About Napier House
Napier House is home to a maximum of
44 girls from Lower Fifth to Upper Sixth
in a combination of single, double or fourbed dorms, with three resident staff. There
is a fully-equipped kitchen as well as two
kitchens upstairs for hot drinks only, a
laundry room, a large common room and
two computer rooms.
Year groups are mixed throughout the
house, with senior girls supporting younger
boarders, helping girls make a wide range
of friends across the School.
4
5
Napier Who’s Who
There are three full-time residential staff in Napier. The Head of Boarding,
Mrs Olliver, also lives on the school site and spends some time in each of the
boarding houses, so there is always somebody on hand to offer you help, advice
and support.
Ms Laura Holloway, Housemistress
This year will be my second in Napier and at
Headington, where I also teach Classics and
assist in running the Oxbridge and Academic
Scholars programmes. Originally from Lancashire
and educated at university in Oxford, I live
in Napier with my partner James and our cat
Charlie. My interests include travelling widely
to discover exciting places across the world,
cinema, theatre, cooking and involving myself
fully in the many opportunities on offer in and
beyond school. In Napier we welcome everybody
into our friendly atmosphere, giving the support
and encouragement each girl needs to achieve her
personal goals.
6
Mrs Frances Graham, Nurse Matron
I have been resident in Napier for seven years now.
I trained as a nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital
and continued to work as a nurse in various medical
centres whilst accompanying my husband Duncan to
his Army postings. I have two grown-up children who
both went to boarding school.
Miss Rhiannon Warwick, Graduate House Assistant
I am looking forward to beginning my job as a Graduate
Boarding Assistant at Napier. I am also excited to move
back to Oxford, as this is where I am from originally,
although I grew up in Pembrokeshire, South West
Wales. I studied for my degree in Psychology at the
University of the West of England, Bristol.
Outside of my academic life, I have an active
and varied social life. I like to travel, go to music
festivals and socialise with friends. I enjoy keeping
active through sports and exercise such as running,
swimming and dancing. Sport was a big part of my
life at University as I was part of the Competitive
Cheerleading squad, and I was voted Captain of my
team in my final year.
Working with people and building relationships is one
of my passions, and I look forward to getting to know
all of the Napier girls. I can’t wait to start a fun, happy
and rewarding year at Headington.

Before you arrive
This section provides useful information about things that you will need to know
or to do before you arrive at Napier.

