Message From The Principal
Hello Warhawks!
May has officially arrived! This time of the year is always busy for everyone involved with Westerville
Central High School! I can tell you that it is also a great time to be the Principal at Central. The entire Warhawk
community is busy preparing for a number of events, exams or activities. Our seniors are preparing for the next
chapter in their lives after graduation, but before that May 26th date arrives, they will first experience, final
exams, senior week (Cedar Point, prom, dodge-ball, picnic, senior last walk-thru in the commons), and evening
award ceremonies and concerts. It is very important that seniors understand that with privilege there comes
responsibility. All of us need to work together to make sure that good choices are made by all. Graduation is a
privilege and our hope is that all seniors are eligible to graduate and do not have to forfeit the ceremony
because of a poor choice or decision they made. With that being said, I have no doubt that our seniors will finish
the year like they started it……..with class!
In addition to the seniors and everything that they have to look forward to during the last month of
the school year, we also have exams, and other days that underclassman need to be aware of as well. Exams for
the 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will take place on May 22, 23 and 24. The exam schedule is enclosed in
this newsletter, and I encourage you to review the schedule as well as the form associated with our exam
schedule.
Every morning on the announcements, I remind all students in the building that the number one
reason they are here is to make sure they are focusing on their academic school work. This means taking
responsibility for their education. Every student should know how they are performing in class and should be on
top of any missing assignments. This is very crucial for our seniors, but really for every student in the building.
Before I close my letter, I want to remind all stakeholders that all of us at WCHS work hard to
provide our students the opportunity to achieve academic success, in a safe learning environment. All of you can
be proud of our students’ academic achievements and accomplishments, and I would list them here in the letter,
but there are far too many to mention. I know that if you browse our school website, and also look at the rest
of this newsletter, you will be able to read all about the strides our students are making in the academic arena in
and out of the building!
I hope that you are able to participate in many of the end of the year activities and that you will take a
minute to call me or send me an email if you have any questions or concerns!
Thank you for your constant support, and as always……….Go Warhawks!

This years prom will be held at on May 12 at The Grand Valley Dale
Ballroom in Columbus. For the safety and security of Westerville
Central High School students and guests, we require that our
students bringing a guest to a school-sponsored dance from another
school complete a Dance Guest Form. It is the responsibility of the
WCHS student to complete the form and return it no later than 3
days prior to the dance. They will not be delivered or faxed by the
office staff for any reason.
Dance policies per Mr. Spinner; upon arrival, all students and guests will
receive a wristband to be worn throughout the duration of the event. If
inappropriate dancing occurs, the student will surrender his/her
wristband which will serve as his/her warning. If a second incident of
inappropriate dancing occurs, they will be asked to leave. No
exceptions. The definition of inappropriate dancing is any or all dancing
that is found to be “sexually suggestive or dangerous in any way.
Examples of this include but are not limited to:
Bottom line, your guest = your responsibility. The form states
the expectations, regulations and dance policies. Including:

Any inappropriate or vulgar backside dancing (ankle/knee grabbing,
bending over, hands on the floor)

No guest will be admitted without the dance form on file

Inappropriate touching, fondling, or excessive displays of affection.

All are required to have photo identification.

On the floor or lap dancing.

Guests must be in high school and/or under age 21.

Violent “mosh pit” style dancing.
If there are any questions or concerns, please see Mr. Spinner.
Graduation Expectations
Commencement ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May
26, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Ohio Expo/Celeste Center.
Commencement practice is on Friday, May 25, 2012,
beginning promptly at 12:30 p.m. at the Ohio Expo/Celeste
Center. If students do not attend practice, they will not be
eligible to participate in the Commencement exercises.
Graduation is an exciting time for students and a cause for
celebration. The Graduation Ceremony is about the
Class of 2012, not any one individual. With that being
said, we need to remind our students and their families of
our expectations during the graduation ceremony.
Students must follow the dress code for the ceremony.
Both men and women will wear their graduation gown and
cap (tassel on the right side). No decorations on your cap
or gown. Only cords and stoles presented to students by
WCHS will be permitted. If students are not dressed
appropriately, they will not be allowed to participate in the
ceremony.
Students and parents are expected to act in a manner that
appropriately reflects that dignity of the ceremony. As
diplomas are presented, we ask the audience to please hold
all applause until we have called each name. Families and
friends are encouraged to silently stand in recognition of
their graduate. This will allow every family to hear their
graduate’s name called. The use of air horns, other noise
making devices and beach balls are strictly prohibited.
Parking will be $5 per vehicle. There is no limit on the
number of guests. However, all guests must be seated in the
appropriate areas. There is plenty of handicap seating, along
with a designated hearing impaired section.
If there is a friend or family member that is hearing
impaired please contact Mrs. Coppens at 797-6803.
Each student will be photographed receiving his/her
diploma, those photos will be available to purchase.
Students will be given their photography order form
from Life Touch, a WCS invoice (only applies to those
students with outstanding fee’s) and seat assignment at
graduation rehearsal. Be sure to check with your
graduate so you know which side of the audience to sit
on. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Please plan to arrive in
plenty of time to find a seat and plan to stay for the
duration of the ceremony. Late arrivals and early
departures are distracting.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the students will
participate in the recessional and exit to the side of the
building. Family and friends will exit from the front
entrances of the building and will meet their graduate in
the pavilion area.
Any inappropriate activity during the ceremony may result in
removal from the venue or police state trooper involvement.
In addition to that, the diploma will be held until the student
along with the parents/guardians come into the building at a
date to be determined and have a personal meeting with Mr.
Spinner.

