At the Public Meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 the Township of Ocean Board of
Education took the following action:

Mr. Pagano made the following announcements:
We would to thank Avaya for their generous donation of office furniture and file cabinets to
be used throughout our district. Tonight, we are pleased to have in attendance Avaya

We would like to recognize the following students for their efforts to improve the
environment of a neighboring elementary school; Bangs Avenue Elementary, Asbury Park.
The students painted colorful murals of “the beach,” “under the sea scenes,” “sports actions
figures,” “a tropical garden,” and “building blocks,” throughout the elementary school. Their
efforts have lifted the spirits of students, teachers and parents.

Congratulations to the following students who have been designated AP Scholars by the
College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level AP
examinations. The majority of these students are 2009 graduates.
One student qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or
higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more
of these exams. The student is Joseph Edelmann.
Twelve students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average
grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these
exams. These students are: Joseph Edelmann, Jerome-Alan Japitana, Sinan Khor,
Madelyn Mauterer, Sean Moran, Nadav Nahumi, Lucas Rhoads, Ryan Singer, Naomi
Stanway, Samantha Teng, Maria Tirone, and Jiwu Zheng.
Twelve students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade
of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these
exams. These students are: Christopher Bekampis, Eric Boden, David Du, Varum
Ganesan, Ivy Hollander, Tomer Langberg, Kyle Molloy, Catherine Plotts, Avneesh
Sarwate, Mary Walsh, Smriti Xavier, and Vincent Zheng.
Twenty-three students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP
Examinations, with grades of 3 or higher. The students are: Alexandra Agostini, Daniel
Bouniaev, Kellie Brockel, Michael Brown, Laura Cunningham, Jaclyn D’Esposito,
Dorea DiMaggio, Adam Gross, Jonathan Healy, Connor Hoffman, Sean Hovendon,
Michael Isaacson, Marlena Klein, Garrett Krzyzanowski, Diane Pappayliou, Joshua
Reppen, Kevin Rippon, Joshua Rosenheck, Victoria Schroeter, Amy Soltes, Rachel
Stine, Katelyn Zimmerman, and Lauren Zupkus.

Ocean Township High School proudly announces that six of their students, Alexandra
Agostini, Ashley Baldanza, George DeCastro, David Lee, Victoria Schroeter, and Jessica
Wang have been named Commended Students in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship
Program. A letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation
(NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented at graduation to these scholastically
talented seniors.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their
exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2010 competition for
Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more
than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Congratulations to the students, their parents and teachers!
It is with great pleasure that I inform you that the 2008-2009 Ocean Township High School
Sandpiper Yearbook staff, under the direction of Julie Shernius and Frank Mastellone, was
awarded both a First Place Award and an Outstanding Sports Coverage Award by the
American Scholastic Press Association.
Congratulations to the Sandpiper Yearbook staff on this outstanding accomplishment!
The Lincoln Fellowship has chosen Alycia R. Grant, OTHS, as the winner of their 2009
“What the Gettysburg Address Means to Me” essay contest. As a winner of the contest
Alycia won a $300.00 cash prize, a Gettysburg family vacation package for her family and an
additional $300.00 for Ocean Township High School’s Social Studies Department. Alycia
and her family will be the guests of the Lincoln Fellowship at their annual luncheon on
November 19, 2009, where she will present her essay and receive her prizes.
Congratulations to Alycia, her parents and teachers!
Laurence Gindi, a freshman majoring in Environmental Science and Policy, has been
awarded The Siegfried Weisberger Jr. Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to
academically gifted students who are enrolled in the college of Agriculture and Natural
Resources at the University of Maryland.
Congratulations to Laurence on this outstanding achievement!

Approval was given for the use of the pool facility at the JCC of Monmouth County for
swim practices and swim meets for the 2009-2010 season for a total cost of $14,701.83.
Approval was given for part-time nursing services for 2009-2010 at Ocean Township
High School provided through Monmouth-Ocean Education Services Commission at a
rate of $54.50 per hour for a maximum of 17.5 hours per week.
Approval was given for an agreement between the Township of Ocean School District and
Rutgers University’s Center for Mathematics, Science and Computer Education. This
agreement will provide a combination of nineteen job-embedded professional
development sessions and ten Family Math Night workshops for the 2009-2010 school
year. These activities are to support our grant implementation goals. The total cost is
$27,200 of which $24,500 is being funded under the 2009-2010 No Child Left Behind
(NCLB) grant and the remaining balance of $2,700 funded by current local funds.
Approval was given to Mr. Adam Voehl for an unpaid internship in the business office
under the supervision of the School Business Administrator. The schedule will be Tuesday
through Thursday, a maximum of 4 hours per day, to begin October 13, 2009. A criminal
history check will be performed and the intern will not work with confidential information.
Approval was given for the state contract purchase from Dell Computers Inc., state contract
#A81247 and WSCA contract # 70256 for a total of $106,567.41 as follows:

