Enriching the lives

SPRING 2016
VOLUME XXXVI-2
The Cat Care Society Newsletter: Enriching the lives of people and cats.
From Your Executive Director
Greetings and happy spring to you, our cat care
partners!
As we transition from winter to spring, we celebrate the successes and changes we’ve seen at Cat
Care Society (CCS) over the last several months. As
always, our primary goal is to provide the best care
possible for homeless cats while they wait to find
their perfect “forever homes”.
The Society’s first order of business in 2016 was the
recruitment of an Executive Director.
It has been my privilege to serve first as Shelter Manager, and now as Executive
Director, for Cat Care Society. My promotion to this post left the Shelter
Manager position vacant. But we didn’t need to search far to fill it – the perfect
candidate was already a member of our staff.
Rianda Copeland, CCS lead veterinary technician, has been promoted to Shelter
Manager. Rianda brings over six years clinic and operations management
experience and her skill set will help CCS continue to grow and expand shelter
operations.
With these key positions now filled, it’s time to move forward with our goals
for 2016:
•
Complete the improvements to the CCS Cat Clinic.
•
Boost cat and kitten adoptions by 30% (from 340 to 510).
•
•
•
•
•
Expand our community outreach programs including: Humane education
programs and seminars; Perpet-U-Care program; temporary care program;
Nibbles n’ Kibbles Food Bank; and nursing home visits.
Increase cat and kitten intakes by 40% (from 383 to 536).
Expand our foster care network by 40% (from 15 foster homes to 25).
Enhancements Begin
for the New and
Improved Cat Clinic
at Cat Care Society!
We have big plans for the Cat Clinic
at Cat Care Society (CCS) – plans that
mean an even wider array of treatments and surgeries, with newer,
more efficient equipment, which
means more care, for more cats, in a
welcoming and attractive setting.
Joining us is our new Veterinarian,
Dr. Katie Waisanen MS DVM, who
brings a wealth of veterinary, surgical,
preventive care, and business development knowledge to the CCS team.
Shantal Blea continues as our lead
clinic veterinary technician and her
technical skill set and knowledge
base continue to expand and develop
as she grows with the CCS team.
With our veterinary care team in
place, we are updating and streamlining veterinary care protocols to
ensure the highest quality care to both
the clinic patients and the shelter cats.
Reintroduce our Nine Lives Legacy Society (estates/wills) and Nine Lives
Guardianship Program (cats); and increase membership in the Nine Lives
Partners Giving Club (monthly giving) by 25% (from 77 to 97).
Continue to expand our fundraising efforts:
•
•
•
We have multiple crowd fund campaigns planned this spring to assist
with the purchase of much needed equipment for the clinic and to
cover the costs of extra care for cats with serious health issues.
Our Second Annual Paws on the Green Golf Tournament will be held at
the Meadows Golf Club on June 17, 2016.
With Tails of the Painted Cats now on a biennial cycle, and thus not
being held in 2016, CCS will present the “Festival of Felines, Unveiling
of Sue Sioux’s Painted Cat” at an open house/craft fair this summer.
In addition, we will also host a donor appreciation event for major

We will end 2016 with our beloved Santa Paws Festival, CCS
Christmas Ornament Donation Drive and our annual Colorado Gives
Day campaign.
The Cat Care Society is growing and changing like never before. Already in
2016 we’ve found forever homes for more than 45 cats and kittens including seniors, Elly and Benvolio. With your continued support, CCS is poised to
continue its growth and development as we rescue, medically treat and adopt
many more felines in need.
All of us in the CCS family - donors, volunteers, board members and staff members - are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our cats.
That’s why we continue to shower the residents of our shelter with abundant
love and exceptional care.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our cats and our mission.

ing room furnishings and added new artwork. The
artwork is part of the new Cat House Gallery at the
Cat Clinic, which includes rotating art for sale. 40%
of the art sales benefit CCS! Visitors will also find
new and useful cat-related reading materials on
health, behavior, and feline care. In addition, we are
looking to replace our X-ray machine with a digital
model as well as hoping to purchase an ultrasound
machine and in-house bloodwork unit. These equipment upgrades would mean less outsourcing; more
savings we can pass on to you; faster turnaround
on imaging and tests; allowing us to provide the
highest quality veterinary care for your cat!
Dr. Katie Waisanen
We are planning a mix of fundraising and crowdfund activities to help us fund these enhancements,
ensuring that the CCS operating budget will be
minimally taxed. In addition, we’re about to launch
a full scale marketing campaign to spread the
word in our community about our full-service Cat
Clinic, our expanded services, and some upcoming specials you’ll want to take advantage of.

