If, however, you plan on extending your vacation, or taking a vacation at another time during the year, please notify your child’s teacher, as well as the office, as appropriate paperwork needs to be completed for an extended absence over and above regular school holiday time. Lost and Found Articles We would ask that you encourage your child to check the lost and found articles at school if they are missing articles of clothing. The pile of lost clothing in the lost and found has been increasing. If these articles are not claimed by March 11th, they will be donated to charity. You may also call the school and make an appointment to come and check the lost and found articles. Let’s make this a priority! All Saints School, through the generous support of its C.S.P.C., is once again participating in the Ontario Library Association Forest of Reading Program. Junior and Intermediate students are able to join our Blue Spruce reading club. Members set personal reading goals and read independently during book club and personal time. Students share their opinions and feelings about nominated literature during weekly “book talk” morning meetings with their peers. The Book Club runs from February to mid-April, once a week during AM recess. Further information about the book club will follow – so listen to morning announcements for details! Primary students will be part of the O.L.A. Blue Spruce program within their individual classrooms. All clubs aim to promote increased interest in reading and responding to books. Congratulations to the All Saints community for their enthusiasm and commitment toward fostering literacy! Our assembly will recognize students who have demonstrated the Virtues of the Month (December – Charity, January– Courage and February - Love) and students who display an active living and learning lifestyle by participating to the best of their ability in Daily Physical Activity. It will take place on Friday February 24th with the Grade 4-8 assembly beginning at 9:15 and including the Honour Roll and Grades 1-3 at 12:45 pm. We will also continue to recognize one student per grade for the Virtue of the Month and the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. Safe & Caring Schools Visitors to the School Toronto Catholic District School Board policy states that all visitors to the school MUST report to the office. This is foremost to ensure the safety of all students. In an effort to promote the independence of the students and to ensure the integrity of programs by minimizing interruptions during class time, we request that students arrive on time for the school day with all the items they require (i.e. homework, lunch, physical education clothes etc.) Allergen Aware Please take special note that we have children in our school who have very serious allergies to nut products. According to Sabrina’s Law, we must make every effort to maintain a nut free environment in order to help keep all children safe. We ask that you not bring in or send in any food items to be shared with other students in the class. Please note that baked goods and treats are not permitted. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are certain you will agree that these measures are necessary in order to ensure the safety and welfare of our children. Personal Property The school does not take any responsibility for the loss or theft of personal items brought onto school premises by students. The school will therefore, not reimburse or replace lost or stolen articles, under any circumstances. This will include all articles of clothing (label items with a marker); personal school supplies such as fancy or expensive pens, markers, binders and pencil cases, etc.; simple or electronic toys, calculators, laptops, iPod’s, CD’s, cell phones, etc. Please note that collector cards of any kind are not permitted, in addition to all cell phones and any other social media devices. These items will be immediately confiscated by staff and brought to the Principal’s attention. We ask both parents and students for their full co-operation in this matter. (Please note that the Board’s insurance policy does not cover property owned by staff or students). Safe Arrival and Departure We continue to remind you to contact the school before 8:30 a.m. if your child is going to be absent from school. If we are unable to take your call, you can leave a message on our answering machine. Please ensure that we have a current emergency number where you can be contacted. If you are picking up your child early, please send a note to your child’s teacher. Please be sure to report to the office to sign them out. If you are returning before the end of the day, please sign your child back in at the office. All students on buses must ride the buses to and from school every day. Reporting of cancellations or closures due to inclement weather Cancellation of school bus transportation or school closures due to inclement weather will be reported through the following vehicles: News releases to all media outlets in Toronto (Note: although the news release is provided to the media outlets, there is no guarantee that all television and radio stations will broadcast the information in a timely fashion.) Communications will endeavour to send an email to everyone on exchange to advise them of any cancellations or closures. Communications will also endeavour to send out the information electronically to E-News subscribers (Note: If you do not already subscribe to E-News, but wish to do so, please visit our website at www.tcdsb.org and click on the ENews icon on the top right hand side of the homepage). Updates will also be posted on the Board’s 24-hour information line, 416-222-8282, extension 2873, as well as it being posted on the Board’s website at www.tcdsb.org or www.tcdsb.org/weather.html , as