All prospective St. Wenceslaus families are welcome to come to our preschool and kindergarten Open House on Sunday, January 29th from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM. Classrooms will be open to visit and teachers and administrators will be here to answer any questions you may have regarding registering your incoming preschooler or kindergartener. We hope to see you then! This Jesus Challenges Me, Song/prayer of Padre Zezinho, SCJ. “I am furious, and He tells me Forgive! I am afraid, and He tells me Take courage! I have doubts, and He says to me Have confidence! I feel restless, and He says to me Be calm! I prefer to go my own way, and He says Come and follow Me! I make my own plans, and He says to me Forget about them! I aim towards material goods, and He says Leave them behind! I want security, and He says I Promise you absolutely nothing! I like to live my own life, and He says Lose your life! I believe I am good, and He tells me Good is not sufficient! I like to be the boss, and He says Serve! I like to command others, and He says Obey! I like to understand, and He says Believe! I like clarity, and He speaks in Parables. I like poetry, and He speaks to me in Realities. I like my tranquillity, and He likes me to be Disturbed. I like violence, and He says Peace be with you! I draw sword, and He says Put that away! I think of revenge, and He says Offer the other cheek! I speak of order, and He says I have come to bring the sword! I choose hatred, and He says Love your enemies! I try to sow harmony, and He says I have come to cast fire upon the earth! I like to be the greatest, and He says Learn to be as small as a child! I like to remain hidden, and He says Let your light shine! I look at the best place, and He says Sit in the last bench! I like to be noticed, and He says Pray in your room behind locked doors. NO.... I don't understand this Jesus. He provokes me. He confuses me. Like so many of His disciples, I too, would like to follow another Master who would be more certain and less demanding. But I experienced almost the same as Peter: "I do not know of anyone else WHO HAS THE WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE!" St. Wenceslaus has started a CANCER SUPPORT GROUP! We will meet the THIRD Wednesday of the month from 4:00-5:30 PM. The facilitators are two nurses, Mary Eileen Andreasen and Bev Vazzano. This is guaranteed to be a loving, supportive, light-hearted group. Join us or let someone with cancer know about this group! All are welcome. The burden is lighter when we share the journey together. Questions, call Mary Eileen at 402-991-3425. Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. And give us peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen. . 1 Please attend the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast TODAY supporting Pro-Life activities of our Council including Bethlehem House and Essential Pregnancy Services. These services provide needed assistance for young women and men faced with decisions. Pregnancy can be difficult, confusing and lonely. These organizations are there to help them find the information needed to make the right choice. Your freewill donation will go to support this important work of charity in our community. We are a very fortunate parish so please support those who have not been blessed with as many resources. Enjoy parish fellowship with famous K of C pancakes, eggs and sausage breakfast with a special topping for the kids pancakes. Drinks are included and we will be serving from 8:00 AM till noon. We are a very blessed parish and by attending and contributing you will be supporting our greater community. God Bless. ST. WENCESLAUS OMAHA, NEBRASKA Friends, I made a mistake in last week’s bulletin — it is TODAY that the Knights of Columbus have their pancake breakfast to support pro-life activities at the parish. Thank you for the support you give to the Knights; they do excellent service, and many works of Charity. We are beginning Catholic Schools Week here at St. Wenceslaus. St. Pat’s in Elkhorn, St. Stephen the Martyr, St. Vincent de Paul and ourselves are all about the same size — roughly 850 children each; and yet I think we provide an excellent preparation for high school and beyond, as well as truly trying to infuse in the children’s lives a sense of the wonder and awe of being a child of God. Celebrate the Good News that is happening in our parish, as well as our school. I leave at 0-dark-thirty on Tuesday for the Holy Land. I am traveling with 48 other pilgrims — most from this parish — to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and to experience the grace of the Holy Land. I will be posting daily at www.facebook.com/frtomb; this is my Facebook page and will have pictures as well as reflections. Jerusalem is 7 hours ahead of us, so keep track of what your fellow parishioners are experiencing, as well as keep all of us in prayer. I promise I