An Update in ELA & Reading: Mrs. Ally Jones Friday, November 4, 2016 - Qtr 2 Week 1 IMPORTANT DATES Mrs. Jones’ Return Last week, I was absent, and returned to school on Monday. On Tuesday, I presented a slideshow of various photos from my trip. Nov. 8 - Election Day, Vote in the Old Gym I had found some rock formations made of Nov. 10 - Parent/Teacher Conferences clay, gravel, and mud, mixed with various Nov. 11 - Veteran’s Day grasses and plants. This rock was formed by Nov. 14-18 - Missoula Children’s Theatre Practice run-off from the mountains into the creek. Nov. 15 - Winter Sports Parent Meeting 6pm The materials rolled together in to Nov. 17 - Varsity Boys/Girls Basketball begins different sized balls after a massive flood hit Nov. 19 - Missoula Children’s Theatre Production the breaks. Nov. 23 - Release @ 3:36 pm; Thanksgiving Break The students enjoyed brainstorming different ways these rocks were formed, and wrote in journals their ideas of how they were formed. I received very interesting ideas, but my favorite was “Bigfoot got really bored one day and made clay balls”. The students then discussed in class how the water run-off was so strong it forced the clay, mud, gravel, and grasses down the hillside causing a snow ball effect. I enjoyed sharing my trip with the students, and they learned some survival tips and the importance of preparing for extreme weather. Quite a bit different than your average school day, but it was a great learning experience for all. ANNOUNCEMENTS • November 4: Students grades 4-8 participated in the “CinemaDrive Presentantions”. Mrs. Lyders made it possible for a Cinema Drive to come to our school for free to show students real live situations of when you are distracted behind the wheel. The students wore glasses that made each scenario come to life as if they were driving. Scenarios varied from traffic accidents, texting and driving, and drinking and driving. Students enjoyed it, and overall, received the message of the importance of safe driving. Different age groups received different presentations, depending on the content. • The ELA Expo is CJI’s second quarter community fair. Students K-12 will present various forms of English Language arts skills based on reading and writing. More information to come soon.