Approval was given for the Five Year Comprehensive Maintenance Plan 2009-2010
through 2013-2014 as per N.J.A.C. 6:24 and the annual maintenance budget amount (M-1)
per N.J.A.C. 6:26-12.1.
Approval was given for an amendment of Fiscal Year 2009 for the IDEA Basic grant to
reflect a carry-over amount of $2,648.00 of Non-Public funds.
2. INSTRUCTION, EDUCATION, & TECHNOLOGY – Mrs. Finch
Approval was given for the memorandum dated October 19, 2009 re: Staff Professional
Development Activities in accordance with District Policy 6471 and NJAC 6A:23B. The
attendance at said activities is fiscally prudent and will promote the delivery of instruction
and/or will further the efficient operation of the district.
Reimbursement for travel and related expenses shall be according to the Department of
the Treasury guidelines in NJOMB circular 06-02 and A-87.
Approval was given in accordance with District Policy 6471 for the following Board
Members to attend the NJSBA Workshop, October 28-29, 2009: Janet Surmonte and
register in the following classes: Lesley Dorsett, Governance I; Angela Finch and Cheri
Roebuck, Governance II; Denise Parlamas and Anne Marie Sparaco, Advanced
Training/Legal Update; at a group rate of $1,100.00 for the workshops.
Reimbursement for travel and related expenses shall be according to the Department of the
Treasury guidelines in NJOMB circular 06-02 and NJOMB A-87.
Approval was given in accordance with District Policy 6471 for the following Board
Member to attend the NJSBA Workshop, November 14, 2009 and register in the following

Approval was given for 26 students from Kean University to observe Physical Education
classes at the Wayside School on October 16 and November 20, 2009. Ms. Janet Prentice,
along with a Kean University instructor, will be hosting the class.

Valerie Sorce, a student from Monmouth University, to observe 6-8 weeks in Joanne
DeVito’s class at the Intermediate School beginning September 2009.
Amy Smuro, a graduate student from Rider University, to observe 5 days in Joe Lang’s

Michael Dyer, a student from Kean University, to observe 20 hours of Physical
Education with Crystal Jahn at Wayside Elementary School beginning September 2009.
Gilbert J. Unger, a psychology student at Brookdale Community College, to observe one
day during the month of October in Mr. Buerck’s Physical Education class at Ocean
Township Elementary School beginning October 14, 2009.
Marissa St. Louis, a student from Monmouth University, to observe twenty (20) hours in
Jeff Leute’s Art class at the High School beginning October 19, 2009.
Alexandra Kurpeil, an education major in her senior year at Widener University, to
observe Mrs. English’s Gifted and Talented class at the Intermediate School. The
observation is scheduled for October 26, 2009.
Approval was given to Colleen Petty, Health & Physical Education teacher at the Ocean
Township Intermediate School, to complete an administrative internship during the
period of October 1, 2009 through January 31, 2010. Ms. Petty is a graduate student in
the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Scranton. Mr. Victor
Milano, Assistant Principal, will serve as the internship supervisor.
Approval was given to Brenda Sofield, a graduate student at Monmouth University, to
complete 30 hours of internship in the LDTC program for the 2009 Fall semester; October
7, 2009 through December 16, 2009 and 90 hours next semester beginning January 2010.
June Zarra will serve as her mentor.
Approval was given for an addendums to out of district private tuition for the 2009-2010
school year in accordance with the memorandums (2) dated September 21 & 24, 2009.