well as on Twitter @TCDSB. The Transportation Department will also post this information on its website at http://www.schoolbus.to/c_home.asp Parking Inclement Weather On days when the weather is inclement, the students may be permitted to enter the building at 8:15 am. On such days, the recess periods may be indoor and those students who stay for lunch will be supervised in the building. Weather conditions must be particularly severe, cold weather alone does not warrant an early entry into the building or indoor recess periods. Those decisions will be made accordingly. We believe that children profit greatly from recess breaks as they get out into the fresh air and burn off some energy in play activities. This will make them more alert and ready to continue their studies when they come in. It is important for children, particularly the younger children in the primary grades, to come to school dressed properly for the weather. A reminder to everyone that students who are well enough to be at school are well enough to go out for recess. We do not have personnel to supervise students who wish to stay in for recess due to illness. If they are too ill to go out for recess, then they should be home for the day. This will allow for quicker recovery and less teaching and learning time lost to illness. For information on the TCDSB Guidelines for weather conditions, please go to http://www.tcdsb.org/FORSTUDENTS/Health andSafety/Documents/GuidelinesforWeather Conditions.pdf Attendance, Punctuality and Preparation The Education Act states that students must attend school regularly and punctually. Parents are to notify the school (416)393-5290 of a child’s absence. You may call anytime and leave a message on the answering machine. Students who arrive late for school must check in at the main office to ensure safe arrival and to help in keeping accurate attendance profiles. Attendance referrals will be sent to the Social Worker and persistent tardiness may result in progressive discipline. Students are expected to arrive prior to the bell. All students are to arrive prepared to work and learn. Preparation includes the completion of daily assignments that are done to the best of the individual student’s ability. Preparation also implies that the student devotes appropriate time to study in advance of test situations. A reminder that the school parking lot is for staff only. Please do not use it for parking as we do not have enough spots for staff. Our students have been instructed not to enter the parking lot for safety reasons. Father Glaba has graciously volunteered the use of the church parking lot for our parents. Please observe and respect the “in” and “out” flow in the church parking lot. There is absolutely NO PARKING in the handicapped spaces, or in the fire route at the front of the school. The fine is substantial and we need to have those spaces clear for their appropriate use by those that need them. A reminder to all that Renault is strictly a “Drop Off Kiss and Ride”, and there is absolutely no parking permitted within the sign boundaries. Everyone is encouraged to use the Kiss and Ride in the school parking lot. Police and Parking Enforcement have assured us that Renault will be closely monitored for proper use. Medication Principals, teachers and support staff of the TCDSB are not permitted to administer any type of prescription medication during the school day, unless we have written authorization signed by you the parent, and the prescribing physician. The forms to dispense any medication must be updated on a regular basis and are available from the school principal. Please be advised that staff in TCDSB schools will not dispense nonprescription medications to students. Students who need “puffers” should have one at school and at home. All medications will be stored in the main office. Please notify the school if your child suffers from any type of allergy. Children’s Choir at All Saints Church We are very excited to announce that we will be starting a Children's Choir for youths in Grades 2 to 8. Rehearsals will begin in March and be held at All Saints Church on Thursdays after school. High school students who play musical instruments are also welcome to volunteer. More details to come soon. Anyone with questions and those interested in participating or volunteering their time and talents may speak to Stefani Bedin or email her at [email protected] A Matter of Safety Now that the winter season has arrived, there are a few issues that need to be addressed. 1. Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the cold weather. They should have mittens or gloves, a hat, a winter coat, boots and possibly a scarf. Unless we have extreme wind chill factors, children will be out for recess. Label your child’s belongings to avoid any mix-ups with other children. 2. We request that you send a pair of shoes to be kept at school so that children can wear them after removing their boots. Children will not be allowed to wear their boots inside the classroom. If your child wears his/her running shoes to school, they will have to be a second pair of running shoes should be used for gym classes. No outside shoes are to be worn in classes. 3. Snow pants are also encouraged. It is impossible to keep young children off the snow. Snow pants will keep them dry outside. 