Fun Facts about Christmas
Christmas became a national holiday in America
on June 26, 1870, Alabama was the first state in
1836
 During Christmas buying season, Visa cards alone
are charged on average 5,340 per minute.
 Electric Christmas lights were first used in 1895
 The first American Christmas carol was written
in 1649 by a minister named John De Brebeur
and it was “Jesus is born”
 A wreath with holly, red berries, and adorations
began at least 17th century. Holly, with sharp
pointed leaves symbolized the thorns in Christ’s
crown, Red berries as the blood, and the wreath
itself signified a home that celebrated the birth of
Christ our Lord
 Jingle Bells was first written for Thanksgiving
then eventually became a famous Christmas song!
 Rudolph, “the most famous reindeer of all”, was
Robert May’s idea to get more shoppers into
Montgomery Wards!!!
 The first eggnog consumed was in Captain John
Smith’s Jamestown settlement in 1607. I wonder
if he shared with Pocahontas?
 The Salvation Army has been sending out their
bucket troops since the 1890’s
 The Rockefeller Tree has been put up since 1931


alcohol service after the midnight hour. In that case,
we are declining to do a New Year’s Eve party this
