Mary, our Mother, on Mother’s Day
Welcome!
"When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there
whom he loved, he said to his
mother, "Woman, behold,
your son." Then he said to
the disciple, "Behold, your
mother." And from that hour
the disciple took her into his
home. (John 19:26, 27)
Welcome one another, then,
as Christ welcomed you,
for the glory of God.
Romans 15:7

Maybe you grew up Catholic.
Maybe you think of yourself as Catholic.
Maybe you haven’t been to church in a while.
Or, you are worried that you won’t be welcomed here.
And maybe it feels awkward
and scary to take that first step.
Question. Doubts. Yearning, but not sure for what.
We get it. We’ve been there. Now we are here.
Maybe God is calling you, too. Just as you are.
Welcome home.

This tender scene speaks to
us of the depth of the Love
which inspires, informs and
transforms all human love,
the Love Incarnate who
gives us His Mother.
Prayer to the Mother of the Lord for all mothers:
Mary, on this day when we honor all mothers, we turn to
you. We thank the Lord whom you serve for the great gift
of motherhood. Never has it been known that
anyone who sought your Intercession was left unaided
by grace.
Dear Mother, thank you for your "Yes" to the invitation of
the angel which brought heaven to earth and changed
human history. You opened yourself to God's word and
the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
Dear mother, intercede for all of our mothers. Ask your
Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love
so that they could join with you in giving their own "Fiat."
May they find daily strength to say yes to the call to the
sacrificial love- the very heart of the vocation of
motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of
great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son.
On this Mothers day, Mother of the Word Incarnate, pray
for us who have recourse to you... Amen.
Blessings on this Mothers’ Day
As we celebrate Mothers’ Day this weekend, we
acknowledge our mothers and all those who have cared
for us with motherly love.
We thank you for the years of nurturing children, giving
them faith and helping them to know God. You have
taught us many of life’s lessons and how to love and
how to sacrifice for others and to be compassionate.
May the Lord bless you with the graces you need and
help you to know how precious you are in His
eyes. May the Lord continue to give you the strength,
courage, compassion and peace of Mary, the model of
faith.
We all love you so much.

Pentecost Sunday— June 4
Multi-Lingual Lectors wanted!
Everyday Stewardship
Our parish
is made up
of many
peoples of
different
nations and
cultures; let
us rejoice in
the fact that
all of us, from different parts of the world, are one in
Christ Jesus.
Over the past years, the Lector Ministry has encouraged
the members of St. James community to live out
Pentecost by reading two line petitions in the language of
their ancestors and dressing in their native, ancestral or
traditional clothing at Masses on Pentecost.
If you speak a second language, we encourage you to
participate at this year's Pentecost celebration on
Sunday, June 4th
We are looking for four different languages at each
Mass. Contact Samantha Pierce with your choice of
language and Mass—[email protected],
310.371.1932.
To proudly portray our cultural diversity, we encouraged
all St. James parishioners to dress for Pentecost liturgy
in their ancestral dress.
What do you think is the value of your stewardship?
Do you believe that through your actions both great and
small that God can touch people, heal them, and change
their lives? Too often we can mistakenly assume that
what we do, say, or offer can have little effect in the
grand scheme of life. We are simply poor sinners in need
of
salvation so what could we do anyway?
Jesus speaks very powerfully to what can be done by
those who believe in him and follow him. He says in
John's Gospel, "Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater
ones than these, because I am going to the Father."
Greater ones than these? Think about all the miracles of
Jesus recorded in sacred Scripture. You and I can do
works greater than those?
St. Teresa of Avila said, "Christ has no body now on
earth but yours." We are Christ to a world that needs him.
It is the Christ in you that responds to the Christ in me.
If it were only you alone going about doing good works
and deeds, then your stewardship would amount to little.
But if you bear the name Christian, and you approach
your discipleship seriously, you can truly do greater
things. If you understand your stewardship as a way that
Jesus works in our world, then this way of life, cultivating
and sharing your gifts at every turn, becomes more valuable than all the gold in the world.

