“I find it really interesting to know what people from
different cultural backgrounds believe .It makes me think
about why we behave in certain ways and why laws in other
countries are different to our own”
Why do we study Religion and Life?
This subject allows you to look at other people’s points of view and allows you to
evaluate and consider your own point of view. It also allows you to look at and
discuss modern day issues, and to evaluate various religious and non-religious
responses to these. The topics which will be covered are likely to include euthanasia,
abortion, divorce, sex before marriage, racism, gender and poverty. Pupils are
expected to think for themselves and be able to put forward reasoned opinions and
factual information about these topics, and their own and religious ideas about these
issues. It also allows you to gain an in-depth understanding about these issues and
different religions approaches to these.

How might this course be useful in my future?
In the future it is likely that you will work with people from many different cultures
with different beliefs and values. Having studied this course, you will be able to
consider and reflect upon different people’s opinions and to see how these may be
different to yours. You will be able to evaluate and make considered views on topical
issues; knowing that you are able to take into account different cultures, religions
and beliefs when discussing such issues, as well as developing transferable skills and
allowing you to use these to complement your learning.
Other subjects that go well with Religion and Life:
History and Geography both go well with Religion and Life; often these subjects study
overlapping issues.
Skills that will help me in this subject:
You need to be able to evaluate, consider different people’s opinions, be able to
clearly express your own views and give reasons for your opinion. You will need to be
able to develop your skills in writing to argue and to persuade. You will need to have
an open mind and objective outlook on the various issues covered.
