EYE
PART
DEFINITION
Thick white outer layer of
tissue that makes up the outer
layer or envelope of the
eyeball. This protects the
delicate internal components
from damage.
Middle layer of the eyeball
envelope that contains blood
vessels and capillaries that
deliver nutrients and remove
waste from the eye.
The innermost layer of the
eyeball which contains the
receptors for vision. This is
essentially the screen that the
picture is projected on.
Receptors that are sensitive to
dim light. Distinguish bright
from shadow. Controls our
night vision.
Receptors that detect colour.
Sensitive to bright light.
The connective tissue that
carries info from the receptors
to the brain. Acts like a
modem line.
The gap in the retina where no
optic nerve exists. No rods or
cones here, so no picture is
produced.
A glassy, clear, jelly-like fluid
that fills the interior of the
eyeball. Gives the eyeball its
size and shape.
Tissue that rotates the eyeball
in its socket. Four strands of
muscle run horizontally. Two
others run around the eyeball.
EYE

visible eyeball. Regulates the
light entering the eye by

Acts like a camera shutter.
A hole in the iris where light
enters the eye.
Colourless transparent part of
the Sclera (white tissue). Allows
light to enter the eyeball.
Protects the iris and other
working parts. Bulging shape
helps to focus the light.
A double convex shape. Focuses
light on the retina.
A watery liquid between the
cornea and the lens that gives
this area its shape. It carries
nutrients to the lens and cornea.
The ridge of bone and hair that
protects the eye socket from
impact, sweat, etc. It also
provides some shade.
Hairs which keep airborne debris
out of the eye. Also provide
some shade.
Protective covering that keeps
the eye clean and moist. When
we blink, it acts like a windshield
wiper.
Organ above the eye that