Catechism Q&A
Q: The Catechism of the Catholic Church draws on
the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition
and teaching, and the lives of the saints.
On this solid foundation of faith, the Catechism offers a
positive, coherent, contemporary map for our own spiritual catholic journey.
We're at letter U in this series of alphabetically generated
topics in the catechism. What subjects, if any, are listed
beginning with letter U?
A: There are two subjects beginning with letter U;
Unity and Understanding. Let's stand united and go with
the subject imparted as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit:
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of
the Lord. Map out your harmonious possibilities amid this
realm of virtuous understanding in your catechism.
For Matthew Kelly, the problem of resistance in Resisting
Happiness is that it is an enemy, an obstacle standing
between you and the person
God created you to be. In
Chapter 1, called "Resistance",
Kelly starts off by proposing a
better understanding of the dynamics of resistance by naming
it, analyzing it in its many forms,
and presenting ways to conquer
it.
Gospel Reflection
"Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do."
What were the works that Jesus did? Miracles, sometimes, but what were the essence of these miracles?
Caring for the sick, comforting the sorrowful, feeding the
hungry ... much of Jesus' ministry was spent in carrying
out what we call the works of mercy. But he did more
than that; he also preached and publicly shared the good
news, he fostered fellowship and community, and he
prayed. All of this makes a kind of plan of action for us
as Christians. As Jesus says today, if we truly
believe in him, we will follow in his footsteps and do
these same things.
What this all suggests is that belief itself--having faith,
being Christian--is only part of the picture. Jesus expects
us to take this faith and put it into concrete, practical action. Apparently this goes hand in hand with real faith. If
actions don't follow, then faith is not being lived to its
fullest.
This of course presents a real challenge. Our lives are
busy and our plates are full, just with the tasks and demands of daily existence. It can seem like a burden to
serve others, to share the Gospel, to be actively
involved in a faith community, to find time to pray.
But these are meant to be priorities for true disciples of
Christ. And as many will testify, when we sincerely ask
God to help us get our priorities in order, he has a way of
miraculously multiplying our time. Somehow, we find the
opportunities right before us to follow God's will and
bring our faith to life.
That simple prayer of asking for help may be where we
need to start. The first step is not so much to fill our calendar as to fill our hearts, or just to pray that God will fill
our hearts, with the desire to "do the works" of Jesus.
Thank you Holy Spirit for your
gifts!
Looking for understanding?
Here at St. James, you are
encouraged to read your catechism, and to read your
spiritually enriching books of faith.
The Lord be with you!

Deeper Understanding
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, God's special possession, that you may declare
the praises of him who called you out of darkness into
his wonderful light”
.. the very aim of all God’s gracious manifestations of
Himself is that the men who apprehend them should go
forth into the world and show Him for what He is.
Now that aim may be, and often has been, put so as to
present an utterly hard and horrible notion. That God’s
glory is His only motive may be so stated as to mean
nearly an Almighty Selfishness, which is far liker the
devil than God.
People in old days did not always recognize the danger
that lay in such a representation of what we call God’s
motive for action. But if you think for a moment about
this statement, all that appears hard and repellent drops
clean away from it, and it turns out to be another way of
saying, ‘God is Love.’
Because, what is there more characteristic of love than
an earnest desire to communicate itself and to be
manifested and beheld? And what is it that God reveals
to the world for His own glory but the loftiest and most
wondrous compassion, that cannot be wearied out, that
cannot be provoked, and the most forgiving
Omnipotence, that, in answer to all men’s wanderings
and rebellions, only seeks to draw them to itself?
Parenting isn’t easy and it may sometimes feel
overwhelming.
Throw in the internet, social networks, computers and
mobile devices – and things can often seem impossible.

Archdiocesan Council of Catholic
Women Meeting and Talk
Fr. Patrick Torres will discuss "A Journey with Mother
Teresa" at St. John Fisher on Tuesday, May 23, 2017.
In 1993, Fr. Torres joined the Missionaries of Charity
Fathers, founded by Mother Teresa. As an MC Father,
he had the joy of spending time with St. Mother Teresa,
meeting St. John Paul II, serving the people of God in
18 countries, and serving in three World Youth Days.
Fr. Torres is now at St. Lawrence Martyr Church.
That is what God wants to be known for.
Is that hard and repellent? Does that make Him a great
tyrant, who only wants to be abjectly worshipped?
No; it makes Him the very embodiment and perfection of
the purest love.
Why does He desire that He should be known? for any
good that it does to Him? No; except the good that even
His creatures can do to Him when they gladden His
paternal heart by recognizing Him for what He is, the
Infinite Lover of all souls.
The day begins at 9:30 with our speaker, followed by
Mass and Lunch, and concludes at 1:30.
This event is hosted by the ACCW.
Please mail your check for $10. per person to
St. John Fisher Catholic Church 5448 Crest Rd.,
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.
St. James parishioner Nancy Cebra, 424.558.8183.
Everything we have is
a gift from God,
including our ability to
earn money.
But the reason why He desires, most of all, that the light
of His character may pour into every heart is because
He would have every heart gladdened and blessed for
ever by that received and believed light.
So the hard saying that God’s own glory is His supreme
end melts into ‘God is Love.’
The Infinite desires to communicate Himself, that by the
communication men may be blessed.

sharing from our first fruits that we are able to fulfill
the mission that God has entrusted to us –
