RoboBall
1. Summary in a long run on sentence:
a. So, basically, you have 2 robots vs. 2 robots and there’s 3 basketballs in the middle and
you have one minute to make the basketballs go to the other side and stay there
because if 2 or 3 basketballs are on your side when time runs out then your side loses.
2. Setup
a. At registration, each team will be paired randomly with another school’s team. This
pairing will be referred to as an alliance.
i. However, the coordinator reserves the right to have all the robots participate in
a pre-match distance race and use the results to create alliances.
b. Alliances will not be changed unless there are extenuating circumstances, which will be
determined by the coordinators and judges.
c. Alliances must be ready to play when they are called to the playing field. They may have
as little as 2 minutes to set up.
3. Match start
a. Judges/coordinators will place the 3 basketballs on the line in the middle.
b. Partnerships will start on opposite sides of the middle line.
c. Teams must start the match with their robots touching the wall and their remote
controls on top of their robot.
d. The student controlling the robot must keep their hands on their head and off the
controller until the judge/coordinator gives the signal to start the match.
4. Gameplay
a. Teams will have one minute to move the basketballs off of their side of the field.
b. Robots may not touch or cross the middle line.
i. Enforcement of this rule may include a warning, physically moving the robot
behind the line, physically removing the robot from the field, or disqualification.
It is up to the coordinators and judges.
c. A match will be called a tie if any basketballs are knocked out of the field.
i. Teams that purposely knock basketballs out of the field may have that counted
against their alliance. They will be warned once. After that, purposely knocking
a basketball out of the field will result in their alliance being knocked out of the
tournament.
d. The alliance with more than 1.5 basketballs on their side of the field when time is up is
the loser and is knocked out of the tournament. The winning alliance advances to the
next round.
i. If the judges/coordinators feel that exactly 1.5 basketballs were on each side of
the field when time ran out, they will declare a tie and restart the match quickly.
5. Champion
a. Winner is the last alliance left after all other alliances are knocked out.
b. Tiebreakers will be decided by a playoff if time permits. Otherwise, the tie will remain.
6. Teams
a. 2 students per team
b. 2 teams per school