4. Please reinforce what we are emphasizing at school; that is, that snow must remain on the ground. Once snow is picked up, it is easily made into a snowball and thrown at others. Snowball throwing can lead to serious injury. “I have decided to stick with love, for I know that love is ultimately the only answer to mankind’s problems.” Martin Luther King Jr. Extra-Curricular Activities School Hockey Team Our All Saints Thunder Hockey team is gearing up for a fantastic season! With their coaches, the team has been practicing on Wednesdays at Pine Point Arena. Tournaments are scheduled to begin late March and early April. Keep at it! W5H The All Saints’ W5H team is gearing up for another year of trivia and competition. The format is similar to Jeopardy with contestants buzzing in with answers to questions involving general knowledge, math, language, pop culture and sports. The school has two teams, one at the junior grade level and one at the intermediate level. Competitions take place in February and April and give students a chance to show off their vast array of knowledge. We look forward to an exciting year! Valentine Candygrams!! This year, we continue to offer our students an opportunity to buy candygrams and send them out to students and teachers in our school. We will be selling Candygrams from January 30th until February 13th, and deliver them to the classes on Tuesday February 14th, 2017. Every morning at 11:05 am, students will go to the classrooms to sell and students will have the opportunity to buy the candygrams, at this time. Students always look forward to the candygrams, and we hope that this year, our Candygram Drive will be a success. Happy messages for a Happy Valentine’s Day. The Candygram Committee Chess Club Ms. Valaitis heads up the chess club and it continues to provide great training from professional coaches. We will participate in the Chess Tournaments sponsored by the Board. Goalie: Julian Mandarino, Stephen Pace Coaches: Mr. Grossi, Mr. Langiano and Mr. Ferrerra (Teacher Candidate) Junior Girls’ Indoor Soccer On Friday, January 27th, 2017, the junior girls’ indoor soccer team attended the soccer tournament at St. Demetrius School. During the round robin, All Saints was undefeated, winning all 3 games. We even managed to not let a single goal in during the entire tournament! At the end of the round robin, All Saints took first place with a total of 9 points!!! This meant that we advanced to the championship round. We played St. Demetrius in the final, and boy it sure was a nail biter of a game! We tied the game 0-0, resulting in a shoot out to decide who would be the champions. The shoot-out was intense! However, we still managed to score the most goals, and we WON the championship with a final score of 3-1!!! We would like to thank all of the parents who took the time to come to the tournament to support and cheer us on. Mme Ferrarelli, Mme Nguyen and Mr. Langiano would like to congratulate and thank the girls for their hard work, dedication and team spirit! The members of this year’s girls’ junior indoor soccer team are: Adriana Gallucci, Naiyah Elder, Emma Wong, Kaelee Mallo, Iris Spyropoulos, Katrina Martyn, Catarina Goncalves-Aldighieri, Emilia Pires, Dalia Oliveira, Madeline Pelosi, Chiara Di Fonzo, Giulia Sette, Sofia Dodaro and Kayla Al Hariri. We look forward to another awesome soccer season next year! Go All Saints Go! All Saints Basketball The start of the 2016-2017 pre-season for both the boys and the girls’ basketball began in late 2016 with both teams working determinedly at their practices and seeing some exhibition action. The boys will see their first tournament action in early February, when they host an after school tournament here at All Saints on February 7th. It will be a busy time for the young men as they will have numerous exhibition games mixed in with their practice sessions. The boys are hoping their experience of getting All Saints' first ever Jr. Boys pennant last year can carry over to success at the intermediate level. Their season officially starts on Feb. 15th (either at Our Lady of Victory or St. Gregory). The girls are fine-tuning their consistently strong play and are setting their sights on capturing their 5th Divisional pennant in their fifth year under the helm of Mr. Takacs. The 5-year championship streak would be a personal best for coach Takacs. Hopefully, the recent gold medal victory at the St. Joseph's College School tournament is a clear indicator that the girls are primed and ready to head back to the city round. The ladies will officially start their season on Feb. 16th at St. Gregory, but will host a pre-season, after school tournament here at All Saints on Monday, February 13th. Good luck to both teams and keep your eye out for the results of the regular season in the next Newsletter! Toy Mountain Campaign Huge Success This year, our school, All Saints, participated in the Toy Mountain Campaign in partnership with All Saints Parish. Our Student Leaders led the campaign as they created jingles, wrapped boxes, organized the toys and delivered them to the church for pick-up. All students brought in a new and unwrapped toy for a student their own age. The campaign was a huge success at our school as we raised over 600 toys for all age groups! For every student who brought in a toy, they received a felt ornament to print their name to indicate their charitable contribution. The felt ornaments were hung on our school Christmas tree. The Student Leaders delivered the toys to the church where Father Andrezj welcomed them and helped them organize them for pick-up. We are very proud of their efforts and the students really learned and experienced the true meaning of charity. We would like to share some of the photos that we took during the campaign at our school and church. Nothing says Happy Valentines like chocolates! On Friday, February 10th All Saints students will be attending an assembly to kick off our fundraiser. Each child will receive a box of World’s Finest Chocolates to sell to their families and friends. Chocolate sales will finish on Monday, February 27, 2017. Each case has 30 chocolate bars which cost $3.00 each. We have lots of great prizes to give away! Top 3 sellers, Top class, Early Bird Prizes and much, much more! MENTAL MATH STRATEGIES 25+25, 25+26, 