“Y” pronoun
Use “y” to replace a noun that starts with a
preposition.
When
is “Y”
used?
▹ “Y” is used to avoid repeating a place
that was previously mentioned.
▹ “Y” is used to replace a place that begins
with a preposition (a, dans, chez, sur…)
▹ “Y” in English is normally equivalent to
“there”.
How do
I use
“Y”?
To form a sentence using “Y”:
1. Ask yourself “Is there a noun
that starts with a preposition?
2. Replace that noun and
preposition with “Y”
3. Put “Y” before the verb.
Examples
1. Ils vont au cinema.
→ Ils y vont.
2. Vous allez a l’ecole.
→ Vous y allez.
3. Je vais au restaurant avec ma
famille.
→ J’y vais avec ma famille.
