A Name?
"Undeniably Christian. Academically Excellent."
This byline is the first thing you see on our website.
It caught my eye eighteen months ago when I was
doing a bit of research on the Kalamazoo Christian
Schools. Now it describes me.
Okay, I get academically excellent. Most schools have
that on their signs, letterhead, and web pages, but
undeniably Christian? It is a rather bold statement;
what does it mean? Does it imply that our students
are little angels?
Undeniably Christian suggests that we follow a
Christian worldview that permeates everything that
we do. It is systemic. We say, “God directs and bends
to His will all that happens in the world. As history
unfolds in ways we only know in part, all things…are
under His control.” (Our World Belongs to God) We
see creation as God’s revelation. We believe the Bible
to be God’s Word. If we believe this, then EVERY
subject, every lesson, every behavior should reflect
our belief.
God’s Word teaches us that mankind was created in
His image and that He established a relationship, a
covenant, with His people that is so important to Him
that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to provide
redemption in a fallen world. Christ established God’s
kingdom that is here and now, and to be completed
at the end of time. God works through His people to
build His kingdom. WE are God’s people!
It’s not the trappings of Christianity that define us as
undeniably Christian; it is our heart and mission. We
live in a fallen world and our behavior falls short of
what God expects of us. We are NOT angels. Being
undeniably Christian includes an acknowledgement
that we are sinful, in need of a Savior. Being undeniably
Christian points us to see how God is working in each
of us and in His world.
Our mission at KCSA
is to “Prepare our
students to serve
God
responsibly
in His world by
equipping
them
with
knowledge,
skills, and a Biblical
vision for life for the
advancement of His
Kingdom.” This is
undeniably Christian!

KCSA Preschools Celebrate 25 Years!
Think back to what you were
doing 25 years ago. In case you
are having any trouble with the
math, you are trying to think back
to the 1987-1988 school year.
That fall of 1987 was the start
of the first Kalamazoo Christian
Preschool.
Fifteen
students
made up the first graduating
class – and some of you were in
it! This year, we thank our God
for a quarter century of Christian
preschool!
As with all of the Kalamazoo
Christian schools, parents were
instrumental in starting the first
preschool
program.
Sonshine
Christian Preschool was housed
in the East Christian Elementary
school in Comstock. Check out the
pictures to see if you can identify
the first teacher of the class (the
answer will be given later in the
article).
For the past 25 years, hundreds of
children have been blessed with
a Christ-centered early learning
experience. Many have gone on to
be a part of the Kalamazoo Christian
Schools from Kindergarten through
12th grade, including that first
preschool teacher’s own children.
She also continues to teach at
KCSA. If you have not yet been
able to guess, the teacher is Deb
Heyboer, who currently teaches
1st grade. Several programs have
come and gone over the years,
including preschools at North
Christian Elementary, Immanuel
Lutheran, Second CRC, and The
Bridge. While no longer operating,
their influence continues in the
lives of their students.
KCSA
currently
offers
two
preschool locations. The older of
the two is Little Treasures Christian
Preschool located at Haven
Reformed Church. This program
began in the 1998-1999 school
year, making it already 14 years
old. The other program is the
Kalamazoo Christian Preschool
located at the Kalamazoo
Christian Elementary school. It
began in the 2000-2001 school
year. Since the fall of 2010, this
preschool has also offered a
Spanish Immersion program for
three-year-olds and four-year-olds.
Our current preschool teachers
are Dianne Meyering and Dawn
Thomas at Little Treasures; Amy
VanderKamp, Rachael Batts, and
Nell Dykhuis at Kalamazoo Christian
Preschool; and Melissa Winegar
teaching Spanish Immersion at
Kalamazoo Christian Preschool.
They are aided by MaryBeth
Barkholz, Yolanda Gonzales, and
Jill Hoeksema. If you see one of
these gifted teachers and aides, be
sure to congratulate them on being
a part of 25 years of excellent
Christian preschool!

¡Hola!
At the Kalamazoo Christian
Elementary
School,
Spanish
Immersion education is offered for
3's, 4's, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd
grades, and next year 3rd grade
will be added.
A typical day looks very similar to
a day in a traditional classroom.
For example, in the first grade
classroom we do everything that
the other first graders do! We do
calendar time, devotions, math,
Bible, science, social studies,
reading and writing, just like the
other classes do. We use the same
curriculum when available. We
work very closely with the first
grade team to make sure we are
on exactly the same pace that they
are.
Spanish weaving loom
Spanish is spoken here!
students are not required to speak
Spanish the whole year. Beginning
in Kindergarten and in 1st grade,
part way through the year the
requirement changes that students
speak only Spanish with their
teacher first, then gradually begin
to speak Spanish with their peers
any time they are in the classroom.
This can be a tough transition for
students, but we have found that
they are incredibly capable and do
extremely well with this when they
know it is expected of them. I am
impressed daily at my students’
ability to speak Spanish all day like
they do!
Another difference in a Spanish
Immersion classroom is that we
are constantly teaching language.
For example, when we talk about
The only (major) difference
is that every minute of our
day is spoken in Spanish!
Students read in Spanish,
write in Spanish, and
speak in Spanish - to their
teachers and to their peers.
This is done gradually as it
takes longer to be able to
speak in a new language
than to understand a new
language.
In
the 3's, 4's, and
Kindergarten classes, the

