Established in 1840, the Port was South Australia’s first State
Heritage Area, and exploring its old buildings, museums and
antique stores is a great way to while away an afternoon.
Start your Port Adelaide experience with a visit to the awardwinning Visitor Information Centre. Here you can book a guided
Port Walk, providing a fascinating insight into the history of this
once bustling port
Museum lovers are well catered for in Port Adelaide. Don’t miss
the South Australian Maritime Museum in Lipson Street, with its
regularly changing exhibitions about the state’s seafaring history.
Other local museums include the National Railway Museum,
South Australian Aviation Museum, National Military Vehicle
Museum and Australian Museum of Childhood
Sunday is market day at the Port. Check out the Fishermen’s
Wharf Markets for an assortment of books, bric-a-brac, arts and
crafts. It’s located next to the area’s central icon - the Port
Lighthouse, which you can climb for stunning views of the Port
River and heritage precinct.The nearby Torrens Island fresh
produce market is also great to visit on a Sunday morning.You
can buy fresh fish direct from the fishing boats and you may see a
dolphin or two checking out the action!