SPRING 20163
“Mama Pretty” = Pretty Awesome!
Early last summer, a pretty and
friendly little gray-and-white cat
and her litter of kittens became residents of the Cat Care Society (CCS)
shelter. Not surprisingly, the kittens
were adopted quickly but mama
remained, waiting for her forever
home. She is such a pretty little girl
and she was also a very good mama.
So, she became known as “Mama
Pretty” and is one of the most popular members of the CCS family.
Soon after her arrival, Mama Pretty
developed a severe head-tilt. The
veterinarian informed us that a com-
puted tomography (CT)
scan and “deep ear cleaning” were required in
order to determine what
was causing the head
tilt, and what treatment
was needed to correct it.
These procedures can
be quite costly, and this
one was no exception. We
immediately embarked
on an ‘emergency’ fundraising campaign using
the crowd funding site
LoveAnimals.org. Thanks
to your compassion
and generosity, we not
only raised the entire
$4,400 needed for Mama Pretty’s
procedures but we raised an additional $1,440! (Additional donations
received above the $4,400 went into
a medical fund to help other cats in
need of specialized medical care).
Although her ear condition was successfully healed after the procedure,
the head tilt remained. Despite her
oddity—and true to Mama Pretty’s
courageous spirit—her ‘abnormality’
became just another endearing quality of this friendly, outgoing, playful
and affectionate cat. Anyone who has
met Mama Pretty no doubt fell in love
with her personality and that quirky
little head-tilt. She would likely have
been adopted quickly, but after the
procedures she needed continued
treatment and had to be placed on
medical hold. We were unable to offer
her to potential families until she
could be cleared by the veterinarian.
Finally, on February 12th Mama Pretty
was deemed healthy and the medical hold was lifted. It was no surprise
that by February 14th (Valentine’s
Day!) our pretty little mama was
adopted, and she is now living a
very happy life in her new home.
Mama Pretty got off to a rough start,
but she never let those challenges
affect her. With your generous support and the exceptional care given by
the veterinarian team and CCS technicians, she was given a second chance
and most important, the quality of life
to play and purr with her new family.
She’ll be missed, but we couldn’t be
happier with the outcome for Mama
Pretty; and we think she’s a pretty
awesome cat!
Meet Elizabeth
Elizabeth is a sweet senior lady who
has been at the shelter since 2014. She
doesn’t want to miss any of the day’s
events, so she enjoys spending her day
on her pillow located on the front
counter. Elizabeth has a huge personality and she loves to tell you all about
her day. She is quite famous for greeting every visitor that enters the
shelter! She has been on medical hold
for some time due to anemia. We have
4

been treating her for this and it has
helped manage her condition.
Elizabeth is rechecked by our veterinarian regularly to monitor her
progress. We are hopeful she will be
able to come off medical hold this
spring and she can find her forever
home! Next time you stop by CCS
please be sure to stop by the front
desk to say hello to Elizabeth!

There are many reasons for a cat to be
drooling, and most of them are not cute
and innocent. If your notice that your
cat is suddenly drooling you should
get him or her to a vet for a checkup. Some underlying issues that can
cause drooling are nausea (caused by
many things), dental disease, kidney
disease, toxin ingestion, trauma or
injury, and foreign bodies. All of which
require professional veterinary care.
The above issues can be addressed by
your family veterinarian. Getting your
cat treated for any of these issues can
help in many ways including resolving
bad breath, prevent infections in your
cats mouth, blood, urine and kidneys,
decrease your cats risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, increase your
cats lifespan and quality of life, and
of course also address the drooling.
Why Cats Rule
Boxers or briefs? Paper or plastic? Cats
or Dogs? The argument continues as
to the merits of dogs vs. cats, and who
of the two makes the better pet. While
all animals are cool, cats rule, and here
are just a few of the reasons why:
• They skid on wood floors.
• They wait until you go to sleep
to get on the counters and
dash around the house;
• and relax better than any
creature on earth.
• They’re very clean!
• They give massages;
• hide their poop;
• keep us warm;

