Activity #1: world cultures dınner
party
• You are giving a dinner party for your World Cultures classmates. The menu has been decided and now all that is left is for you to go shopping. In your town there are only 2 grocery stores. An “old world” grocery and a “new world” grocery. 1
• The NEW WORLD GROCERY only sells products that came from the Americas, “The New World,” to Europe, Africa and Asia via the Columbian Exchange. 2
• The OLD WORLD GROCERY only sells products that came from Asia, Africa, and Europe, “ The Old World,” to the Americas via the Columbian Exchange. 3
• On the following page is a menu for your dinner party. Under each course is a list of ingredients. Use the link at the bottom of the page to complete your grocery list handout. If the grocery item is from the “new world,” mark it under the new world market list. If the grocery item is from the “old world,” mark it under the old world market list. 4
Drinks: Lemonade and Chocolate Milk
• lemons, sugar
• Cow’s Milk, Cocoa, sugar
Appetizer: Garden Salad
• lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, olive oil, lemon juice
Main Course: Sausage, Baked Potato, and veggies
• sausage, potatoes, asparagus, brussel sprouts
Dessert: Fruit Salad
• strawberries, bananas, grapefruit, peaches, vanilla
