The holiday season is such a wonderful time for music—we hear everywhere
during this period of the year some of the finest classical music written for the
occasion as well as inspiring traditional carols and tuneful popular classics. The
brilliant, multi-talented Canadian artist Jann Arden recently recorded her take
on the season’s most beloved songs and I’m thrilled to have her perform them
in her début with your Toronto Symphony Orchestra! The beautiful voices of the
Etobicoke School of the Arts Holiday Chorus also join us for this performance,
and you, too, will have the chance to contribute to this Christmas soundscape
in our annual sing-along. May this concert of holiday music warm your hearts
and get you in the holiday spirit!

The Jingle, Jangle Sing-along Text
Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer
You know Dasher and Dancer
and Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen,
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve,
Santa came to say,
Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then how the reindeer loved him,
As they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer
You’ll go down in history.
Frosty, The Snowman
Oh Frosty the Snowman
Was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the Snowman
Is a fairytale, they say
He was made of snow but the children know
How he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic
In that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around.
Oh Frosty the Snowman
Was alive as he could be
And the children say
He could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me.
Thumpity thump thump
Thumpity thump thump
Look at Frosty go,
Thumpity thump thump
Thumpity thump thump
Over the hills of snow.
Here Comes Santa Claus
Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane.
Vixen and Blitzen and all his reindeer
Pulling on the rein.
Bells are ringing, children singing,
All is merry and bright.
Hang your stockings and say a prayer,
‘Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
Right down Santa Claus Lane.
He’s got a bag that’s filled with toys
For boys and girls again.
Hear those sleigh bells jingle jangle,
Oh, what a beautiful sight.
Jump in bed and cover up your head,
‘Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.
Jingle Bells
Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go
Laughing all the way,
Bells on bob-tail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.
Refrain
Oh jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh, hey
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh. (Repeat refrain)

THE ARTISTS
Etobicoke School of the Arts
Holiday Chorus
Megan Benjafield
Music Director
The Etobicoke School of the Arts Chorus made its
TSO début in November, 2008.
The Etobicoke School of the Arts Chorus is comprised
of the Grades 11 and 12 music theatre classes at
the Etobicoke School of the Arts (ESA). The music
theatre department, headed by Paul Aikins, is one
of six majors offered at ESA, which is the oldest free-standing arts-focused high
school in Canada. In the music theatre program, students are involved in intensive
“triple threat” training, and gain experience and instruction in voice, drama, dance,
and theoretical studies. Every year, they hone their craft with a full-scale musical, in
addition to showcase performances. Students from this chorus are also involved in
a number of extra-curricular ensembles, including SPLASH and GLO, ESA’s awardwinning show choirs, and MusicFest national invitees Chamber Choir, JAMME, and
WOCO. This year’s chorus is led by Megan Benjafield with rehearsal accompanist
Michael Vieira.