have a “happy drooler.” Occasionally
there are some cats who drool in
response to positive stimulation,
which is typically accompanied by
purring and other signs of affection.

Where Are They Now? A Continuing Series: Your Donation Dollars at Work
We love sharing stories with you
about cats in our shelter who have
gone on to loving homes. There have
been so many of them, thanks to
the generosity of donors like you.
ing that she uses as a backup.
Bella has also become a screen junkie,
just like many of us these days. She
has her very own tablet, or at least, she
thinks it’s hers. Whenever her family takes out the tablet and starts it up,
she is right there wanting to play with
her virtual mouse. Bella loves to play
with all sorts of toys, virtual and real.
Sometimes she even falls asleep while
playing with her roundy round toy.
It’s your financial support that allows
us to carry out our mission: caring for
stray, neglected, and mistreated cats,
and finding loving homes for as many
of them as possible. We couldn’t serve
cats and the people who love them the
way we do, without that support.
This time our story is about a cat
named Bella. As usual, it’s a heartwarming tale...
Bella’s story starts before she ever
reached Colorado, when she was adopted
from a Humane Society in Arizona as a
kitten. After moving to Colorado Bella’s
guardian became a victim of domestic
violence and stalking, and decided the
only way to protect Bella was to give
her up. Bella was six years old at that
time. It was difficult for her mom to give
her up, but she knew that Bella would
be safe at CCS. She described Bella as a
quiet girl, who needed to be given time
to warm up to people. She also said
that once she warmed up Bella was a
talkative lady who wanted to spend all
of her time with her favorite person.
When Bella first arrived at CCS she was
shy, and didn’t want to eat. She was
quiet and withdrawn, and frightened
at all the changes in her life. The staff
showered her with their love, care
and affection, and finally a week after
she arrived she started to nibble on a
bit of her food. She started to warm
up quickly after that, and exactly one
month later she was adopted by a family member of one of our volunteers.
6
SPRING 2016
Now came another big change for Bella.
Not only did she have to move again, but
now she had to adjust to a new feline
housemate! The family that adopted her
had an eight year old cat named Vinnie.
The family did everything right by introducing Bella and Vinnie slowly, letting
them adjust to the smells and sounds of
each other before letting them meet face
to face. Of course there was some hissing
while they got to know each other, but
within a few weeks Bella had selected
her favorite spots in the house, and was
cleaning up Vinnie’s leftovers after meals.
She also selected her favorite new toys,
which included a laser pointer and
a turbo scratcher. Bella and Vinnie
even started to accept sharing the
bed, which is of course a huge thing.
One year later…Bella is doing amazing,
and is a complete joy to her new family.
She has shown that she is a natural mouser. Her favorite “mouse” is a little sock
filled with fluff. Every single night when
her family goes to bed, Bella catches her
mouse. She cries for her family “Look
what I got! Look what I
got! MOUSE! MOUSE!” as
she then drops her mouse
by the bed and waits to
be praised and petted for
her achievement. Then
sometimes she quietly
picks up her mouse, carries it to the front room,
and catches it again. Her
family has tried hiding
the sock, but she has a
red Christmas stock-
Bella has also really helped out her
new brother Vinnie. Before the family adopted Bella they lost two other
furry kids. Vinnie had never been an
only cat before, and was so worried and
upset that he was literally pulling out
his fur in clumps. Now with Bella there
he has stopped pulling out his fur, and
relaxed again. They aren’t best friends,
but they are happy companions.
Her family adores her, and would
happily brag about her all day long.
Bella has found a safe place where
she can play and be loved, living
her life to the fullest every day.
Bella’s story is a tale that is typical of
the cats that come to CCS. They are
given the best veterinary treatment,
sheltered with love, and made ready
for adoption into a permanent home.
But there are so many more cats out
there in need of our care – so many
more happy-ending stories waiting to
be told. With additional support, we
can increase our intake of homeless,
neglected and endangered cats; we
can further build out our foster-care
program to include many senior
and special-needs cats, as well as
kittens; we can ramp up our community outreach and bring more cats
and more loving families together.
If you’ll continue to help us meet our mission we can do so much more. Since we
don’t receive any government funding,
all of our financial support must come
from the community – generous donors
like you who love cats. May we call on you
for your gift of assistance to the cats?
There are several ways to give your gift.
You can send a check (or authorize a
credit-card charge) in the enclosed return