will do the same. One of the first Masses I will be celebrating is at the monastery of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel; this is the home of the brown scapula. I will purchasing a few, but if you want me to pick you one up, text me your name at 402-661-0817. God bless. Fr. He chose disciples who were dense, who fought with each other, who jockeyed for leadership, who asked stupid questions and who ran away while he hung dying. They had no experience in public speaking, anger management, catechesis, team building or chairing committees. And yet the church survived. One of the proofs that Christianity is divinely inspired is that many of our founders did not know what they were doing. Still the faith spread far and wide. As we hear in this Sunday’s second reading, St. Paul told the Corinthians that God chose “the foolish of the world to shame the wise,” “the weak … to shame the strong,” “those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something.” He was not talking about the apostles. He was talking about the Corinthians. God chose them, even though they were not the best, so that people would not trust in their own strengths, but would trust in God. Time after time, God calls people no matter how limited their gifts are. All around us are people God has chosen for ministry. They may not be the best at what they do, but they do it because God wants it done. God does not always choose the best, but God chooses people anyway. God wants you for something too. Have you ever said no because you thought you could not do it? Might it be that God will do it, once you say yes? Written by Paul Turner. WENCESLAUS LITURGY CORNER Second Reading during Ordinary Time! During Cycle A’s Ordinary Time, the second reading is taken from various epistles (letters): 1 Corinthians, Romans, Philippians and 1 Thessalonians. Since these readings are assigned in a semi-continuous way (some verses are omitted), we shouldn’t expect that they will exactly correspond to the Gospel as they do during special seasons of the church year. However, since the point of Ordinary Time is to walk with Jesus to Jerusalem and find out the meaning of discipleship, the second readings help us to know (in a generic way) what living the Gospel actually means. They often spell out Christian behaviors that we should strive for or warn us against what we should avoid. Although the second readings aren’t the focus of our attention and preaching on any given Sunday in Ordinary Time, they are not unimportant. They are still God’s word addressed to us today! Those who have ears ought to hear! Congratulations to the following young men who earned honor at Creighton Prep: Edward Gordon, Tyler Houlton, Andrew Hubner, Alex King, Nicholas Shotkoski, Benjamin Steinauer, Benjamin Bianchi, Jonathan Fosheim, Kyle Fuxa, Paul Gordon, Jordan Lofgren, Aaron Masek, Luke Miller, Spencer Moes, Connell Monaghan, Brian O’Flanagan, Matthew Schembari, Cameron Tran, Matthew Anderson, Jinyong (Kevin) Hong, Matthew Linehan, Michael O’Donnell, Charles Steier, Matthew Tiojanco, Gabriel Van Dyke, Michael Fosheim, Thomas Franco, Mitchell Gordon, John Pedersen Mark Pedersen, Paul Wynegar, Jacob Betsworth, Alexander Bortolotti, Matthew Boulay, Joseph Brandl, Arthur Egan, Ethan Hammond, Scott Huber, Benjamin Johnson, Colin Keller, Ryan Melanson, Liam O’Donnell, Nicholas Swerczek, Matthew Thiele, Cooper Allen, Raymond Cronin, Baily McFadden, Isaiah Mueller, William Steinauer, Joshua Weindel, Anthony Wynegar, Jackson Abt, Henry Dunham, Patrick Faur, Jackson Hasz, George Hubner, John Barrett, Joseph Boulay, Miles Hay, Peter Kinney and Keanu Landolt. WENCESLAUS HUMAN NEEDS NICHE January’s Charity of the Month Educate Uganda: You can change a life with $35! In February 2017 the Ugandan school year will begin. Many orphans are still waiting for an opportunity to attend school and pray that a sponsor will help them. If you want to help sponsor a little girl’s or boy’s school fees, now is a great time! $35/year will pay a child’s school fees, provide them with a meal at school and also provide them with a school uniform. When children in Uganda stay in primary school, the likelihood of contracting AIDS is reduced, as are early marriages. The education they receive will also provide important skills that will help lift them out of a life of poverty. If you are interested in supporting a child’s school fees, please visit www.educateuganda.org or contact Karen at [email protected]. “The best and most beautiful things in this world cannot be seen or even heard, but must be felt with the heart.” Helen Keller When you sponsor a child, you give them the most beautiful gift and even though you may never meet them, they will surely feel your love in their hearts. Our community thanks you and appreciates you! The Human Needs Committee OMAHA, NEBRASKA The next Used Uniform Sale will be Monday, January 30th. 7:00 to 9:00 am & 2:30 to 6:30 pm.
