O Submit for grading. 4.02 This assignment can be confusing. You will need four different texts. Let’s go over the details to help you complete the worksheet. It will help you to identify the theme before locating primary and secondary sources. Sample Thematic Ideas THEME: General idea throughout the story. THEME STATEMENT: Describes the general meaning of the work but not include specific references to characters, events, or actions. O You will include details from all four sources in your outline, which is 4.03. O You will include citations in 4.04. 4.03 The goal is 4.03 is to create a thesis statement and outline for your 4.04 paper. This is very similar to what we did in lesson 2.05 and 2.06. We told ya’ that info would come in handy! Try looking in the gradebook at those two assignments if you need help. Literary Elements You will identify three literary elements that are found in both pieces of literature, then explore how they develop the theme. THESIS STATEMENT: A one sentence statement that explains the “what” and “why” for your 4.04 paper. SAMPLE: Both Sue Monk Kidd, author of the novel The Secret Life of Bees, and Maya Angelou, author of the poem Still I Rise, use point of view, setting, and conflict to develop the theme of prejudice in their twentieth century literary works. NOTE: Book titles are underlined. Poems and short stories are italicized. COMPLETE THE OUTLINE BY FILLING IN THE BLANKS: SAMPLE: I. Main Idea for 1st Body Paragraph – Point of View A. Literary Element use and effect in novel 1. Specific example – The novel is told through the eyes of Lilly, a young girl in Georgia in the 1930s. The use of a child as a narrator adds innocence to the story to expose prejudice. 2. Specific example - “It is the peculiar nature of the world to go spinning no matter what sort of heartbreak is happening.” B. Literary Element use and effect in 2nd piece of literature 1. Specific example – The narrator uses repetition to set the tone of confidence despite injustice. 2. Specific example – “You may tread me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise” C. Relation of This Literary Element to the Theme 1. Primary Source shows that prejudice existed at the time, because the act was passed to prevent acts that would “deny or abridge the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race.” 2. Secondary Source explains that “The Voting Rights Act itself has been called the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation ever passed by Congress.” 4.04 … FINALLY! O Now it’s time to write your paper. O Remember, you’ve done the hard part O 4.01 Reading the novel O 4.02 Research O 4.03 Outlining Now it’s up to you to put everything together in one amazing paper. Commonly Made Mistakes The greatest mistake most students make is forgetting to include the following: O MLA Formatting O Specific details, include quotes O In-text Citations O MLA Works Cited page MLA Formatting Use this awesome tool in the classroom for the basics of setting up your paper: Specifics Your supporting body paragraphs should include cited lines of support from both texts along with either the primary or secondary sources. Look back to your outline for help! You planned these paragraphs in advance. In Text Citations O You must always name the source when you provide either direct quotes or information from any of your four resources. O The type of citations vary, but here are some samples: O According to The United States Department of Justice website, “The Voting Rights Act itself has been called the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation ever passed by Congress.” O The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was among the most significant pieces of civil rights legislation in history (justice.gov) .