nouns, we have students listen for
nouns in all subject areas. When
we talk about grammar concepts
that are different from English
ones, such as having a feminine/
masculine gender, we look for and
listen for those in all subjects.
Often, the most common concern is,
"Will my child still be able to speak
and read and write in English?"
The answer is a resounding YES.
Not one student in the curriculum
we use, add.a.lingua, has been
left behind in their ability to read
in both English and Spanish.
Students at KCES are traditionally
taught to read and write in English
in 3rd grade. Since the Spanish
Immersion students have already
learned how to read in Spanish,
with the helpful strategies they have
learned they can more
easily transfer over to
reading in English. As
they learn phonics and
word patterns to help
them read in English,
they are prepared
to continue reading
bilingually from then
on. ¡Adiós!

Spanish Immersion:byTKristiheVanDyk
Parent Perspective
“Why Did We Choose Immersion?”
The reason we chose Spanish
Immersion for our child is a difficult
question to answer simply, but is
one that has been very valuable
to sit down and ponder in writing.
There are many ways that we, as
parents, could answer this:
The Short Answer: Why not?
The Textbook Answer: Results
generally show the more language
kids learn at an early age, the
better they score on all sorts of
standardized testing, the better
language learners they become
later in life, and the more income
they can potentially earn as adults.
The Practical Answer: I work as
the project manager for a company
that assists schools in developing
immersion programs - my kids
should probably be bilingual.
The Truth: We chose immersion
for reasons far greater than
potential SAT scores, for more
than future earned income, and
certainly beyond proving a point
at the office. Our reasons get
down to the core of what we
believe as Christians living in the
world today: we want to instill in
our children a love for others, a
passion for people outside their
native community, and encourage
them to turn towards things that
are unfamiliar and hunger after
new experiences.
What better way to take steps
toward those goals than by making
second language acquisition a
priority?
Thus far, in our two years of
preschool Spanish immersion, my
children (yes, children … what my
4-year-old daughter experiences
engages my 2-year-old son) have
forged deep bonds with a native
speaking family that they will carry
with them throughout their life.
They’ve learned enough language
to bring smiles to the faces of
native speakers in Costa Rica.
They’ve explored authentic foods
from Spanish-speaking countries
and loved them! And all of that has
made them eager to learn even
more! My children are learning,
even at very young ages, that
this world is full of exciting places
to visit, beautiful things to see,
and it’s so big that knowing only
English isn’t enough to capture all
of the wonder.
We chose this path for our
children despite our fears. We
aren’t bilingual; we won’t be able
to understand them when they
converse in Spanish, but greater
than this fear is the excitement
at seeing what opportunities
and experiences are open to
our children as a result of being
multilingual.

Heritage of Faith and Hope
In the summer of 2012, a
group of students from KCHS,
led by Mr. Steve Dyk, went
to Kenya where they visited
the Heritage of Faith and
Hope Children's Rehabilitation
Centre.
The vision of the
Centre is to empower vulnerable children and
orphans to elevate themselves to a meaningful and
productive lifestyle. For nine years, Heritage of Faith
and Hope has provided high-quality education and
community living to children within Nairobi. Since
2003, Heritage of Faith has partnered with business
mentors through Partners Worldwide to strengthen
an effective approach to orphan care.
In November, Teresia Waweru, one of the leaders
of the Heritage of Faith Centre, came to KCHS and
spoke to the students in chapel. Shortly after that,
KCHS was presented with a unique opportunity to
serve.
6
Each
KCHS
student
was
challenged to donate $10 of their
own money, for a school-wide
goal of $2500 to be donated to
the Heritage of Faith students.
Each anchor group was matched
up with a student from Heritage of Faith and our hope
is that this will become a long-term, yearly project
with letters, videos, and even Skype conversations
happening between Heritage of Faith and KCHS.
As of the end of the school year, students raised $1400.
We look forward to beginning our communications
with Heritage of Faith students!

