Operating Under A Charter Granted By Medinah Shriners, Chicagoland From the Desk of the President Wow; it's already July! This is one of the biggest parade months, especially the 4th with five parades in one day. So come on guys, and even gals; come join us at the parades. We do now have a new painted car that Frank Adler's shop painted with the Tampa skyline on it representing one of the home cities of the shrine hospitals. We did a lot of work on these cars the last few days. Dan Slomiany and crew helped and actually got graphics on three cars including the new one in record time. After the body was completed, I scrambled to get it mounted with the new side supports to help the body fit better and prevent damage to the sides. Next time when I have it it will be fitted with the new electrical wiring, a new ignition switch, headlights, and working brake lights. So for the Imperial Session we will Here I am; having a blast at Swedish Days have four very in Geneva nice looking cars! Unfortunately, I could not attend the session due to being slammed at work. Good luck to the guys that went and have fun! As for upcoming events, I must mention our Official Visit in August! It's on August 11 so come out and join us on the lake for a fun afternoon cruise. Also, we are having dinner at the Bohemian Crystal on September 18. More details to come on that. Hopefully, I will see you out at the parades! Fraternally Yours, President David Huffman June 2013 Issue Around the Corner Around the corner I have a friend, In this great city that has no end, Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it, a year is gone. And I never see my old friends face, For life is a swift and terrible race, He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell. And he rang mine but we were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men. Tired of playing a foolish game, Tired of trying to make a name. "Tomorrow" I say! "I will call on Jim Just to show that I'm thinking of him", But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, And distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner, yet miles away, "Here's a telegram sir," "Jim died today." And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the corner, a vanished friend. Once they see the smiles and applause from the crowd, you can bet it will be an experience they will want to repeat. I'm guessing our Potentate will agree that getting the prospect behind the wheel is a major part of the selling process. And observing the friendship and camaraderie of the Roaring ‘57s members should seal the deal. A Message from the 1st Vice President Well, here it is the end of June already. The weather seems to turning to hot and humid finally. So that means it is parade season. Parading is how the club raises money to maintain the cars and to donate to the hospital. Looking forward to the 4th of July parades. Looks like we have at least 5 of them. Ok; ‘57s “LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!” If we do build more cars we need to have drivers for them. The club needs to have new members coming in. We all need to recruit members for the club. You need to talk about the club to your blue lodge members and encourage them to come to a meeting and see what we are about. Without new members there is no reason to build new cars. Rolla Sullens 2nd Vice President A Message from the 3rd Vice President The club should work on getting all the present cars to look as sharp as the two cars that have been worked on. The two cars that have been completed are really sharp. I have seen pictures of the cars that have been just painted and they are really awesome. If we could get all the cars done this year, maybe villages will notice that we have some really cool cars and will want us in the parades. And with our new members enthusiasm we will be a group that people will look forward to having. First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who came out to Jimmy Buffett night at the Kane County Cougars. We had 42 in attendance and we had a terrific time. It was brought to my attention that some of our nobles are interested in attending a play at Pheasant run with the ladies. I’ll have more on that in the next issue. Do not forget about the Official Visit on August 11. The club is taking to the waters for a brunch cruise. If you have not signed up for it, please do so. It should be a great time. There will be transportation from the Shrine Center to Navy Pier for the cruise. I plan on staying at the Garden Hilton on Saturday night and taking the bus from the Shrine. The Hilton has a Shrine rate of $89.00. You can stay at the Hilton and have dinner in the Oasis on Saturday, then take the bus to Navy Pier. The hotel has a pool and hot tub. If any nobles have an idea for an outing they’d like the club to do, please send me the information (or the idea) and I will look into