SCORE __________
Model the relationship between the volume of a rectangular prism and a rectangular pyramid having both congruent bases
and heights and connect that relationship to the formulas.
Multi-Step Example
Oliver used blocks to build a rectangular prism measuring 6 inches by 5 inches by 11 inches. Brett
built a rectangular pyramid with the same height as Oliver’s figure. If the bases are congruent, how
many times greater is the volume of Oliver’s figure?
6 • 5 • 11 = 330 cubic inches
!
!
• 6 • 5 • 11 = 110 cubic inches
Determine the volume of Oliver’s prism.
Determine the volume of Brett’s pyramid.
Divide to find the ratio of the volumes: 330 ÷ 110 = 3.
So, the volume of Oliver’s prism is 3 times greater than the volume of Brett’s pyramid.
1 Anne wants to have an ice sculpture at her wedding
reception. She would like to have a rectangular
pyramid on top of a rectangular prism. She wants each