Approval was given for an unpaid family leave of absence for Michelle Rogers, Special
Education Teacher, Ocean Township High School, beginning September 29, 2009 and
continuing for a period of twelve weeks. Mrs. Roger’s last day of work will be September
23, 2009. Mrs. Rogers is expected to return to her classroom on December 21, 2009.
While out on an unpaid family leave of absence, Mrs. Rogers will be responsible for
paying the 10% cost of her health insurance coverage.
Approval was given for a revision to an unpaid family leave of absence for Julie
Alexander, Social Studies Teacher, Intermediate School, beginning January 11, 2010
(instead of December 11, 2009) and continuing for a period of twelve weeks. Mrs.
Alexander’s last day of work will be November 25, 2009. Mrs. Alexander is expected to
return to her classroom on April 12, 2010.
Approval was given for a revision to an unpaid family leave of absence for Allison
Denton, Social Studies Teacher, High School, beginning at the conclusion of her eligible
sick leave and continuing through to May 16, 2010. Mrs. Denton’s last day of work will
be October 30, 2009 (instead of November 13, 2009). Mrs. Denton is expected to return
to her classroom on May 17, 2010 (instead of April 19, 2010). While out on an unpaid
family leave of absence, Mrs. Denton will be responsible for paying the 10% cost of her
health insurance coverage.
Approval was given for an unpaid family leave of absence for Wendy Acevedo, Fifth
Grade Teacher, Township of Ocean Intermediate School, beginning February 16, 2010
and continuing for a period of twelve (12) weeks. Mrs. Acevedo’s last day of work will
be December 11, 2009. She is expected to return to her classroom on May 19, 2010.
While out on an unpaid family leave of absence, Mrs. Acevedo will be responsible for
paying the 10% cost of her health insurance coverage.
Approval was given a previous request for an unpaid family leave of absence for Tara
Michaels, Instructional Assistant, Intermediate School, beginning October 7, 2009 and
continuing for a period of twelve weeks, be changed to an unpaid leave of absence; dates
to remain the same. Ms. Michaels is expected to return to work January 4, 2010. While
out on an unpaid family leave of absence, Mrs. Michaels will be responsible for paying the
10% cost of her health insurance coverage.
Approval was given to Mrs. Marleigh Velba and Ms. Megan Grace to teach at the After
School Help and Homework Center, Wayside School for the 2009-2010 school year. Mrs.
Velba and Ms. Grace will each work Monday through Thursday, 1 ½ hours per day,
$28.00 per hour.
Approval was given to Ms. Denise Day, Ms. Amanda Pfeiffer, Ms. Blair Herman and Ms.
Suzan Cole as substitute teachers for the 2009-2010 After School Help and Homework
Center, Wayside School. Ms. Day, Ms. Pfeiffer, Ms. Herman and Ms. Cole would work if
one of the regular teachers were unavailable, (1 ½ hours per day of coverage, $28.00 per
hour).
Approval was given to Mrs. Sandra Kelley and Mr. Joseph Lang to teach at the After
School Help and Homework Center, Ocean Township Elementary School for the 20092010 school year. Mrs. Kelley and Mr. Lang will work Monday through Thursday, 1 ½
hours per day, $28.00 per hour.
Approval was given to Mr. Richard Steckhahn, as a substitute teacher for the 2009-2010
After School Help and Homework Center, Ocean Township Elementary School. Mr.
Steckhahn would work if one of the regular teachers were unavailable, (1 ½ hours per day
of coverage, $28.00 per hour).
Approval was given to Jenna Gilman, Instructional Assistant, High School to receive
additional hours and payment of overtime at one and one half her daily rate, in excess of
40 hours; during the 2009 Field Hockey Season. Ms. Gilman will shadow a special
education high school student/field hockey player after school and on weekends, in
accordance with the field hockey program regular game/tournament schedule.

Approval was given for the formation of an after-school club at the Township of Ocean
Intermediate School named Skills for Success and the posting of staffing for the two
teachers that would be needed to run the club. The cost of the club is $9,238.00
($8,988.00 salaries and $250.00 for supplies) for the year. Staff will be paid the
contractual rate of $28.00 per hour and work 1.5 hours per day, approximately four days
per week. This club is being funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act of 2009 (ARRA) Title I Part A grant, details of the club.
Approval was given for winter coaching assignments for the 2009-2010 school year in
accordance with the list dated September 25, 2009.
Approval was given to Cipriano Apicelli as the Head Baseball Coach for the 2010 spring
season in accordance with the memorandum dated September 29, 2009.
Approval was given for Assistant Girls Basketball Coaching positions for both the
Freshman and JV Levels for the 2009-2010 school year in accordance with the
memorandums (2) dated October 2, 2009.
Approval was given to Lee-Ann Ferrier as a Substitute Bus Driver for the 2009-2010
school year.
