heard throughout Broadway
Plaza as the enthusiastic crowd
gathers at the starting line. Dogs of every
shape, color, and size–and even a few
cats!–decked out in bright costumes and
accessories prance happily on leashes
alongside their families. Tails wagging
with anticipation and wet noses sniffing
at the air, the animals seem to sense this
isn’t any ordinary walk. Hundreds of
people and pets are about to put their
paws to the pavement for ARF’s animals.
The Pet Walk is a one-mile walk
to promote awareness of the plight of
abandoned dogs and cats and raise funds
to save innocent lives. We need your help

rescue even more animals.

Letter from ARF’s Executive Director
I
t’s no secret that ARF is lucky. Have you ever heard the
saying, “The harder you work, the luckier you get”? We
are hard at work saving lives.
After spending 12 years operating out of donated office
space and a rented store front with our animals in foster
homes, we know how lucky we are to have built a shelter.
Our headquarters is a beautiful destination for animal lovers
in the community, and allows us to care for and rehome
pets using the best available resources. We feel fortunate to
have developed many wonderful relationships with donors,
volunteers, community leaders, and celebrity supporters.
Rescuing animals who have run out of time, giving them
medical care, and bringing their magic to people in need are
all labors of love. ARF is truly lucky due to our incredible
network of supporters who embrace our mission and who
make every achievement and milestone possible.
At ARF’s fundraising events, musicians, comedians,
athletes, and performers donate their time and talents for the
critters. However, they are not the only ones we need. ARF’s
dedicated donors and volunteers may not have marquee
recognition, but they are certainly deserving of it.

Mere months ago, Hurricane Sandy ripped across the
Eastern seaboard causing major damage, particularly in New
York City. The devastation was immense. Miles of the city
were blacked out and flooded, displacing thousands of people and their cherished pets.
ARF has proudly participated in numerous disaster relief
efforts across the country. When the ASPCA reached out for
help with a temporary shelter in Brooklyn, ARF was ready to
respond! ARF Animal Nursing Supervisor Jennifer Peabody,
RVT had been part of the disaster relief team after the Joplin tornado, and would lead the ARF team deployed to New
York.
After a long journey and orientation on the first day,
there was work to be done! As Cat Team Leader, Jen supervised two volunteers in caring for 60 cats: feeding, cleaning,
and socializing the feline charges. Other volunteers went to
work caring for dogs, housed in the same three-warehouse
location.
Instead of sheltering strays, the temporary shelter in
Brooklyn was a haven for pets of displaced families. Loving
guardians visited their pets whenever they were able. The visits were sometimes stressful for the lonely animals - one cat
yowled for an hour after his family departed - so Jen made it
her mission to make the facility feel more like home. “I was
the advocate for the cats in my care, and I quickly figured out
what each of them needed. I set up their crates in a way that
would be more comfortable, making sure they all had a box
to hide in and soft bedding,” Jen says. “I moved one cat’s
blanket into his box and he immediately started purring and
kneading the blanket!” Her enrichment skills, finely honed
at ARF, shone through and were implemented shelter-wide
under her guidance.
The animals weren’t the only ones grateful for Jen and
ARF. “A couple came to visit their pretty calico and thanked
me. They said ‘God bless you for coming out from California
to help the animals.’ It still gives me chills.”
ARF’s disaster relief efforts are only possible because of
generous contributions. Help ARF send disaster relief teams
to care for animals wherever they are needed by donating at
arf.net. “I would do it all again in a heartbeat,” Jen continues. “I love being able to help animals who need my TLC.”

New Beginnings
Stella & Cookie
Stella (the all-black kitten) and Cookie (her tuxedo
sister) are having a ball in their new home!
The bouncy siblings have the run of their new house,
where they run, chase, play, and curl up together, much to
the delight and amusement of their new family. Also of great
amusement to their new family: watching the now 7-month
old girls’ personalities develop and grow. If families are
made of love, then Stella & Cookie’s must be pair-adise!

What HASN’T Milo been up to?! Since he left ARF, the
cuddly little Corgi mix has acquired two cat siblings, Buckwheat
and Blackie, who have shown to be excellent cuddle partners.
His days are filled with an activity roster anyone would be
jealous of: hikes, fetch, walks, tug-of-war, splashes in his
doggie pool, trips to doggie daycare - and lots of snuggles!
He’s a “truly beloved member of the family” according to his
new mom. Say it with us now: aww!
Camp ARF changes lives
Before Winter Camp, we received a phone call from a mother
registering her first-grade twins. Her
son was a natural animal lover, but
her daughter Katie was another story. For reasons she couldn’t explain,
Katie was nervous to even approach
a dog. She hoped a session at Camp
ARF with understanding counselors
and hands-on learning would make
Katie feel more comfortable.
As they say, mom knows best!
While Katie was initially apprehensive, by the end of the first day she
had greeted a visiting Pet Hug Pack
dog with little hesitation. By graduation, Katie’s fears were far away
and she excitedly posed with her

Fostering Life
Bill and Easter share a cuddle
More than 773 of the animals ARF
saved this year spent time in a foster
home. “By fostering, I can help save
lives and help a lot more animals find a
loving home,” says Bill Coaker, on his
decision to be a foster parent to ARF
animals. “I feel like I make a positive
difference.”
When ARF rescued 12-week old
“Easter” from a public shelter, she won
us over with her happy purr and curious nature. But after a few days we
noticed her eyes were perpetually red,
weeping, and squinting. Easter suffered from an uncommon birth defect
where a portion of the eyelid is missing
causing fur to irritate the cornea. One
of ARF’s veterinary partners, Dr. Deborah S. Friedman, generously offered
to perform eye surgery, and we placed
Easter with Bill so he could keep her
comfortable during her recovery.
Many kitties would be overwhelmed by a new environment and
a sensitive surgery, but spunky little
Easter took it all in stride with the help
of her patient foster dad. Though she
needed pain medication and wore an
e-collar to protect her eyes for several
weeks, it didn’t stop her from cuddling,
batting at toys, and tearing around the
house on wild chases, amazing Bill
with her enthusiasm and zest for life.
“Fostering is an incredibly beautiful experience,” Bill explains. “I put a
lot of effort into teaching trust and providing for my fosters’ care. In return,
I gain their loving companionship, affection, and I see their happiness.
We are so grateful for ARF’s foster
families who allow us to rescue newborn puppies, kittens, and special animals we could not otherwise care for in