Guardians

What to bring
Doctors and medication
It is compulsory for all boarders to be registered with the school doctor, and you
should have already received information about how to do this. The doctor visits the
Health Centre twice a week for consultations with girls. If you need to see a doctor
at any other time, we can make an appointment for you at the surgery.
It is very important that House Staff are shown all medicines (including asthma
inhalers). Prescribed medication can be self administered once girls have completed
a Risk Assessment form with either Mrs Gordon (Senior School nurse) or Mrs
Graham. No over the counter medicines are to be kept by girls.
8
Guardians
All overseas pupils must have a guardian over the age of 25 in this country. It is
imperative that parents arrange guardianship and inform the Housemistress of
the guardian’s name, address and telephone number. If your parent or guardian
is away on holiday it is essential that an alternative adult is appointed to replace
them and that Ms Holloway is notified accordingly.
Holidays and exeats
There are two exeat weekends in every term, when the School and boarding houses
are closed and you must stay with your parents or guardian. Your parent or guardian
will be responsible for your safety from the time of leaving the school until you
return. Exeats begin at 4.00 pm on Friday (Napier House closes at 6.00 pm) and
end at 9.00 pm on Sunday (house re-opens from 6.00 pm). Please note that supper
will not be served at school at the end of an exeat, so please ensure you have eaten
before returning.
There is one half term holiday in the middle of each term, when the School and
boarding houses are closed. You are free to leave when school has finished on Friday
at 4.00 pm and Napier closes at 6.00 pm. You need to be back in school between
8.00 pm - 9.00 pm on the day before term resumes.
At the end of term, you must not leave school before the day and time
published as the end of term date on the school calendar (check the website
at www. h eadington. o rg). We ask that parents are meticulous in observing this
rule when booking flights or holidays, and we ask that all end of term travel
arrangements are confirmed with Ms Holloway at least two weeks before the date
of travel, giving details of airports and flight numbers where relevant. Exeat forms
are sent out to your parents.
Although we would prefer girls to be collected and brought back by their parents
and guardians, you may travel unescorted if your parents or guardians have given
9
Ms Holloway written permission for you to do so. Parents or guardians are
responsible for your safety once you have left the Boarding House, until you return.
We regret that we are not able to escort you to buses or trains, or to meet you, but
we can help book taxis if you need us to do so.
Dates for exeats, half term and the end of term can be found on our website at
www.headington.org.
House rules
Napier House is a happy and cheerful community, where everyone acts with
kindness, courtesy and consideration towards others at all times. You are therefore
expected to have good manners and act responsibly. House rules will be explained
to you when you arrive - there are not too many, but in order for a community to
work well together it is important that we stick to the same rules.
House sisters
An experienced boarder from your
house will write to you at home
before you come to Napier. She will
give you her contact details, and you
can stay in touch over the summer
asking any questions that you may
have about joining us. She will also be
on hand to help you when you arrive
in school at the start of term.
Insurance
Parents are advised to take out a personal effects insurance policy to cover any
valuables such as musical instruments, computers, mobile telephones, personal
stereos, sports or any other equipment which their daughter brings to school. The
School cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to a student’s property or loss
of money, chequebook or cash cards.
10
Lower Sixth Induction day
Lower Sixth induction day takes place the day
before autumn term starts. It is an opportunity
to spend time with your teachers, organise
your timetable, familiarise yourself with the
Sixth Form Centre and meet key members
of staff.
Rooms
In your first term you will be allocated a room
and someone to share with but in subsequent
terms you may be given a preference as to your
next room mate. We encourage you to bring posters and photographs for the
notice-boards and any favourite items to make your room homely.
School Uniform
Girls in Lower Fifth and Upper Fifth wear uniform throughout the school day.
Jewellery may not be worn with school uniform, other than a small cross and chain
and a single pair of ear studs. No make-up or nail varnish may be worn with uniform.
At the end of the school day you must change into home clothes.
Sixth Form dress code
Sixth Form students do not wear uniform. However, there is an expectation that
dress will be appropriate and suitable for the workplace. Smart, casual clothing is
acceptable for school, although there will be occasions when more formal wear is
required. It is perfectly acceptable to wear jeans, providing they are clean and not
ripped. Tops should be smart and long enough to cover the midriff. Shoulders should
be covered and ‘stringy’ tops are not allowed. There will be days in the school year
when you will be expected to dress appropriately for the occasion: Prize Giving, the
Carol Service and Foundation Day for example. For these occasions you will need
to have a smart blouse with a collar, a knee length or longer tailored skirt, evening
11
dress or trousers and smart shoes. Hair colour may not be changed unless it is
changed to another natural colour, and hair may not be dyed in school.
Start of Term
Details of your travel arrangements, including your method of travel to school,
your estimated time of arrival and any taxi requirements, must be given to the
Housemistress at least three days before the start of term. This information may
be sent by post, fax or email – see the inside front cover of this booklet for Napier
House contact details. The Boarding House opens at 7.00 am the day before the
start of term, and you need to be there by 6.00 pm at the latest in time for supper.
All term dates can be found on the school website at www.headington.org.
What to bring
We have limited space for storage in Napier, but if you’re an overseas student you are
allowed to store things during the holiday period, providing you are returning to school
the following term. There is no provision for storage of personal belongings for the
Upper Sixth at the end of their last term – you must take everything with you.
If you wish to bring basic essentials such as shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste
please feel free to do so. However, you can shop for all the basic necessities in
Headington or in Oxford when you arrive.
All items of clothing and equipment must be named - the School cannot be held
responsible for any loss or damage to possessions. We recommend that you give
important items such as passports to the house office when you arrive for safe-keeping.
If you choose to bring portable electrical appliances to school then they will need
to be PAT tested by a qualified electrician here at school before you will be able
to use them.

