Industry automation
More than just productivity
Today, automation is an essential factor in
Danish industry. When companies implement
automation, they obtain enhanced production efficiency: their working environment is
improved, lead times are reduced and energy
consumption is minimized. ABB offers a wide
range of automation products and systems for
the entire Danish industry.
Our customers operate in fields such as food
and beverages, pharmacy, chemistry and consumer goods.
Our automation solutions ensure that our customers remain competitive, flexible and reliable,
and guarantee their product quality. They also
offer an effective way of documenting production in detail so that any faults can be traced
later – or provide input for improvements.

Robots gain ground
ABB is the world’s leading
supplier of industrial robots.
Robots are gaining ground in
modern industrial production especially in the
pharmaceutical and the food industries. In addition to increased productivity, the advantage of
using robots is that they can carry out hard and
monotonous work and enhance the quality of
applications such as sorting, packing and pal-
monitored either upstream or downstream in the production,
and, in principle, right back to the pig breeders. This function is
important if, for example, a source of infection has to be found.
This system is structured as a factory database providing the
central hub between the various items of process equipment in
the factory and the main systems. Besides its extensive number
of records the database has a number of other functions,
including an advanced detailed planning tool. On the basis of
the general plan made centrally in SAP the factory staff can
amend and optimise order handling and, if necessary, react to
changes in the supply of raw materials or production condition.

Alarm Management with clear results
Alarms rarely go off on their own, and which alarm should you react to first? Alarm Management can provide you
with the ideal solution to your dilemma. Implementing an Alarm Management philosophy with the right kind of
follow-up ensures that the operators in a control room have the tools, skills and working conditions required to deal
with alarms in the best way possible.
As a supplier to the offshore operators in the
North Sea we are involved in all commercial
operations. Our IT systems and services
ensure efficiency, continuity and production
process optimization. The safety of personnel

environment are absolutely crucial when it
comes to supplies to the offshore industry.

In Denmark, ABB is a pioneer in the field and contribute heavily to ensuring that many production facilities are made more
aware of the benefits of good Alarm Management. DONG Energy A/S was one of the first companies to invest in Alarm
Management in cooperation with ABB. Their experiences have been very positive in terms of both results and finance, as
demonstrated by a Return on Investment time of just a few months. Better prioritization of important alarms, fewer alarms
in general and less stress in the control room have been the most significant reasons for this success. Consequently,
Dong Energy A/S has achieved a more stable production ensuring the required production figures for the company.
ABB technology enhances the efficiency
of large ships and power plants
ABB is a leader on the world market for turbochargers for diesel and gas engines over 500
kW. More than 170,000 ABB turbochargers are
in operation, working with all kinds of engines
on ships, at power plants, on oil platforms and
in diesel locomotives. These turbochargers
provide a massive increase in motor performance and they have a very long life time.
Extending the life time of ships
We supply innovative and tested solutions to
the marine and shipping industry to optimize the
operation of ships throughout their life time. At
the same time ABB’s global presence makes it
possible for our customers to acquire service
and support in any harbour.
Did you know that
In Denmark, we service our ABB turbochargers at the premises of our customers or at
our modern service centres in Skovlunde and
Fredericia. Our service is supported by a
substantial worldwide service network of over 80
specially equipped turbocharger service stations.
The Freedom of the Seas, currently the largest cruise ship in the world, is driven
by ABB Azipods. An Azipod combines engine, screw and helm to form a single unit which is installed
beneath the ship’s hull. This enables the ship to manoeuvre much more freely. Freedom of the Seas
has had three units of 14 MW each installed.
Demands for environmentally friendly solutions, manoeuvrability and comfort for the 4,370 passengers and 1,360 crew members have made our Azipods the natural choice of propulsion system for this cruise ship. But other vessels such as yachts, ferries, Arctic tankers, offshore supply ships
and ice-breakers also use ABB Azipods to their advantage
ABB has supplied solutions which control and monitor all the pumps, engines, instruments, valves, etc. linked to the operation of the Dong Energy Siri production platform, as well as the three linked satellite installations Cecilie, Nini and Stine 1.

ABB ensures overview during power black out
50,000 households without electricity – in the winter. That is precisely what happened on 8 January 2005 when a vicious hurricane swept
the northern part of Denmark. In just a few hours heavy damage had been sustained by the Himmerlands Elforsyning’s grid, which
includes some 2,000 km of overhead lines. Consequently, 1,864 transformer stations out of 2,590 broke down in a very short time. Staff
from Himmerlands Elforsyning took immidiate action. The ABB remote control system gave them the necessary overview of which towns
and districts had been affected by the grid outage. After two days’ hard work all customers had access to electricity again.

ABB systems are used to help secure the supply of electricity, gas and district
heating to half of all consumers in Denmark?

CO2 emissions by 500,000 tonnes, equivalent to 1 % of Denmark’s
total CO2 emissions. This farm consists of 72 wind turbines, each
of which is able to output 2.3 MW. The wind farm is monitored

oven. A little ABB drive is built into each fan oven which is used to regulate the speed of
the air flow inside - partly to protect the fan and partly to enhance the quality of baking. It
is important to make sure that the heat can be regulated so that the products are baked evenly. This little
drive allows the temperature to be controlled ungraduated, making it easy to control the baking process.

Service can be non-recurrent or a partnership

Sustainability for ABB means seeking a balance
between economic development, environmental
stewardship and social progress. Sustainability
is built into different aspects of our business,
including the manufacturing of energy saving
products, systems and solutions, the sharing of
technology throughout our group, particularly
with developing countries, and joining multilateral
efforts to raise living standards around the world.
One of our main contributions to sustainability
lies in the strong environmental performance
of our products over their complete life cycles.
Using life cycle assessments, we supply pro
ducts and systems that require less material,
have greater efficiency and consume less energy which means less harmful emissions – particularly during long operating lifetimes.
ABB follows the guidelines of the Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI) – an international,
multi-stakeholder undertaking supported by the
United Nations. The GRI guidelines are based
on a measurable “triple bottom line” reporting
approach – covering environmental, economic,
and social performance. We report accordingly
in ABB’s annual Sustainability review.
Service is just as much a part of our business
as motors and software. Just as we design our
products to meet the requirements of each individual company we also customize service
agreements to meet the needs of our customers.

Sustainable energy production in Greenland
From the autumn of 2007, Qorlortorsuaq, the most modern hydroelectric power station in the world, will be supplying all electricity to
the two towns of Narsaq and Qaqortoq (formerly Julianehåb) in Southern Greenland. With the construction of this hydroelectric power
station, Nukissiorfiit – Greenland’s energy supply company – will be able to close down the two old, diesel-driven power plants and at
the same time massively increase the utilisation of the inexpensive and environmentally friendly source of hydro power.
ABB supplies and commissions the power plant’s remote control system and protection systems, and in this way we help Nukissiorfiit
make an important and long-awaited step in the direction of more sustainable energy production. Nukissiorfiit is expecting to be able to
produce approximately 29 GW, equivalent to more than 15 % of Greenland’s total energy consumption.
