THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL

Hear legal-thriller author James Grippando give a talk, "From Loopholes to Leapholes: Writing
the Good Book on Lawyers," at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Moot Court Room.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9
ACS Four-square Game
In conjunction with a week-long membership drive, the American Constitution Society (ACS) is
hosting a four-square game at noon outside the Student Lounge. See how long you can occupy
the server square.
OWLS Meeting
Older and Wiser Law Students (OWLS) will meet at noon in room 213. Officers for the school
year will be introduced, and upcoming events like the annual Halloween trick-or-treat and our
new Partners group will be discussed. Come learn how OWLS can contribute to your law school
experience!
PILF Meeting
The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) will meet at noon in the Moot Court Room. Come
learn about volunteer opportunities, international public interest internships, and the new federal
legislation that addresses law school debt for public interest attorneys. Pizza will be served, and
dues will be collected.
Majority-focused Diversity Forum
A panel of guest speakers, including Dean Lauren Robel, Indiana School of Law; Dean Richard
McKaig, Student Affairs; Dean Dan Smith of the Business School; and Beverly Calendar
Anderson, Safe and Civil City Director for Bloomington, is at 7:30 p.m. in the SRSC
Auditorium.
While most diversity forums are directed toward and attended by the minority populations on
campus, this event is intended to also reach the majority population. The series of insights from
speakers will be followed by an opportunity for questions and frank discussion about how
members of the majority can create an awareness of and be more effective with cross-cultural
competencies in their leadership. The event will be catered by Buffa Louie's. For more

interested.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10
Legal-Thriller Author Lectures
Author James Grippando will be giving a talk, "From Loopholes to Leapholes: Writing the Good
Book on Lawyers," at noon in the Moot Court Room. It's the story of a six-year struggle to
become a published novelist and the ongoing challenge to write entertaining legal thrillers
without breeding disrespect for the law. Grippando is the author of 15 best-selling novels,
including "Leapholes," the first novel for younger readers ever published by the American Bar

Bell: "Making Homophobia a Crime?"
Lambda Legal hosts a talk featuring Professor Jeannine Bell at noon in room 124. The talk is in
honor of National Coming Out Day and the tentative title is "Making Homophobia a Crime?
GLBT hate crime and the law."
ACS Call-out Meeting
The American Constitution Society (ACS) call-out meeting is at noon in room 125. Pizza and
drinks will be provided and a short film will be shown.
Lunch with a Lawyer: Bob Lattas, JD'01
Bob Lattas, JD'01, presents "The Keys to Establishing a Multi-Million Dollar Book of Business
for the Young Solo Practitioner," from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Lounge. He will talk to
students about starting their own practice. Lattas has a very successful real estate practice in
Chicago. Free pizza for all who RSVP in Symplicity.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11
ILS Organizational Meeting
ILS (International Law Society) will be having its organizational meeting at noon in room 120.
All students are invited. We will have officer elections and discuss plans for the 2007 2008 year.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Coming Soon: Military Justice Week at Indiana Law
Explore the area of military justice from all angles during the Law School's first-ever Military
Justice Week, Oct. 22 26. Students will learn about ethics and practice in the military from
experienced attorneys and practitioners in residence Major Nick Lancaster, JD'99, and Neal
Puckett, JD'84. To close this exciting week, we welcome the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Armed Forces for oral arguments in the case of U.S. v. Daniel Pack.
On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Puckett gives a public talk about ethics in high-profile cases from noon to
1 p.m. in the Law School's Moot Court Room. The former military judge and current defense
attorney specializing in military cases has received public attention for his work in defense of
Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski in the Abu Ghraib case as well as the marines accused in Iraq's
Haditha killings.
On Thursday, Oct. 25, Indiana Law welcomes the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces to
hear arguments in U.S. v. Daniel Pack, a case involving a conviction for indecent acts with a
minor. As part of the Court's "Project Outreach" program, Indiana Law students can act as
student amicus curiae and have the unique opportunity to present oral argument under the
supervision of members of the Court's bar. Following the hearing, judges will take questions
from the audience.
On Friday, Oct. 26, Lancaster presents "Lunch with a Lawyer" in conjunction with the Career
Services Office.
ISBA Panel Discussion
The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) invites you for pizza and a lively panel discussion
from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 (room TBD). Panelists are Holly Harvey, JD'97,
Bunger & Robertson; Clay Miller, JD'93, Baker & Daniels LLP; and Frank Motley, Indiana
University. Learn why these lawyers feel ISBA involvement is beneficial to them and the
community, and learn about free on-line legal research. The lawyers will share with you the type
of law they practice and their unique involvement with bar associations. Bar associations offer an
opportunity for networking with practicing lawyers throughout the state as well as leadership
opportunities.
FACULTY NEWS
Last week Professor Rob Fischman spoke to the annual meeting of regional refuge biologists at
the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He presented on two panels. One dealt with how the refuges
should adapt to climate change; the other concerned the use of the term "trust resources" to
identify high priorities for management.
Professor Leandra Lederman's latest article, "Tax Appeal: A Proposal to Make the U.S. Tax
Court More Judicial," is scheduled to be published in Wash. U. Law Review in June 2008.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Geyh Directs Judicial Disqualification Project
The American Bar Association has established a project to study judicial disqualification, called
"The Judicial Disqualification Project," and asked Professor Charles Geyh to serve as director.
Kate Lee (2L) will serve as assistant to the director. The Project will be aided by a six-member
board of advisors comprised of judges and lawyers.
ACS Membership Drive
The American Constitution Society (ACS) is conducting a membership drive this week during
lunch.
Halloween Party Tickets on Sale
The Student Bar Association (SBA) will be tabling from noon to 1 p.m. in the Law School lobby
Oct. 8 12 for tickets to the SBA Annual Halloween Party to be held Oct. 27.
Briefs from the Kitchen Is Back!
Please submit your recipes for the second edition of "Briefs from the Kitchen," a cookbook
sponsored by the Health Law Society. E-mail your recipes to [email protected]. Cookbooks
will go on sale in November and be back in time for holiday gift-giving.

PDP Thank You Cards for Sale
Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is selling thank you cards in the Law School lobby Monday through
Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. The cards are perfect for those going through OCI and other
interviews. Buy them now before they're sold out!
Scheduling Events
All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to
the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or [email protected]
(for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will
be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests
should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person
requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be
sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at [email protected]. Please include the
name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want
to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at
least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with
news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to
