The Objectives of
Rotary International:
 The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
 High ethical standards in
business and professions;
the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful
occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve society.
 The application of the
ideal of service in each
Rotarian’s personal, business and community life.
 The advancement of international understanding,
goodwill, and peace
through a world fellowship
of business and professional persons united in
the ideal of
service.
Another grey Friday morning, a hint
of spring in the
area, as Point West
Rotarians gathered at the
newly named Red Lion Hotel Sacramento at Arden Village, as Mr. Excitement Buddy Boy Bud Ackerman rang in the 30th meeting of the
23rd term of the Rotary Club of Point
West, Sacramento
Bob Willett led us in the Pledge.
Guy Heilman missed the meeting due
to that nasty cold bug going along so
Trish Harrington flashed us all back to
third grade, as Trish, Bea Maurer,
Mary Lyn Kagan, and Michelle Orrock led a round robin of ―Row Row
Row Your Boat.‖ By the way if you
Google Worst Third Grade Memory,
this gem pops up:
Our invocator was Amadeo Romero…but wait…Tim Maliepaard sprang to the stage in
Amo’s stead with an adlib, but
very good prayer
thanking the
Lord, remembering and praying
for our sons and
daughters in Iraq,
and closing with ―Here’s To
Festa!!‖
Head Table
The Head Table featured Lou
Fifer and Lori Curry, who
would soon engage in a
2X2, Richard Prater and
guest speaker and fellow Rotarian Tom Johnson. There
was some speculation about
why Prater was in a suit, as
he only is so attired when
getting married or is in court
getting sued. But there was
general agreement that Prater
cleans up nicely!
― in the third grade (or second) my
friend stabbed his eye out and the eye
ball was just hanging out of the socket.
Boy was that funny!‖ (UGH!!!)

Speaker—Tom Johnson
Dapper Dick Prater introduced our guest
speaker, Tom Johnson. Tom was a
prosecutor of 22
years, of which 4
was as a federal
prosecutor and the
rest with the Sacramento county DA’s
office. He first prosecuted lesser offenses
such as DUI and theft, and moved up the
crime pole to more severe cases, eventually prosecuting rapists and murderers.
Tom and his wife Maria have four children, two in private school, and a third
pointed in that direction, possibly the reasons he has left the DA’s office for private and more lucrative private practice.
Tom shared that
 As an attorney, you have to be able
to win your cases;
 You have to work the case you
have and
believe in
your client
 Trial work
is like
hand to
hand street
fighting.
 You have to be committed and do
the really hard work it takes to do
justice
 Tom made the statement that there
Fireside Chats—
ARE people in this world who are
just truly evil.
Tom shared a number of stories including
one about a very brave little ten year old
girl whose testimony put her father, who
had murdered her mother, into jail; and
Tom opined on
capital punishment, three
strikes and more.
Although Tom
has been with
PWRE a relatively short time he is going to be a tremendous presence in our club!!
President Bud presented Tom, who is his
neighbor, a bottle of Madrona cabernet and
offered to drink it with him Friday evening.
Bowling Bash!!
Drew Houghton – Bowling Bash
March 15th
Drew looked resplendent in his bowling
shirt! It’s March 15, 4:30 to 6:30, no-host
dinner afterwards organized by Tim Maliepaard at Olivers. All frames of 8 or
more will be scored as strikes, and there’s
even a chance for Cori Badgley to have a
perfect game and she has never bowled
before!!
 Bowling is a sport that should be right
down your alley.
 If you can't hear a pin drop, then

something is definitely wrong with
your bowling.
Future Queen Charlene Drabant
announced that for persons still
needing to attend a Fireside Chat
we will have a morning makeup for
―laggards‖.
The last Fireside Chats were held
on February 26th.
 Our small town used to have a bowl-

ing alley, but somebody stole the pin.
 "Something is wrong with my bowling
delivery," Tom said gutturally.
 I'll never bowl with him again. After
he got a strike, he spiked the ball.
 If our town didn't have bowling,
there'd be no culture at all.
 I go bowling once every four years to
make sure I still hate it.

Lou Fifer
and Lori
Curry
Lori on Lou:
From the time he was born Lou
wanted to be a pilot. He realized his
dream and became a pilot in the US
Navy. After an illustrious military
career Lou has stayed busy, has visited
26 countries and lists nineteen jobs on
his resume, (even more than Drew
Houghton). Lou has been married to
Joy for fifteen years. Q: Why is Lou
so passionate about donating blood?
A: Lou’s first wife tragically died of
cancer and Lou fought the difficult
fight with her. Blood is the gift of life,
and Lou has donated 68 gallons!! Lou
collects and restores cars and bicycles,
and spends four nights a week playing
in one of three different bands. Lou
may have inherited the music gene
from his father who played for Lawrence Welk.
Lou on Lori:
Lori was born in Vancouver and her
Dad flew for the Canadian Air Force
in WW II. After the war they settled
in the Arden
area in Sacramento
where her
Mom, now
widowed,
still lives.
Lori was an
Ag major at UC Davis and naturally
went into retail clothing as a purchaser
in San Francisco after college. In 1986
Lori followed in her father’s footsteps
by opening a State Farm Agency
which she still owns. Lori is a skier
and a hiker and claims to have walked
on the Sacramento River. If you’re not
in good hands now, just give Lori a
call at her agency.

Gordon Gerwig returned from a trip
to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. He
presented El Presidente (that’s Spanish for
President), aka La gran agitación / zozobra
(Mr. Excitement) with a toreador hat.
Gordon did not present El Presidente with
the rest of the bullfighter outfit because he
could not find
size MH
(Macho Hombre), also a couple of bottles of hot
sauce made a plant that also manufactures liquid explosives, and the products share similar ingredients.
