MUSI1307 Survey of Music Literature
Instructional Syllabus
I. BASIC COURSE INFORMATION:
A. Course Description: Three hours credit. Survey of the principal musical forms and cultural
periods as illustrated in the literature of major composers. Three lecture hours each week.
B. Intended Audience: This is a class for music majors and satisfies the requirement for three
hours in Creative Arts for music majors at selected universities. See advisor.

II. INTENDED STUDENT OUTCOMES:
A. Core Objectives Required for this Course
1. Critical Thinking: to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis,
evaluation and synthesis of information
2. Communication: to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas
through written, oral and visual communication
3. Teamwork: to include the ability to consider different points of view and to work
effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal
4. Social Responsibility: to include the ability to connect choices, actions and

1. Students will identify significant compositions from each musical time period

III.
ASSESSMENT MEASURES (items listed will be provided to instructors)
A. Assessments for the Core Objectives:
1. Critical Thinking: Students answer discussion question regarding tragic/dramatic
symphonies of Mozart and Beethoven. Introductory levels of critical thinking skills will be
assessed using a checklist reflecting the skills emphasized on the AC Critical Thinking Rubric.
2. Communication: Written, visual, and oral communication will be assessed through (a) a
short answer question about Beethoven and his 3 crises, (b) an oral/visual presentation and
(c) a library resources assignment. Communication skills will be introduced and formative
assessment will be completed using a checklist.
3. Teamwork: Students will work in groups of 3 or 4 to complete a critique on
Impressionism. Introductory teamwork skills will be assessed using a peer evaluation
checklist that measures how students work effectively as part of a group.
4. Social Responsibility: Social responsibility as it relates to music is introduced through
class activities. Formative assessment of social responsibility will be completed through the
use of embedded exam questions regarding choices and actions within the arts community .

B. Assessments for Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will identify listening examples on each unit exam.
2. Students will describe compositional forms through matching and short answer questions.
3. Students will complete 3 library assignments by using music research aids.
IV. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES: lecture, audio-visual presentations, film, field trips, group
breakout sessions
V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES:
A. Required Textbooks and Recommended Readings, Materials and Equipment
Listening to Music, 7th edition textbook by Craig Wright and music download cards.
B. Course Policies – This course conforms to the policies of Angelina College as stated
in the Angelina College Handbook.
1. Academic Assistance – If you have a disability (as cited in Section 504 of the

may affect your participation in this class, you should see Karen Bowser, Room 208 of the

2. Attendance – Attendance is required as per Angelina College Policy and will be recorded
every day. Any student with three (3) consecutive absences of four (4) cumulative
absences may be dropped from the class. Records will be turned in to the academic dean
at the end of the semester. Do not assume that non-attendance in class will always result
in an instructor drop. You must officially drop a class or risk receiving an F. This is
official Angelina College Policy.
Additional Policies Established by the Instructor - Fine Arts attendance requirement –
Students must attend the SFA field trips for harpsichord demonstration and orchestra
concert.

Assignments –5 unit worksheets, 4 reading quizzes, 5 quizzes, 5 listening assignments,
discussion grades, 3 library assignments, teamwork assignment & oral/visual presentation.
Course Outline – Units of study:
Unit 1: Introduction, orchestra, musical forms
Unit 2: Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque eras
Unit 3: Classical Era
Unit 4: Romantic Era
Unit 5: Modern Era
A schedule with due dates for assignments and quizzes will be attached.
VII.
EVALUATION AND GRADING: The instructor may modify the provisions of the syllabus to
meet individual class needs by informing the class in advance as to the changes being made.
A. Grading Criteria – list your grading criterion for assignments and quizzes
Unit Worksheets - successfully completed and turned in on time receive a 100;

10 points deducted if one class session late;
Other daily assignments graded on a scale of 1-100 points
Discussion questions are graded on a scale of 1- 25 points
Unit quizzes, Library assignments - graded on a scale of 1-100
B. Determination of Grade – List how the grades are averaged (percentage or total points,
etc.) All assignments and quizzes are weighted equally in the semester average. The
discussion questions are weighted at half the weight of the written assignments and quizzes.
The grades that are included in final average: 4 of 5 unit worksheets, 2 of 4 reading quizzes,
5 quizzes, 4 of 5 listening assignments, 8 discussion grades, 3 library assignments, teamwork
assignment & oral/visual presentation.