it for us. The Roaring ‘57s are parading all over town (and beyond). Please come out and join us. It is truly a great time. See me below in the Geneva parade. See you at a parade or two. Don’t forget that our next meeting is July 10. Chuck “The Cliutch” Graening 1st Vice President A Message from the 2nd Vice President YOUNG BLOOD NEEDED Let's see if we can devise a program to entice more young Nobles into our club. We badly need an infusion of young club members with strong backs and loads of youthful enthusiasm. Just a reminder that I order the food for our monthly meetings at Medinah. I place the order two weeks prior to the meeting date. Please call, text, or email me in advance if you plan to attend. I order for only 15 unless I know more are coming. I know the W.S.S.C. is extremely well represented at the Ceremonials. Maybe we could extend an invitation for new Shawn “Party Monster” Fizer 3rd Vice President Page 3 June 2013 __________________________________________________________________________________________ Beyond the Checked Flag News from Pit Road My Dear Nobles and Fellow Fez Heads and Supporters: June 1 was the Harvard Milk Days parade. We had six cars there driven by: Rolla Sullens, Hank Schrader, Jack Stevenson, John Kirkman, Chuck Graening, and me. If you look at the pictures below you will see that one of the above drivers really had fun at Harvard! A note sent to me on the Monday following the parade by Hank stated, “By the way, last weekend was one of the funnest parades.” Before I forget … a special thank you to Cal Tazelaar, who drove our escort car at Harvard. For Cal, Harvard it is a long, long drive. The most hectic but fun part of the parade season is almost upon us! The Roaring ‘57s will be in high demand starting the week of July 4th! I understand that we may have up to nine parades in four days! What a way to share our enthusiasm with our fans and help the kids at the same time. I’m hoping we have high participation by our members to spread some Shriner good cheer as we celebrate this 237th anniversary of the founding of this great nation! Frank Adler has one of the NEW car bodies in for paint. This will be the second car Frank has done for the club. A big thank you to Frank and his crew at Chicago Collision. Next up on our busy schedule are the July 4th Parades: I believe the West group is doing Elgin, Wheaton, and Glen Ellyn. The North Group (which I am part of) is participating in Vernon Hills, Skokie, and Morton Grove as we have the past few years. I assume we are at the Evergreen Park parade on July 3rd, and on the weekend will be at Bartlett and Crystal Lake! Whew, what a busy time! June 15 we did both the Genoa and Libertyville parades. We did both even though it was threatening Big Shot Hank atop a big wheel to rain. Dave Huffman did the Libertyville parade with Chuck Graening and Ray Bernard. I had John Kirkman, Rolla Sullens, Ed Kral, and Taco at Genoa. I just want to remind our members that no other club offers so much fun for so little cost. Your yearly membership of $20.00 allows you UNLIMITED use of the fabulous Roaring ‘57s during parade season, with no direct cost of ownership, maintenance, gasoline, or transport of the cars. NO OTHER CLUB OFFERS YOU THIS BENEFIT! Just get yourself to the parade, drive for free, and experience unlimited amounts of fun! Our Roaring ‘57 unit is the heart and soul of this club. June 22 was the Homer Glen parade. Paul Barber paraded with us and then invited us to his house for refreshments. I like the Libertyville Parade. It has the widest street for maneuvers and always a great crowd, but we could have used more attendees. Nonetheless, our crew made it happen in between the rainfalls and fun was had by all. On June 23, we were at Geneva for Swedish Days, a Medinah Parade. This was Frank Adler's first parade. From the continuing smile on his face, I’m guessing he had a grand time. Gentlemen, we need your participation to keep this parade unit the premier attraction in all these wonderful municipal parades that ultimately benefits the kids! Dan Slomiany worked over the weekend to put the ‘57 graphics on three more cars. Four cars with the new graphics will be ready for Indianapolis. The rig will leave for Indianapolis and the Imperial Parade on July 1 around noon. Anyone wishing to come with me should call and let me know. The Hawks have again brought home another Stanley Cup (two in four years)! Congratulations on a wonderfully entertaining season and a hard-fought championship! GO HAWKS!! When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase...'Goodnight , sleep tight.' It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them ‘Mind your pints and quarts and settle down.’ It's where we get the phrase ‘mind your P's and Q's.’ Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. ‘Wet your whistle’ is the phrase inspired by this practice.