envelope, drop off a check at the shelter,
or make a donation online at catcaresociety.org. We can use either a one-time
financial donation or an ongoing monthly
gift – easy and convenient to set up.
Here are some of the ways your
contribution will help:
• $2,500 provides five
months worth of dry food
for the shelter cats.
CCS Spotlight
• $1,000 pays for 14 spay and
17 neuter surgeries—preventing 31 cats from giving birth
to multiple litters of kittens.
• $500 provides two cats with
a year of medical care under
our Perpet-U-Care program.
• $250 buys three weeks worth
of litter for the shelter.
• $100 covers two weeks worth
of antibiotics for five sick cats.
Please help us today with the most
generous gift you can give for the
care of the cats. Thank you so much
for your past and ongoing support.

Aggression In Cats
THIS POST IS BY DR. JEAN HOFVE, DVM, COURTESY OF JACKSON GALAXY’S WEBSITE
http://jacksongalaxy.com/2014/08/21/aggression-in-cats/
With cat-to-human aggression, the
roots almost always lie with the
person. Cats who, as kittens, were
played with or handled roughly
by one or more people, and people
who don’t understand cat behavior and unwittingly encourage
aggressive behavior, are most
often to blame. Jackson has featured many such people on My Cat
From Hell. However, pain and other
medical conditions can also trigger aggression, so don’t neglect
that all-important check-up!
Feline aggression is absolutely treatable; but to do it right may take
considerable time and effort. Here’s
a little rundown of the most common
behavioral mischief in the cat repertoire. Serious aggression can and
should be treated by a professional.
PLAY/PREDATORY
AGGRESSION
Play/Predatory aggression involves
the cat’s normal hunting and killing
behaviors. In many cats, their play
becomes too aggressive because
their human companions encouraged that behavior when they
were kittens. Rough-housing with
bare hands is almost irresistible
when kittens are small. Everyone
loved that video of the“surprised
kitten” on YouTube–who wouldn’t?
Unfortunately, though, that’s a good
way to teach a kitty that bare hands
are (a) threatening, and (b) okay to
play with. It’s adorable when they’re
little, but when the attacker
is 15 pounds with inch-long
fangs…not so much! For many
adult cats who still play inappropriately, or turn their
predatory drive on
humans or other animals in the home, the
underlying problem
is usu-

