Jeanne’s Father:
Family was in Samarai Class
(Next down from nobility)
His dad was a judge
They owned lots of land in
Japan
Ko was Jeanne’s Father’s name.
He was the Oldest Son: Jeanne
describes him as “Spoiled” and “Proud”
Would inherit more being the first son.
Economy crashed so his family bought
and ran a “teahouse” (nightclub with
food and entertainment)
AGE 14-17:Ko was in military
school training to be an officer
ASHAMED OF THE
TEAHOUSE…..BELOW THEIR
STATUS
Quit military school and came
to America
Ko left Japan and didn’t
communicate with his family
again.
How long had it been?
35 YEARS!!!!
He said he would
contact them when
he had “made it
big.”
IN AMERICA:
Worked for a family in Idaho as a
houseboy for 5 years.
Learned MANY different jobs (made
dentures for people in Manzanar)
Perfected his English
Went to college to study to be a lawyer,
but didn’t finish
JEANNE’S MOTHER:
Family were farmers in Spokane,
Washington.
She was the only daughter.
“Promised” to marry a son of a
rich farmer.
BUT THEN SHE MET KO…(not a
good story). Dun, dun, dun…
She was 17 and
he was 25!!
They met at the produce
market. Her family was selling
vegetables and he was
unloading trucks for a job.
They ran away several times
together.
Both “rebellious”.
Got married.
He worked as a cook in a
restaurant.
She worked as a dietician and
nurse.
Mother more educated/better
job.
Both Hard working.
Dad had “hard luck” with jobs
TEN children (Mother’s main job)
FATHER ALWAYS WANTED TO
CONTACT HIS FAMILY AND TELL
THEM HE WAS SUCCESSFUL AT
SOMETHING.
Whatever he did had flourish (ch. 6
59).
Very classy, fashionable, had
“style”
Feet were frostbitten in prison in
North Dakota…reason for the cane.
Helped interview older Japanese
prisoners in prison