Understanding College Acceptance Letters
Your acceptance letter will most likely contain some very important information about decisions and deadlines you need to pay close attention to.
Your acceptance letter could:

Tell you to expect your award letter shortly.

Ask you to choose a campus meal plan.

Advise you to reserve a room in a residence hall.

Ask you to think about what qualities you'd like in a roommate.
Read carefully. Ask questions. Talk to your parents or guidance counselor. Consult the school's website. If the letter directs you to respond on
anything from financial aid to roommate selection, note when your reply is expected.
MAKE SUMMER COUNT!
Just because the academic year is coming to an end doesn’t mean that learning has to come to an end, too. Summer is a great time to do extra
things away from school that will prepare you for next fall. Here are a few suggestions to help you make your summer count:

Use every opportunity to learn. Taking a family vacation? Spend time learning about the area you’ll visit, its history, and its demographics.
Painting your house? Learn about the chemistry of paint or calculate the amount of paint you’ll need to cover the desired square footage.

Read, read, read. Summer is a great time to read a book without a deadline. Immerse yourself in each one, researching the author and relevant history.

Take a virtual trip around the world in 80 days. Since summer break typically lasts about 80 days, map your own way around the globe by
studying different areas each week.

Seek out tutors. Talk with your teachers and school counselor for help locating individual coaching in areas you want to improve your
From the Cafeteria
The last day to accept checks for lunches will be May 4. Effective Monday, May 7, students may deposit into their meal accounts using cash, money
order, or through the on-line EZ Pay system.
It has been presented to the Board of Education to increase student meal prices for the 2012-2013 school year. There are two major reasons for
the increase: (1) mandates by USDA in section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (Public Law 111-296). This mandate requires
school district to evaluate their lunch prices on a yearly basis now. (2) The new nutritional guidelines requiring more fruits and vegetables, lower
sodium, etc., are also dictating larger portion sizes. In order to meet these new requirements, we must increase our lunch prices to maintain a
balanced budget. However, please understand that this is only tentative until we receive final board approval after May 7th.
Attendance Information
PAGE
8
ABSENCES MUST BE REPORTED TO THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE: When your student is absent, you must report the absence to the
Attendance Office. Please note, even if you speak with the teacher or other staff member you must report the absence directly the Attendance
Office. Please do not make the assumption that other members of the staff will forward your message to the Attendance Office. If you are
sending teachers or other staff members e-mails regarding your student's absence, please include the Attendance Office. In high school, the first
place an absence should be reported is the Attendance Office 797-6820
If your child has a chronic condition, you may submit a letter from the doctor, to the Attendance Office, stating the condition and that the
student may miss more than the usual number of days of school during the year. With this note on file, when a parent calls in, stating an
absence is due to the chronic condition, the letter will be used the same as if the student has been to the doctor and obtained a note. With this
letter on file, a trip to the doctor is not required to obtain a doctor's note each time the student is absent due to their chronic condition. A
new letter is required at the beginning of each school year.

WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
A concussion is a brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump or blow to the head. Even a "dinq," "getting your bell runq, " or what seems to be
a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. You can't see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury
or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the
symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION?
If your child has experienced a bump or blow to the head during a game or practice, look for any of the following signs and symptoms of a
concussion:
Signs Observed by Parents or Guardians
Symptoms Reported by Athlete

Appears dazed or stunned

Headache or "pressure" in head

Is confused about assignment or position

Nausea or vomiting

Forgets an instruction

Balance problems or dizziness

Is unsure of game, score, or opponent

Double or blurry vision

Moves clumsily

Sensitivity to light

Answers questions slowly

Sensitivity to noise

Loses consciousness (even briefly)

Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy

Shows behavior or personality changes

Concentration or memory problems

Can't recall events prior to hit or fall

Confusion

Can't recall events after hit or fall

Does not "feel right"
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD HAS A CONCUSSION?

Seek medical attention right away. A health care professional will be able to decide how serious the concussion is and when it is safe for your child to
return to sports.

Keep your child out of play. Concussions take time to heal. Don't let your child return to play until a health care professional says it's ok. Children who
return to play too soon-while the brain is still healing-risk a greater chance of having a second concussion. Second or later concussions can be very serious.
They can cause permanent brain damage, affecting your child for a lifetime.

Tell your child's coach about any recent concussion. Coaches should know if your child had a recent concussion in ANY sport. Your child's coach may
not know about a concussion your child received in another sport or activity unless you tell the coach.
ImPACT is a test that helps determine the athlete’s brain function. All athletes have the opportunity to get a baseline evaluation. The ImPACT testing, along with
a full clinical assessment, helps manage concussions. If you are interest in having the ImPACT testing done please see our athletic trainer, Kyle Sutton

CERAMICS!
The Ceramics 1 & 2 students will participate in a Raku firing May 7, 8 & 9 outside of Westerville Central High School. Students constructed a
soft slab bowl and will finish their pieces with a reduction firing technique known as Raku. Ceramic pieces are fired in an outdoor propane
kiln to 1800 degress, removed from the kiln and placed in metal trash cans filled with combustibles (sawdust, newspaper). Pots are left to
smoke in the bins for 45 minutes and then cooled with water. This process chemically changes the glaze into beautiful metallic hues.
CENTRAL’S CLAY TEAM!
Central's Clay Team competed in Feats of Clay, April 20th at Westland High School. Feats of Clay is an all day "Clay Olympics" where local high
school teams compete in clay competitions such as mug throwing, coil stacking, no-hands throw, and cylinder stacking. This years team
members are Meredith Bury, Hannah Cothern, Haley Conkel, Julia Borsukevich, Martha Borsukevich, Haley Kindall, Morgan Chudik, and
Cassidy Blais.