25+24, 25+28 ADDITION Break Up the Numbers Strategy This strategy is used when regrouping is required. One of the addends is broken up into its expanded form and added in parts to the other addend. For example 57 + 38 might be calculated in this way: 57 + 30 is 87 and 8 more is 95. Splitting Split numbers into place value of digits 28 + 44 = 20 + 40 + 8 + 4 376 + 243 = 300 + 200 + 70 + 40 + 6 + 3 Front-End (left to right) Strategy This commonly used strategy involves adding the front-end digits and proceeding to the right, keeping a running total in your head. For example, 124 + 235 might be calculated in the following way: Three hundred (200 + 100), fifty (20+30) nine (4 + 5). Rounding for Estimation Rounding involves substituting one or more numbers with “friendlier” numbers with which to work. For example, 784 + 326 might be rounded as 800 + 300 or 1100. Front-End Estimation This strategy involves adding from the left and then grouping the numbers in order to adjust the estimate. For example 5239 + 2667 might be calculated in the following way: Seven thousand (5000 + 2000), eight hundred (600 +200) – no, make that 900 (39 and 67 is about another hundred). That’s about 7900 Compatible Number Strategy Compatible numbers are number pairs that go together to make “friendly” numbers. That is, numbers that are easy to work with. To add 78 + 25 for example you might add 75 + 25 to make 100 and then add 3 to make 103. Near Compatible Estimation Knowledge of the compatible numbers that are used for mental calculations is used for estimation. For example, in estimating 76 + 45 + 19 +26 +52, one might do the following mental calculation: 76 + 26 and 52 + 45 sum to about 100. Add the 19. The answer is about 219. Balancing Strategy A variation of the compatible number strategy, this strategy involves taking one or more from one addend and adding it to the other. For example, 68 + 57 becomes 70 + 55 (add 2 to 68 and take 2 from 57) Clustering in Estimation Clustering involves grouping addends and determining the average. For example, when estimating 53 + 47 + 48 + 58 +52, notice that the addends cluster around 50. The estimate would be 250 (5 x 50) Special Tens Strategy In the early grades, students learn the number of pairs that total ten – 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, and so on. These can be extended to such combinations as 10 and 90, 300 and 700, etc. Compensation Strategy In this stage, you substitute a compatible number for one of the numbers so that you can more easily compute mentally. For example, in doing the calculation 47 + 29 one might think (47 + 30) – 1. Consecutive Number Strategy When adding three consecutive numbers, the sum is three times the middle number. Doubles and Near Doubles Start with double fact they know, then pick closely related to an “almost double” followed by some near doubles 30+30, 29+31, 28+30, 29+29 Making Jumps of Ten Keep one number whole and jumps of ten are added to it 28 + 44 = 44 + 10 + 10 + 8 (decompose 8 into 6 and 2) 3 486 + 1 214 = 3 486 + 1 000 + 200 + 10 + 4 Moving to the Next Friendly Number Units are added first to reach a friendly number 98 + 37 = 98 + 2 + 35 = 100 + 35 = 135 27 + 49 = 26 + 50 36 + 118 = 34 + 120 227+164=230+161 Swapping: Switching digits (all 9 digits in same number) 39 + 92 = 32 + 99 293+919=999+213 (then move to nearest friendly number and compensate (1000+212=1212) SUBTRACTION Compatible Number Estimation Knowledge of compatible numbers can be used to find an estimate when subtracting. Look for the near compatible pairs. For example when subtracting 1014 – 766, one might think of the 750 – 250 pairing. Front-End Strategy When there is no need to carry, simply subtract from left to right. To subtract 368 – 125 think 300 – 100 = 200, 60 – 20 = 40, 8 – 5 = 3. The answer is 234. Front-End Estimation For questions with no carrying in the highest two place values, simply subtract those place values for a quick estimation. For example, the answer to $465.98 - $345.77 is about $120.00 Compatible Numbers Strategy This works well for powers of 10. Think what number will make the power of 10. For example, to subtract 100 – 54, think what goes with 54 to make 100. The answer is 46. Equal Additions Strategy for Subtraction This strategy avoids regrouping. You add the same number to both the subtrahend and minuend to provide a “friendly” number for subtracting, then subtract. For example, to subtract 84 – 58, add too to both numbers to give 86 – 60. This can be done mentally. The answer is 26. Compensation Strategy for Subtraction As with addition, subtract the “friendly” number and add the difference. For example, $3.27 - $0.98 – ($3.27 - $1.00) + $0.02 = $2.29 “Counting On” Strategy for Subtraction Visualize the numbers on a number line. For example, 110 – 44. You need 6 to make 50 from 44, then 50 to make 100, then another 10 to get 56. “Counting On” Estimation “Counting On” can also be used for estimation. For example, to estimate 894 – 652, think that 652 + 200 gives about 850. Then another 50 gives about 900. The difference is about 250 about 900. The difference is about 250 TCDSB Math Dept Monthly Update from the Board February 2017 A presentation for parents and educators on February 22, 2017, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Catholic Education Centre, 3rd Floor, 80 Sheppard Avenue East Learn more about the programs and services provided by the Psychology Department, TCDSB https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SpecialEduca tion/psychology/Pages/default.aspx February is National Inclusive Education Month Learn more about the TCDSB’s Catholic Equity and Inclusive Education Policy: https://www.tcdsb.org/Board/Policies/Pages/hm24.aspx Toronto Catholic District School Board has declared Friday, May 5, 2017 as Parish Family Day.
