SUMMERLEA NEIGHBOURHOOD DESCRIPTION Located west of 170th Street and south of 95th Avenue, Summerlea is home to the site of West Edmonton Mall, one of Edmonton’s major attractions and a focus of shopping and entertainment activities. Development in Summerlea began in the 1970s. The residential component of Summerlea, located in the north of the neighbourhood, was originally intended to be comparable to adjacent neighbourhoods in size, shape, form and density. However, the influence and expansion of the Mall heavily influenced Summerlea’s development and reduced the area available for residential development. The existing residential area is a mix of single-detached and multi family residences and most homes were built in the late 1970s and into the 1980s. Construction of a small number of new residential units has been fairly constant, however, and has continued into the 2000s. Single and semi detached homes account for slightly more than a third of all residential units in the neighbourhood, while apartment buildings under five stories high account for the majority of housing units. There is a large park located within the residential areas, and proximity to the Mall provides excellent access to a variety of commercial and service amenities as well as good transit service Summerlea was name for a summertime meadow, as the word “lea” is an alternative term for meadow. Summerlea appropriately has a large amount of parkland.
