Inside the Earth What do the Earth and a loaf of bread have in common? They both have a crust. Just as a loaf of bread, the Earth’s crust is the outer layer that is thinner than the rest. The Earth has four main layers that are different in size and material. The crust, made of granite and volcanic rock, is about three to five miles thick under the oceans and about 25 miles thick under the continents. The Earth’s crust is not one giant piece; it is made of many pieces called “plates.” The plates float on top of the middle is a softer, movable layer below the crust. The deepest parts of the crust are 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. That is hot! However, it is not as hot as the rest of the Earth. The mantle is thicker than the crust and is made of hot rock. It flows like hot pavement. Its temperature ranges from 1,600 to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The core of the Earth is like a very hot ball of metals. It is 4,000 to 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The outer core is so hot that all metals flow like syrup. The inner core is under three million times greater pressure than sea level. It looks like a round ball of dried mud, but it’s buzzing! Wait- Something is crawling out of it. It’s a wasp, and that clump is its nest. There are about twenty five thousand different types of wasps. Most experts divided them into groups: social and solitary wasps. Social wasps build nests out ot chewed wood, like the one described above. Inside the nest there are tiny pockets for the wasps and their eggs. Hundreds of insects may live in one nest, and the nest may be several inches across. Hornets, yellow jackets and paper wasps are all social wasps. Solitary wasps like to do things that own way. It finds a crab in the sand and eats it. Then the octopus settles into a small hole among some rocks. Its skin changes color to match the rocks, helping it hide. Feeling safe, the octopus looks around for food. A minute later, an eel frightens the shy octopus. The octopus shoots a cloud of dark liquid into the water. Under cover of its “ink cloud,” the octopus hurries away. The octopus has two large eyes. It can see very well. This helps it hunt for food and look out for its enemies. It has a soft body with a head, a trunk, and a “skirt.” Eight arms are connected to the skirt. There are two rows of suckers on each arm. In the center of the skirt is a mouth like a beak. This is because the corals that build them need warmth and sunlight to live. These creatures are cousins of the jellyfish. They eat tiny plants and animals that float in the water. They are shaped like short tubes and grow one on top of another. They pile up, like apartment buildings for fish. Over time, some die and others grow on their bones. Fish and other sea creatures add to the pile. Sand fills the spaces between them. In this way, over many years, reefs are made. Some are thousands of years old and cover many miles. Fish, sea snakes, and other sea animals move in. In fact, the area becomes crowded with life, just like a city. These city dwellers find holes that offer safety from their enemies. They eat tiny plants and animals that drift in the water. Many more eat each other. People eat the animals that live there too. We also make medicines from some of them.