Birthdays
We do like to celebrate birthdays! We try to make each one special and encourage
girls to make cakes for their friends. They may also organise a little get-together in
the house. Some girls like to go out to tea, some prefer to have a take away and
some invite friends to their home at the weekend.
If you are a full boarder and you are invited to a day girl’s party at the weekend, you
can attend so long as you have written permission from your parents or guardian,
as well as an invitation from the parents or guardian of the girl whose party you
are attending.
14
Boarders’ service
We have a boarders’ service on site every Sunday evening. All girls are expected
to attend.
Communication
Your family and friends are important and there are many ways that you can keep
in touch with them:
Email
You’ll be given a school email address when you arrive at Headington which staff may use
to contact you directly. Notices of forthcoming events, coursework and prep deadlines
may also be sent by email. It is important that you check your email regularly.
Notice boards
Always keep an eye on the notice boards, especially the main white board by the
front door. These will provide you with information on activities and important day
to day notices.
By telephone
Mobile phones are allowed in the Boarding House but should only be used at
appropriate times. Mobile numbers should be logged with Ms Holloway. There are
three payphones in Napier for making and receiving calls and their numbers are at
the front and back of this booklet. Mobile phones should not be used after bedtimes.
15
In person
Visitors are welcome at Napier. Just make sure that you ask permission from the
duty member of staff before your visitor arrives, and that all visitors sign in and out
in the visitors’ book on the table near the front door.
Post
All post and parcels will be delivered to the house office.
Skype
We have a designated Skype booth in Napier you can use which is a great way to
keep in touch with family and friends away from school.
Feeling unwell
If you feel unwell, don’t worry as there is always someone who can help.
•
The Health Centre is open during the day time
•
We have a House Nurse Matron
•
If you feel unwell during the day go to the Health Centre or after 6.00 pm go
to the office to see a member of staff on duty. If you feel ill during the night,
see who is on duty, ring the house mobile and the member of staff on duty will
come and see you
Fire Alarms
The fire alarms are tested briefly every week, usually during school hours, and you
do not need to do anything. At any other time, the sounding of the fire alarm must
always be treated as an emergency situation. If anyone encounters a fire they must
break a fire panel immediately.
16
If the fire alarm sounds in the houses you must stay calm and leave the building
quickly by the nearest fire escape. The fire doors and exits are clearly marked in all
areas. Students will be shown where the nearest exit to their rooms is and practices
are carried out regularly. Everyone must stay quiet and calm at all times. Whilst
outside everyone is in silence and the house staff will direct you as to how you line
up and ensure that everyone is safe and accounted for. No-one may go back into
the building until a member of the house staff gives the ‘all clear’.
We have at least one fire practice every term but you should always treat the fire
alarm as if it were a real one. You never know – it might be.
All students must familiarise themselves with the procedure below:
•
Know the escape routes and locate your nearest exit
•
Leave the building calmly and quickly
•
Line up in silence
•
Remain silent until you are dismissed
Make sure you are safety conscious at all times by switching off all electrical
equipment when not in use.
Free time
We have one main common room in Napier which is used as a TV and games room
and is equipped with a DVD player, Wii and other games. This is shared by all the girls
in the House. Girls get together to watch regular programmes or play games. If you
wish to ‘book’ the TV for a particular programme and time you need to come and
speak to a member of staff about your request. We have a selection of DVDs in the
17
office and you can only watch DVDs that are suitable for your age. Please do not sit
and watch DVDs on your laptop during prep time or lights out or your laptop will be
confiscated. We have two computer rooms where there are fictional and educational
books which you may borrow and an electric piano to practise on.
School provides daily and weekly newspapers for everyone to read in house. These
are expected to stay in common areas and must not be taken and kept in rooms.
A whole host of extra-curricular activities are on offer after school for boarders
and day girls alike. There are many clubs and societies to join at school which take
place during free time. These range from sporting activities, like fencing classes and
trampolining, to drama rehearsals and debating societies. During the week, the main
free time is between 4 pm - 6 pm. It is really up to each
girl as to how they structure their free time, although
during this time each student is expected to take part in
an activity on a regular basis. House Staff will always
be available to help and guide on this matter. You will
find full details of school activities in your Activities
Booklet or on our website at www.headington. org.
There is so much to do at Headington that you will
probably find the most difficult thing is keeping a
good balance between activities, rest and work.
Throughout the course of the year we organise various
parties within the house and the boarding community.
Our biggest boarding party is the celebration of all our
cultures through our International Evening. You could
bring a traditional costume from home with you and
a recipe for a simple food dish you could cook. Other
parties include Christmas, Chinese New Year, Easter and
Leavers’ Parties.
18
Going out
Boarders are allowed out in the evening and at the weekends at the Housemistress’s
discretion and provided that you have permission from your parents/guardians. We
need to know where you are at all times so you must always inform the boarding
staff before leaving the Boarding House for any reason. You should tell a member
of staff where you are going and when you intend to return and you should carry
a working mobile phone with the boarding house number saved so that the House
can contact you at any time.
Depending on your age, you will be allowed out of school unaccompanied at certain
times during the week, provided we have permission from your parents. From Lower
Fifth upwards you may go in groups of two as long as you have two working mobiles
with credit. If not, you must go in groups of three or more.
Lower Fifth
Lower Fifth are allowed into Headington twice a week after
school and into Oxford at the weekends.
Upper Fifth
Upper Fifth are allowed into Headington after school every day
and into Oxford once a week. They are also allowed into Oxford
at the weekend.
Sixth Form
Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth are allowed into Headington and
Oxford after school every day. Once a week (Monday to Thursday)
they are allowed out in the evening returning by 10.00 pm and on
Friday or Saturday they must be back by 10.30 pm, with prior
permission from the House Staff.
All Sixth Formers must be in house by 9.00 pm on Sundays.
19
House committees
We have a house committee and a food committee and two girls from each year
group will usually be your representatives. They will bring any issues that need
raising to the meetings and will give feedback to the rest of the house. They may
also be asked to help organise or collate information on behalf of the House Staff
and House Prefect.
House meetings
These are held once a week and are a valuable source of information for future
events and to ensure the smooth running of the House. All girls must attend.
Kitchen duties
We have one main kitchen in house which needs to be kept clean and tidy. All girls
are included on kitchen duty rotas on a regular basis. At the end of the day you need
to make sure that the kitchen is in a clean and tidy state. We expect everyone to
clean up their own mess and wash and dry their dishes. The duty person will come
in and add the finishing touches.
Laundry
Most girls use school sheets and pillowcases. You change these once a week on a
given night, placing your dirty laundry in the laundry trolley. There are six washing
machines and tumble dryers in Napier where you can wash your own personal
laundry. You will need to provide your own washing powder – you can buy this
after you arrive.
Meals
All meals apart from breakfast at the weekend are taken in the Dining Hall. The food
provided at school meals is of a very high standard with a large variety of choice.
In addition, the House is provided with daily ‘stores’ which include milk, cereals,
bread, butter and spreads, juice and a selection of fruit. Girls may bring in their own
20
tuck although fridge space for any fresh produce
is limited. Dry produce can be stored in rooms.

