OHIO SECTION MEETING
Wednesday, May 7, 5:30 pm
Dayton, Ohio
Renowned fossil hunter Tom Johnson will present:
“Discovering the Mysterious Trilobite.”
We are pleased to have renowned trilobite hunter Tom Johnson serve as guest speaker. Tom’s presentation
follows his new book “Discovering the Mysterious Trilobite.” He will focus on the various orders of
Paleozoic era trilobites, including Ohio’s state fossil, the Isotelus maximus. He’ll share fossil preservation
and excavation techniques. And we will get a first-hand account of his experiences in the field, including
those in 1986 when he discovered the largest complete specimen of Isotelus maximus recorded at that time.
As a professional trilobite hunter, Tom Johnson has contributed to paleontology and earth science education
through his fossil finds, and through his loaning of numerous specimens to various museums and
institutions. While excavating at Caesar’s Creek State Park, on behalf of the Smithsonian Institute in 1986,
Tom unearthed the largest complete Isotelus maximus recorded at that time. This remarkable thirteen and
a half inch specimen is on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, "Life in the Ancient Seas”
gallery. Some five hundred of his fossil finds have been displayed there since 1990. Since his Caesar’s
Creek discoveries, Tom continues to make remarkable finds, including a 14 and three-quarter inch Isotelus
maximus in Adams County. When an earlier Smithsonian exhibit ended, he displayed his returned
specimens in his rock and mineral shop and trilobite gallery. Tom is the author of three books: Trilobites,
Trailing the Trilobite, and his latest work, Discovering the Mysterious Trilobite.
In addition to collecting fossils and minerals, Tom sells and displays them at his rock and mineral shop,
House of Phacops, located in Locust Grove, Adams County. For more information, guests are invited to

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Christopher Everett, CPG-10839
Spring is here, and the Executive Committee looks forward to meeting Section members, new and old, at
our next meeting to be held May 7, 2008. We are excited to have Mr. Tom Johnson as our featured speaker
for the evening. Mr. Johnson is a fossil enthusiast and collector, and some of his finds are on display with
the Smithsonian. Since my youth I have always been fascinated with fossils, and it is one of the many things
that attracted me to the geological sciences – which I suspect it is true for many of us! With that in mind,
I hope to see you for what is sure to be an enjoyable presentation.
The Executive Committee has been discussing how to reach out to and engage our section membership, the
student sections, and the general public. As part of this effort, we anticipate updating the section website
at www.aipg-ohio.org. I encourage you to go to the website to look it over, while considering how it could
be improved in order to benefit our members. If you would like to provide any comments about the website
and how it can be improved, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or Mort Schmidt, our
newsletter Editor at [email protected] . [Please include the acronym “AIPG” in the title of
your emails – Editor].
Finally, we will be looking for members to serve on the Executive Committee in 2009. Positions that need
to be filled include President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. Please consider
volunteering for YOUR professional organization.

Ohio Geological Survey CO2 No. 1 Well in Tuscarawas County, Ohio
Drilling, coring, logging, and injectivity testing of the ODNR, Division of Geological Survey CO2 well
No. 1 Well in Tuscarawas County was completed in August 2007. The well was drilled to a total depth
of 8,695 feet in Precambrian crystalline rock. This joint project between the Ohio Geological Survey and
Battelle Memorial Institute was accomplished with funding from the state’s general revenue fund and the
Ohio Coal Development Office clean coal research funds. The stratigraphic test was conducted to
provide additional data for evaluation of the CO2 injectivity and storage capacity of potential reservoirs
and the effectiveness of their potential confining units.
