Pastor for Welcoming Ministry. 11:46a LUNCH — CFH Atria Canyon Creek Hosting Dear Friends, On Monday, June 19, we will come together for The Gathering. It will be my last time to be with you as Minister of Senior Adult Ministry. It all began almost twelve years ago since we covenanted to create a vision that has led us to where we are now in ministry. All we have been able to accomplish was made possible because the foundation that had been developed by Harold Rucker and so many volunteers. Roger Fortney, Jim and Betty Nickell, Bob and Linda Campbell and Joanne and Mike Patrick have stepped up and provided faithful leadership along with a large number of volunteers these several years. At The Gathering in June I will lift up and thank several others who have worked hard and faithfully to help create our meaningful ministry and the difference it has made in the lives of so many. It has been my privilege to work with so many that made possible our vibrant Senior Adult Ministry. Laverne and I look forward to greeting you at The Gathering on Monday, June 19. 12:45p Fred Treviño Gathering Services Handyman Program FirstRichardsonHelpers.org Help with Minor Home Repairs / Medical Equipment Loan Program [email protected] Hotline Number 972-996-0160 Call Howard Kennedy if you need medical equipment or would like to donate same. Great food and lively conservation makes for a great day at the Gathering. ~ Don and Valerie Tarrant LECTURE Dr. Carey A Patrick, O. D., presented a very interesting program on Ocular Nutrition. She started out by noting that children should have their first eye exam between the age of six months and one year. The second should occur between the ages of 5-9 years, then another after the age of ten. Another point she made was to have a retina scan as a part of an annual eye examination to determine the quality of nutrition reaching the retina. We think of macular degeneration as affecting only older persons, but can occur in middle age as well. Another possible problem is that of glaucoma, so a test should be done for that. Glaucoma can be treated well if caught early. Remember that nerves do not regenerate; therefore, prevention is one of the main keys to healthy eyes. Many medications have sight related side effects, so they should be monitored when any new medication is added. One of the conditions we can have the most effect on is that of nutrition. A well-balanced diet will provide the nutrients that not only help our eyesight, but our general health as well. Items that can also be controlled balanced diet and always drink plenty of water. ~ Roger Fortney ENTERTAINMENT The Mobile Music Ministry presented a most entertaining program. This was the first time that all six persons were together for this program— ”Sounds of Summer”. We were entertained by instrumentalists (piano, clarinet, and saxophone) and singers. The program started out with Concerto for Two Clarinets in E flat Major, OPO. 91, the third movement. Next was He’s Been Faithful, a great testament about our faith; Trust His Heart which stressed that we are never alone, to not be unkind and when we don’t see the master plan, trust Him.; and Fly Me to the Moon. Tim Walker, baritone, sang a tribute to his grandmother and the affect she had on his life. The program ended with one of my favorite songs, You’ll Never Walk Alone by Jerome Kern Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. This was a musical group that was very professional and very entertaining. We hope they’ll return for an encore. ~ Roger Fortney Page 2 of 4 June 26— 1 pm — COLEMAN HALL BRIDGE June 7 & June 26 1 pm — BFLC RM 1 D/E May Top Bridge Scores Len Brownlee Warren Andrews Beverly Whitley Nancy Brownlee Nancy Zachary 5950 4940 4340 4250 3830 For more information about bridge or games, contact: Gladys Wende 972-235-7354 NO Book Reviews for the summer. Dr. Flanagan is currently the District Superintendent of the Missouri River District of the Great Plains Conference. He has served as a pastor of large churches, small churches, and was an associate pastor on the staff of a large church. Dan brings a wealth of experience to our team. For long time Dallas area folks, it is interesting to note that he was Sports Director at WBAP radio when they were the home station of the Texas Rangers. Dan was one of the pioneers of a format we now know as Sports Talk Radio. Please welcome Dan to our staff team and help him feel at home. In Christ, Clayton Oliphint One of our favorite Bible passages is from Ecclesiastes 3 - “A Time for All Seasons.” It explains so many rites of passage. However, one was left out—‘a time to work and a time to retire’. Fred has been working on the retire part several times, but we believe he thinks now is the right time. While Fred is the ordained worker, we cannot think of him and his accomplishments without considering his trusty sidekick, Laverne. They have had a beautiful ministry together and have grown a significant Senior Adult Ministry here at FUMCR. We have been blessed and will continue to benefit from the seeds they planted and nurtured. Fred has worked hard and has definitely earned the right to take it easy, travel, and enjoy the fruits of his labor with his beautiful bride. So we say Aloha and Bon Voyage to Fred and Laverne as they leave for their upcoming travel to Hawaii. We have the anticipation of their return in a new and exciting chapter of their lives. Fred and Laverne, from all your friends at FUMCR—we love you! Mike and Joanne Patrick for Senior Adult Council You’ll love the Senior Adults. We’re full of sermon material. Page 4 of 4
