There are a couple of important stats I am proud
to share with readers. Throughout the first three
months:
1) Student attendance continues to be over 96%.
2) There has only been one suspension.
I believe these stats are a direct response to kids in the school feeling
safe and respected. We are fortunate to have such amazing kids, and excellent staff that care for them each and every day.
I also want to point out that parents, and the community, have been very
supportive, which is extremely helpful, and greatly appreciated.

3rd Annual Movember Madness
Basketball Tournament
On November 29th, Lac du Bonnet Senior School hosted the
third annual fundraiser in the spirit of Movember deemed
Movember Madness. Students had to raise $50 to get the afternoon off from school to participate in a charity basketball
tournament.
More than 60 students, four staff members, and the local
RCMP participated in the tournament raising $575 dollars towards a good cause. One hundred percent of the money will
be donated to Movember Canada which is a charity organization that raises money towards men’s health, specifically prostate cancer.
A special THANK YOU to Mrs. Kaptein and Mrs. Nykoluk and
the rest of the canteen crew for preparing 70 Movemberburger platters for participants and volunteers.

Band Program News
The Lac du Bonnet Senior
School Christmas Band Concert will take place on Thursday, December 12th, 2013 at
7:00 p.m. in the LdBSS Theatre. Band parents and students, please stay tuned for a
letter that will be sent home
shortly with more information.
All LdBSS students, parents,
family members, friends, and
community members are welcome and invited to attend
the concert!
Band parents :
The Lac du Bonnet Senior
School Band Parents’ Association (LdBSSBPA) needs YOU!
We meet once a month to organize fundraisers to support
activities such as overnight
Band trips, festivals, and other
performance opportunities for
the students. Without such
fundraisers, 100% of the cost
of these worthwhile musical
activities falls to the parents.
Whether your child is in grade
7 or grade 12, it is never too
early or too late to start planning ahead, and without your
help, we will not be able to hold
fundraisers or go on cool trips!
The next LdBSSBPA meeting
will be on Tuesday, December
10th, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in the
LdBSS Library. We look forward to seeing you there!
New Report Card Format
The Province has implemented
a mandatory new report card
for all schools in Manitoba.
You may have noticed that
comments have been standardized as well. Teachers now
have to follow the format: a
strength, a challenge, and
‘next steps’/goal.
cards, scheduling and student
data collection.
In addition to the change in report cards and comments, Sunrise School Division also implemented new managerial software for attendance, report
November was a very busy
month with a lot of changes,
but I am very proud to say that
the staff of LdBSS exceeded
expectations. Great work!
New Teacher
For the time being, Mr. Nelson
has taken over for Mr. Young
teaching SS, Geography and
Woods.
He has been working here for a
week, and has proven to be a
good fit. He gets along well with
LdBSS
students, and is passionate
about student growth and curriculum learning.
Please feel free to contact Mr.
Nelson if you have any questions about your son or daughters courses.

and Intramurals!
In the girls' competition hosted in our gym, the LDBSS "B" team finished third in their pool and the "A" team finished in the number one
spot at the end of the day.
A big thank you to the high school students who volunteered as assistant coaches: Riley Peters,
Autumn Kelly, Trentan Tomm; Breeann Brennan, and Jillian Stogran, as well as the staff members who worked with the teams: Mr. Valentonis, Mrs. Pelland, Mrs. Balness, and Mr. Stepanik .
Both of our "A" teams will compete at the divisional championships hosted by LDBSS on Wed.,
December 4 against teams from Springfield Middle School, Powerview, and Pinawa.
INTRAMURALS
Intramural volleyball season has wrapped up and congratulations go out to the "Bears" for their
victories in both the grades 7 to 9 division and the grades 10 to 12 category.
The next intramural activity in the gym at lunch time will be dodgeball and it will be benchball,
starting on December 5th. Staff and students are invited to show up when their house plays
dodgeball at lunch.
Wii at LDBSS
Recently, a Wii system was set up in one
of the classrooms for students to use during lunch times and spares for a different
variety of physical activity. So far, there
have been dance competitions, table tennis matches and
bowling battles. Not only are the students having fun, but
they are finding ways to link technology with physical activity
and are totally engaged in the tasks.