ally boredom and excess energy. Cats
who are especially territorial may
be also more prone to predatory
aggression. To correct the problem,
never play rough with your cat,
but more importantly, institute
regular sessions of Play Therapy.
PETTING-RELATED
(OVERSTIMULATION)
AGGRESSION
Petting-related (overstimulation)
aggression is frustrating and frightening. One minute you’re having
a cuddly moment with your sweet
furball, and the next minute the cat
is going in seven directions at once,
and you’re left bleeding from multiple
bites or scratches. Cats are highly
sensitive creatures, and it may be
that there’s just so much stimulation
the cat can take; or there are certain
“off-limits” areas that are certain to
draw blood–from you–if you stray too
close. There may be a pain issue, or a
bad memory, but whatever the reason,
very few cats attack without warning, though it may seem that way. It’s
important to become an expert in
feline body language. Widening or
“blackening” of the eyes (dilated
pupils), ears turned or laid back,
twitching tail, whiskers flattening
against the face; these are all signs
of impending doom. The trick is to
STOP before the cat feels it necessary to take the next step. Never try
to restrain the cat! Gently remove all
of your vulnerable body parts from
the vicinity; or if
that’s not possible,
try using distraction
to shift kitty’s attention to something
that can’t be hurt,
such as a toy, throw
pillow, or rolledup socks. Be sure to
leave such items in
strategic locations
around the house
so there’s always
one handy. And, of course, Play
Therapy will help diffuse some of
the stress and anxiety that may be
contributing to the cat’s sensitivity.
REDIRECTED AGGRESSION
Redirected aggression occurs
when the cat becomes frightened
or upset, but rather than run or go
after the real cause, the cat instead
turns on the handiest target. Often
this innocent victim is another cat
or pet in the home, or the guardian.
Thereafter, the mere sight of the victim brings up all that upset all over
again, and the aggressor continues
to attack. If the issue is between
two cats, the best course of action
in this case is complete separation
followed by gradual reintroduction, as if the two had never met. Of
course, Play Therapy will also help.
It gives the aggressor an acceptable outlet for her frustration, and
it restores the victim’s confidence.
FEAR-INDUCED AGGRESSION
Fear-induced aggression is something
all veterinarians are very familiar
with; it’s something we just hate to see
come through that door! Fear aggressive cats operate on the theory that
“the best defense is a good offense.”
These cats can get pretty offensive!
But fear aggression can occur in any
situation where the cat feels both
threatened and trapped. The sympathetic nervous system kicks in with
the “fight or flight” reflex; if there’s
nowhere to flee, the only option
is to fight. A fear-aggressive cat is
extremely fearsome in itself; this is a
cat that can hurt you, badly. Be very
careful! Once again (you’re getting
the idea, aren’t you?) Play Therapy
will help with the cat’s overall level of
anxiety, not to mention wear him out!
INTACT CAT AGGRESSION
Intact cat aggression includes both
maternal aggression (totally normal behavior in a new mother when
VOLUME XXXVI-2
defending her kittens), and territorial tomcat aggression. Intact
cats, both male and female, tend
to be more aggressive as well as
highly territorial; and they are
also apt to spray urine on any and
all convenient surfaces. The solution: spay/neuter, of course!
POD-CAT AGGRESSION
Pod-cat aggression occurs when
one cat has been out of the house,
whether to the veterinarian, groomer,
or other destination, and when he
returns home, the other cat(s) act
aggressively toward him. My theory
is that, while cats rely primarily
on vision to identify other cats,
smell also plays a big role. When
the returning cat looks the
same but smells different
(from shampoo, anesthesia,
etc.), the conflict creates
suspicion that he’s an alien,
and must be driven out.
(If you don’t get the reference, see the classic movie,
Invasion of the Body Snatchers!)
People also report success putting
a drop of vanilla extract on all the
cats; I haven’t tried it, but lots of folks
swear by it. Temporary separation
may solve the problem; but occasionally there needs to be a complete
reintroduction. You can use flower
essences all around, too.
that routine as soon as your new cat
enters the household (though it’s
never too late to start!). And no matter what, please do not even
consider declawing as a solution;
experts believe that declawing tends
to make an aggressive cat more
aggressive; and a cat bite is much
more serious than a scratch.
Conclusion
Feline aggression is no
joke, especially if it’s threatening the cat’s home–or life. It’s
a lot easier to fix a problem
early than after the behavior
has become entrenched. Don’t
just “put up with it” until you
snap. That’s not fair to anyone!
Regular Play Therapy will prevent
many behavior problems from developing in the first place, so establish

Sue Sioux is one of the most beloved
and popular CCS cats- so we decided
to make her into the shelter mascot, a
Painted Cat of our sweet Sue Sioux!
With the absence of the Painted Cats
in 2016, CCS will present the “Festival
of Felines, Unveiling of Sue Sioux’s
Painted Cat” at an open house and
craft fair. This event will be held at the
shelter on Saturday, August 27, 2016.
In addition to the open house/craft
fair, we will also host a donor appreciation event for a special viewing of the
completed Sue Sioux Painted Cat in
early September.