I thought you would
love to hear some
details about our
awesome 7th and
8th grade Mathletes
and the competition
held on April 25
at Trinity Christian
College. Here’s the amazing
facts:
• K a l a m a z o o
Christian Middle
School placed 2nd overall (behind Timothy
Christian.)
• There were 21 schools represented there, for a
total of 240 kids.
• All the schools present were Christian schools
from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and one from
Pittsburgh (on skype).
• We were the only school from Michigan.
• This was the 20th Math Triathlon Trinity put on
and our 3rd appearance. Chuck Commeret was
a Trinity alum and got us started.
The Triathlon activities
included an individual
test, a four-person team
test and a team relay
race. Two prizes were
awarded for the fourperson team event,
and KCMS took both
prizes! Yea, that’s right,
a sweep! There was
a 3-way tie for 1st for
the relay event, and we
placed 2nd behind that
group. For the individual
test, Jared Dirksen scored the highest for our school.
1st Place: KCMS Team Two
Our two teachers, Jenna VanderWoude and Andrea
Farwell, were the youngest there, and what a great
job they did preparing our students all year long.
The kids looked sharp - they were the only ones with
matching shirts, which made it easy to pick them
out in the crowd. The kids behaved beautifully, had
a great time, and represented KCMS proudly!
2nd Place: KCMS Team One

Varsity Girls Softball
State Champions! by Karla Reno
Each time I walk into our high school gym I am struck by
the banners hanging there. Our schools have always been
blessed with a rich heritage of athletic accomplishment.
It wasn’t until this season that I realized how special
each of those banners are, and how amazing the stories
of sacrifice and perseverance behind each one must be.
On Saturday, June 15, I was privileged to be head
coach when our softball team captured the 2013 State
Championship. I can’t describe to you the feeling of
relief and pride I felt when Morgan Locker scored the
final run to end the game. I’ll never forget that moment.
I’ll also never forget that my two oldest daughters,
Taylor and Tori, were on my team this glorious season
and we have this memory and accomplishment to share
for a lifetime. God is indeed great.
From here forward, I know that when I see those
banners in the gym, ours among them, I will have an
appreciation for the amount of sheer work that went
into each one. I now know the love that must have been
present between the coaches and teammates that made
such a special thing possible.
Like any road, our road to the championship was
sometimes bumpy, sometimes smooth, but our team
learned to rely on God to guide us, and we were richly
rewarded. To my coaches Dave Doorn and Terry
Reynolds, and team; Stephanie VanderLugt, Taylor
Sides, Carly VandenBerg, Madison Locker, Morgan
Locker, Hanna Rozeveld, Tori Sides, Jessica Doorn, Erica
Block, Cara Knasel, Kara Gjeltema, McKena Razenberg,
and Bekah VanDam, thank you so much. You made this
year unforgettable, and I will feel forever blessed to
have been a part of it.

Girls Track & Field by Joey DeKoekkoek
27 girls joined coaches Joey DeKoekkoek and Mike
Lubbers to be a part of the incredible track and field
team. Our captains, Carley Ackerman, Allison Bosch,
Erika DeKoekkoek, Becca Dykstra &
Hannah Wolthuis were joined by fellow
seniors Hannah Hendriksen, Paige
Sikkenga & Alicia Wright to provide
the super leadership for our entire
team. Rounding out the team was Angel
Augustus, Samatha Beebe, Gabby Brandt,
Jessica Crawford, Tess DeJong, Sarah Fase,
Gillian Heidema, Brooke Leep, Catherine
Lilek, Anna Garcia, Chloe Maxwell, Kate
McLain, Erin Meinema, Jodi Stoffer,
Tori Veldkamp, Kirsten Welborn, Drea
Youngblood and Micaela Ziegler.
The season stared in cold, snowy fashion
with a number of cancellations. Once the weather
started to cooperate, we ended up with a very solid
3-3 record for the dual meet season. The invitational
JV Girls Softball by Terry Reynolds
part of our season had some great success. We brought
home the 3rd place trophy at the Marcelllus Invite,
6th place at Bangor, 7th at the Gobles Invite (with 17
other teams), 2nd at the Schoolcraft
Invite and an incredible 6th place at
regionals. At that regional we took
home 26 medals!
Special recognition to Allison Bosch
and Kate McLain who qualified
for the state final's meet. Allison
finished 12th in the state in the
discus while Kate finished 20th in
the 1600 and 30th in the 3200. We
also had 2 relay teams that put in
some of the best times KCHS has
ever seen.
We were also honored to be presented with the
sportsmanship trophy at the Schoolcraft Invite and the
KVA Sportmanship award for 2013. Way to represent
girls!
The 2013 Kalamazoo Christian
Junior Varsity softball season can
be defined by two words: weather
and courage. All of the spring
sports had to deal with extreme
cold, snow, rain, and cancellations.
This year's JV team also dealt
with a barrage of injured players,
which hampered the abilities of the
girls in competing against some
10
of the best JV teams in the area.
Together as a team, they were able
to persevere through the obstacles
and finish 4-19 for the season,
and 4-8 in the KVA. A highlight of
this season was defeating DeltonKellogg
in a doubleheader at
Delton. This was an amazing team
that loved each other, their school,
and the game of softball.

the vast improvement seen in each player on the
team. Multiple members of this team will soon
be heavy contributors at the varsity level. Team
members were Billy Ruh, Nate Herder, Jared Corwin,
