed Bowlegs banana fields even though they were just supposed to inspect his land. This caused the 3rd Seminole War. Bowlegs and his fighters eventually surrendered. However, no one completely won the war. 13. How did the wars effect Seminoles? It changed the Seminole culture because after each war they had to move to new lands. The moves made them change their homes and food based on where they lived. It also caused many to leave Florida
