Centering is very important
problems : splashes, waves, oxidation,
low productivity/slow process
– Uphill casting
• More preparation steps
• Higher produktivity
• Higher quality.
Downhill Casting
+ Cheeper
– Splashes and waves results in
surface defects.
– Lower steel quality.
– Low casting rate.
– High mould wear.
Uphill Casting
+ Better surface quality due to use of
casting powder.
+ Better steel quality-less inclusions.
+ Higher casting rate, simultaneous
casting of many ingots.
– Extra material use.
– Extra working steps : stool prep,
cleaning of sprues and inlets.
