One student qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. The student is Joseph Edelmann. Twelve students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. A letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented at graduation to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). It is with great pleasure that I inform you that the 2008-2009 Ocean Township High School Sandpiper Yearbook staff, under the direction of Julie Shernius and Frank Mastellone, was awarded both a First Place Award and an Outstanding Sports Coverage Award by the American Scholastic Press Association. Congratulations to the Sandpiper Yearbook staff on this outstanding accomplishment! The Lincoln Fellowship has chosen Alycia R. Grant, OTHS, as the winner of their 2009 “What the Gettysburg Address Means to Me” essay contest. As a winner of the contest Alycia won a $300.00 cash prize, a Gettysburg family vacation package for her family and an additional $300.00 for Ocean Township High School’s Social Studies Department. Alycia and her family will be the guests of the Lincoln Fellowship at their annual luncheon on November 19, 2009, where she will present her essay and receive her prizes. Congratulations to Alycia, her parents and teachers! Laurence Gindi, a freshman majoring in Environmental Science and Policy, has been awarded The Siegfried Weisberger Jr. Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to academically gifted students who are enrolled in the college of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland. This agreement will provide a combination of nineteen job-embedded professional development sessions and ten Family Math Night workshops for the 2009-2010 school year. These activities are to support our grant implementation goals. The total cost is $27,200 of which $24,500 is being funded under the 2009-2010 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) grant and the remaining balance of $2,700 funded by current local funds. Approval was given to Mr. Adam Voehl for an unpaid internship in the business office under the supervision of the School Business Administrator. The schedule will be Tuesday through Thursday, a maximum of 4 hours per day, to begin October 13, 2009. Approval was given to Jenna Gilman, Instructional Assistant, High School to receive additional hours and payment of overtime at one and one half her daily rate, in excess of 40 hours; during the 2009 Field Hockey Season. Ms. Gilman will shadow a special education high school student/field hockey player after school and on weekends, in accordance with the field hockey program regular game/tournament schedule. The cost of the club is $9,238.00 ($8,988.00 salaries and $250.00 for supplies) for the year. Staff will be paid the contractual rate of $28.00 per hour and work 1.5 hours per day, approximately four days per week. This club is being funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) Title I Part A grant, details of the club. Approval was given for winter coaching assignments for the 2009-2010 school year in accordance with the list dated September 25, 2009. Approval was given to Cipriano Apicelli as the Head Baseball Coach for the 2010 spring season in accordance with the memorandum dated September 29, 2009. Approval was given for Assistant Girls Basketball Coaching positions for both the Freshman and JV Levels for the 2009-2010 school year in accordance with the memorandums (2) dated October 2, 2009.
