ALCOHOL CLASS OBJECTIVES • Iden9fy 3 short term and 3 long term health risks • Define tolerance and discuss how it is related to alcohol • Discuss the consequences of using alcohol VOCABULARY • Tolerance – capacity to absorb a drug in large amounts without adverse effects WHAT IS ALCOHOL? • A drug contained in beverages/drinks like beer, wine, liquor • Absorbed through stomach & intes9nes bloodstream brain slows the body down • Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT CDC.GOV FACTS • Most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the US, more than tobacco and illicit drugs. • There are approximately 79,000 deaths a?ributable to excessive alcohol use each year in the United States. • This makes excessive alcohol use the 3rd leading lifestyle-‐related cause of death for the na9on. SMALL AMOUNTS One Drink… • Slows down ability to think clearly/make decisions • Causes people to feel more daring than usual and take risks ONE DRINK? Mixed Drinks? LARGE AMOUNTS Two or more drinks… • Slows down other areas of the brain and nervous system (could lead to death with large amounts in short amount of 9me) • Causes dizziness • Decreases coordina9on • Decreases reac9on 9me • Makes it harder to speak, walk, and stay awake • Loss of consciousness HERSHEY KISSES ACTIVITY • POINT TO MAKE: Motor coordina9on is affected by drinking. Simple tasks become very hard to do. SHORT TERM HEALTH EFFECTS • Behavior – violence, arguing, loud talking, foolishness, silliness, giggling • Brain – slowed CNS/Reac9ons • Hangover – Headache – Vomi9ng – Tiredness – Irritability – Nausea • Depressed Immune System • Interfere during puberty Your Liver & Alchol • Alcohol is processed by the liver • Your liver can handle processing 1 drink per hour. • Let’s see what this looks like… TENNIS BALL ACTIVITY • POINT TO MAKE: When you drink a lot, your liver becomes overloaded with alcohol. BINGE DRINKING & ALCOHOLISM • Binge Drinking – Consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short amount of 9me. – Bad for your health…liver...can lead to alcoholism • Alcoholism – Disease in which there is a physical and psychological dependence on alcohol – Can’t control themselves – NEED to drink – Become angry if not drinking – May be in denial LONG TERM HEALTH EFFECTS • • • • • Cirrhosis of the liver Cancer Loss of brain cells/nerve cells Ulcers Hepa99s – liver swells due to alcohol – Causes yellowing of skin/eyes/abdominal pain/fever – Leads to Cirrhosis (liver cell damage, liver failure, death) • Kidney Failure WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU? • Bodies are s9ll developing • Alcohol will affect your development and will affect it long term • A young person’s brain/body may be more sensi9ve to alcohol than an adult • Reputa9on (what will teachers, friends, parents, rela9ves think of you) • Legal issues (a record can impact your life!) – Must be 21 to consume/buy/possess alcohol Ice Cube Activity • POINT TO MAKE: Different people process alcohol at different rates. BAC • Blood alcohol concentra9on (how much alcohol is in your body) • A person’s reac9on to alcohol can be affected by age, gender, weight, physical condi9on, speed of consump9on, amt of food eaten • Everyone affected differently • Prescrip9on meds/meds can affect as well • A person with a BAC of 0.08 is considered intoxicated WHY DO KIDS DRINK? You could hurt yourself by falling and losing balance. SAY NO! • SITUATION: – You go over to your friends house on a Friday night. You think there is going to be a movie and popcorn but there is a party with beer and liquor. Your friends offer you a drink. – Write up a short dialogue and skit to show how you would say no to drinking alcohol.
