Write Your Own Preamble
The U.S. Constitution is one of the most important documents in American history. It lists all the basic
rules for how our nation is to be governed. The writers of the Constitution began the document with
a preamble, or mission statement:
e the People of the United States, in Order to form a more
perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide
for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure
the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and
establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Now that you have read the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, write a “preamble” or mission
statement for your classroom. Before you write, think about the overall goals you and your
classmates would like to accomplish this school year.