confirmation of your weekend arrangements by Thursday night at the latest.
You will need parental/guardian permission to be out of school overnight at the
weekend. It is at the Housemistress’s discretion as to whether you are allowed out
overnight during the week and parental permission will also be required.
21
Personal finances
We do run a house bank where girls may deposit pocket money (cheque, cash or
bank transfer) into the house bank account. Each girl will have her own accounts
page in this and may withdraw money from the house account through the duty
member of staff.

Our weekend timetables are much more relaxed. These timetables give you an
idea of some of the things that might happen on a typical weekend. On Saturday

to go into Headington or Oxford on a Saturday for a couple of hours to explore the

Staying with friends
If you are a full boarder and you have an invitation to stay with a friend one
weekend, exeat or half term then written permission is needed from your parent/
guardian, the parent inviting you and Ms Holloway.
24
Study leave
In the summer term, students in Upper Fifth and the Sixth Form are allowed to leave
the Boarding House to revise with their parents or guardians if they wish. There is
no obligation to do so however and many girls prefer the peace and quiet of the
boarding house to help their concentration. It is vital that arrangements for staying
elsewhere are made with Ms Holloway so that all staff are aware of where students
are at all times. Upper Fifth and Upper Sixth students are free to leave after their
final examination.
Tuck and other snacks
There is a kitchen in the House where you can always get hot chocolate, cold drinks,
toast, spreads and fresh fruit. You can also bring your own tuck to school, but don’t
be tempted to eat too much. If you do bring tuck, you should keep it in your locker
outside the kitchen. Food and sweet drinks are not allowed in rooms.
Weekly boarding
Weekly boarders must sign out before leaving on a Friday evening. Girls returning
on Sunday evening should arrive by 9.00 pm.
There may be occasional weekends when weekly boarders will be required to stay in
school. At other times weekly boarders may stay in at the weekend by arrangement
with Mrs Olliver, the Head of Boarding.
25
Who can you talk to?
This booklet is intended to help you in times of difficulty and to make sure that you
know you have someone you can talk to. Please keep it in case you need to refer
to it. For example, if something is worrying you and you need to talk to someone,
then you could consider talking to the following people:
•
Your parents, guardian or family
•
Ms Holloway or any other member of Napier staff
•
Your Form Tutor
•
The School Counsellor
•
The Health Centre staff
•
Mrs Jordan (Headmistress)
•
Mrs Olliver (Head of Boarding)
•
Mr Smith (Deputy Head Pastoral)
•
Mr Howell (Chaplain)
•
Mrs Cathy Ellott, Pastoral Director of Sixth Form
•
Ms Dyer (Head of Middle School)
•
Any member of staff you choose
•
Your friends
•
A prefect
If you speak to a member of staff in private, we can’t promise that what you say will
remain confidential. We have no alternative but to pass on information if we feel
that it is your best interests to do so or if maintaining confidentiality compromises
your safety and welfare or that of others. If information does have to be passed
on to a third party, we will always inform you of our intention to do so. Medical
confidentiality with the school doctor is generally observed. However, the Health
Centre may pass on medical information to those they feel need to know.
