Utah’s First Capital
Fourth of July Celebration
MAYOR LARSEN’S
MESSAGE
I
love this time of year where we
celebrate the wonderful freedoms
we enjoy by living in this great country we call our home. As we enter
into the Fourth of July season, I
want to reflect on those who faithfully and courageously serve our
nation.
T
he Greatest Generation had a
strong unselfish desire to serve
and protect family, community, and
country. They gave their all to fight
the evil that threatened mankind in
the 2nd World War. There are many
stories of men willing to lie about
their age so they could join the battle. Our military people from that
time forward have had great examples and standards of service and
sacrifice that continue today so that
we can enjoy life in the greatest
country on earth. I am equally
thankful for our local law enforcement agencies, firefighters, doctors,
ambulance teams, and many others,
for their great protection and service
they provide so we can enjoy the
freedoms and quality of life that is
the promise of America. This promise is supported and guaranteed by
our Constitution and those who
serve to uphold that promise are
greatly admired and appreciated.
I
wish each of you a safe and enjoyable celebration of Independence Day.

Territorial Statehouse News
by Carl Aldrich
We have had a busy spring at
Territorial Statehouse State Park
and Museum! We were able to
get a compact shelving unit which will allow
us to store almost all of our artifacts not on
display in one location and in more appropriate
conditions.
Building Zion Youth Camp starts the first
weekend in June and you will see tents in the
park almost every weekend—-even some week
days.
This summer we are hosting The Way We
Worked, a traveling Smithsonian exhibit. It
will be in the multipurpose room at the library
July 15th through August 11th, then at the museum in the Legislative Hall August 15th
through September 9th. There will be a lot of
fun events at the library and the museum and a
local exhibit about work which will run
through December 2018.
We have a huge need for volunteers to help
with this exhibit. Please contact Carl Aldrich
([email protected] or 743-5316). Also see
our listings on justserve.org for this and other
volunteer opportunities.
THANKS to the city public works crew for
another successful spring clean up.
THANKS too for having the cemeter y in
great shape for Memorial Day.

READ! LEARN! GROW!
MUNICIPAL ELECTION
by Mayor Gene Larson
Here we are. We’ve survived eight years of the Obama
administration…..or have we?? Evidence is everywhere
that we have not come away unscathed. That administration apparently has succeeded in changing attitudes of a
significant number of Americans. We see families negatively affected, friendships severed, rioting, looting, destruction of private property, arrogance, condescension, and an extreme self-serving attitude
manifested in our society as a whole. Eight years of circumventing
the Constitution and throwing out the rule of law simply to achieve the
personal and selfish agenda of the Obama administration has changed
the way many Americans think. A perfectly legal and constitutional
Presidential election is now being attacked because it doesn’t align
with the agenda of the liberal media, politicians, and their followers.
One of the many reasons I have always loved living in Fillmore is
having the feeling of being buffered from the negative things that go
on around the nation. We live in a great country. Unfortunately,
many of these things mentioned above, to some degree, have made
their way into Fillmore, such as the rule of law coming under attack.
A good portion of my time and effort is spent dealing with citizens
who are willing to break state and city laws, or with people who want
city officials to “look the other way” so that laws of the land can be
ignored. It is important to understand that if city officials choose to
not uphold laws, Fillmore City could expose themselves to lawsuits
and other negative impacts. Along those same lines, elected officials
who vote in such a way that result in laws not being upheld could lose
their governmental immunity and create lawful exposures upon themselves as well.
We have an election coming up this November. Fillmore needs people to run for office who believe in the rule of law and are free of personal agendas or personal conflict of interests. As we have seen on a
national level, personal interests can be detrimental to the silent majority who place their trust in their elected officials to do right by them.
Elected officials are serving appropriately and fearlessly when they
represent that silent majority and not work solely for the special interest groups. I believe this coming election will be an important one to
help our community fight back against the self-serving mentality that
seems to be gradually making an increasing presence in society.
Please help by getting involved. Ask questions….and get out there
and vote.
Can’t Get to the Poles but you Still Want to Vote?
If you would like to receive your voting ballot by mail, please visit vote.utah.gov - or
- the Millard County Clerk's website link (under “Elections”) and file it with the Millard County Clerk office before Tuesday, August 8, 2017. If you have any questions
regarding absentee voting by mail, please call Kevin Orton at the city office.
Plenty is Happening in Fillmore this Summer
There are several major construction projects that have recently begun in Fillmore. The vast majority of these projects have been years in the making, and it just so happens that all of them are coming
together at the same time….this summer! Normally the city would try to space out several large
projects so they don’t all happen at the same time; however, a good portion of funding for these projects depends on grant money availability as well as donations from other entities. Seasonal weather
conditions also play a major role in when construction projects take place.
East Center Street Flood Mitigation Project
This project started the first of May and is projected to be finished by July. The areas affected are
East Center Street beginning at 100 East to 200 East.
Culinary Water System Upgrade Project
Started in May and is projected to be finished by late fall. The area affected is Canyon Road (200
South).
During the construction of the Culinary Upgrade project, there will be a few brief periods where
culinary water will be out of service for a short period of time. The contractor will make sure that
these outages are as brief as possible, and that water will be turned back on by 5:00 p.m. on any
day where there is an interruption in service. Any water outages lasting beyond 5:00 p.m. should
be reported to the city.
Electric Creamery Substation Re-build Project
The Creamery Substation was struck by lighting last summer and is currently being re-built. The
substation is located at 50 East 100 North right behind NAPA Auto Parts.
Fillmore City Cemetery Expansion
Our beautiful cemetery is currently under expansion adding a new section on the north. Projected to
be completed early fall.
Main Street Re-paving Project
Starting the first of June all of Main Street from the south to the north Interstate exits will see a
much needed new look. In conjunction with the Main Street re-paving project a storm drain pipe
will be installed beneath Main Street that will eliminate the water build-up in front of Duane’s
Foodtown as well as other parts of Main Street where flooding has been a problem. The storm drain
will also be beneficial in that proper drainage of storm water to preserve and lengthen the life of the
new Main Street pavement.
Fillmore Municipal Airport Apron
The Airport will be improved by re-paving the apron area
where planes park, refuel, and taxi to and from the runway. The completion of this project is a joint effort between the city and the Bureau of Land Management. The
apron had become dilapidated such that the BLM would
no longer land their planes at the airport. With the improvements, the much needed BLM fire-fighting operations will resume out of the Fillmore Municipal Airport.
Projected to be completed by July.
