Grade 5 Volume of Rectangular Prisms and Capacity

TIPS4Math
Grade 5
Volume of Rectangular Prisms and Capacity
Overall Expectations
Students will:
• Determine the relationships among units and measurable attributes, including the area of a rectangle and the volume of a
rectangular prism (5m32)
• Demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding of the use of variables in equations (5m62)
Specific Expectations
Students will:
• Determine, through investigation, the relationship between capacity (i.e., the amount a container can hold) and volume (i.e., the
amount of space taken up by an object), by comparing the volume of an object with the amount of liquid it can contain or displace
(5m43)
• Determine, through investigation using stacked congruent rectangular layers of concrete materials, the relationship between the
height, the area of the base, and the volume of a rectangular prism, and generalize to develop the formula (i.e., Volume = area of
base x height) (5m44)
• Demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding of variables as unknown quantities represented by a letter or other symbol
(5m69)
• Determine the missing number in equations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division and one- or two-digit
numbers, using a variety of tools and strategies (5m70)
Lesson
Relationships in
Rectangular Prisms
Learning Focus
•
Investigate the relationship of the area of the base, the height of a rectangular
prism and its volume using stacked congruent layers of concrete materials
• Generalize the relationship to a formula
Volume of Rectangular
• Use the relationship and formula to solve for the volume of a rectangular prism
Prisms
given either the base area and height or the length, width and height
• Demonstrate, through investigation, an understanding of variables as changing
quantities, given equations with letters or symbols
• Determine the missing number in equations
• Solve for the height if the base area and volume are known
• Suggest different dimensions that result in rectangular prisms with the same
volume
Capacity and Volume
• Through investigation, determine the relationship between capacity and volume
• Identify and work with the knowledge that 1 cubic centimetre has a capacity of
1 millilitre