“Mr. Nabe recovered
Outdoor Ed Trip
On October 25th the outdoor Ed class traveled to Pine Point on an
all day hike!
after we found him
shaking high up in a
tree..”
On the way there we stopped for a small tour to see the petroforms.
After finishing that tour we began our 8 km hike. We hiked along
the trail in the forest until we came along a huge mountain of rock that the majority of us decided to climb! After that we continued on the trail over a bridge and
reached our half way point. We all sat down had a bite to eat and attempted to make
a fire! (Mr. Nabe will teach us how in the near future).
During our break period we had a chance to explore the rapids that were near by. We
continued along on our hike coming across a chicken as we followed along the water
side. After a fake bear scare and a few minor accidents, Mr. Nabe recovered after we
found him shaking high up in a tree and continued back to our half way point a little later than scheduled due to the time it took to convince him to come down.
We warmed up a little in the shack and opted for the easy hike back. As we reached
the vehicles everyone was quite exhausted, and ready to head home! All in all it was
a great day with a few lessons learned that we all enjoyed.

Social Justice Club Embarks on
Winter Clothing Campaigne
No one dreams of, or chooses to be homeless and yet it happens to many Manitobans. Did you know
that 28,000 people live in inadequate housing in Winnipeg’s core and on any given night, 353 Winnipeggers sleep in shelters? Or that an unknown number of people sleep outdoors, in cars, abandoned
buildings, or public locations like the airport? (CBC News, May 2012).
LdBSS Social Justice Club is joining with Free the Children’s campaign, “We Won’t Rest” to demystify homelessness through self education and awareness. Until December 18th, we will be collecting
winter clothing for all ages at the school. Adult clothing will then be delivered to Siloam Mission, and
the children’s clothing will go to the United Way’s Koats for Kids Program. Please sort through your
closets and donate any items – coats, ski pants, mitts, scarves, toques or socks that can help keep someone warm this winter!
We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for our local Food Bank to help out over the
Christmas Season. Classrooms will be competing to see who can collect the most items! Again, we
rely on the generosity of our community to help feed the less fortunate of our town and surrounding
area.

ARTSPEAK
Hi, I’m Joelle, I’m in grade 8, and I had the opportunity to go to Junior Artspeak, at Camp Cedar
wood. I went with Payden and Sydney. It was so much fun, it was a great experience, and I’m hoping
to do so again.
This is the first time there has been Junior Artspeak out of 54 sessions. They started Junior
Artspeak because both students and teachers were asking for it to start for middle years.
As I said before there has been 54 sessions. They involved: visual art, movement, mime,
dance, theater, song writing, storytelling, mask making, puppetry, drumming, and writing. They only
pick interested or talented students that are willing to participate in visual art, music, movement, and
theater. It is an intense but fun 12 hour day.
It was all started 10 years ago by a man named Anthony Steffes who was a teacher at Whitemouth School. Now, he works with 4 professional artists in each session.
Students from grades 9-12 can go earn a credit for every 2 artspeak sessions That’s the
backround of Artspeak. Thanks for reading!

Congratulations to former LdBSS student Taylor Peters. Taylor left LdBSS to pursue AAAA Volleyball
at Miles Mac Collegiate in Winnipeg. Taylor was voted to the Graduating Class All-Star Team, and
helped lead her team to a 9-1 record, and beat Dakota Collegiate in the Provincial Semi-Finals.
Congratulations Taylor!

Take Our Kids to Work Day
The grade 9 students all participated in the national, “Take Our Kids to Work Day”, on November
6, 2013. This program allows students to see the skills required in today’s workplace, and also to gain
an appreciation for their parent’s role in making a living and supporting their family. It also allows students to explore career options in practical ways. Many thanks to the supportive individuals and local
businesses that provided placements for students that did not have a host. This proved to be a very successful day and it helped students make the connection between education and their future.
Royal Canadian Legion
The Royal Canadian Legion holds a poster and literary contest every year. Many students in our
school participate to honour and remember the sacrifices and contributions of our veterans, and those
who died serving their country.
Volunteers
Parents and community members are always welcome to volunteer at the school. If you have an
interest, hobby or passion that you would be willing to share with the students, please call Mrs. Osis at
the school. The subject matter is endless, and we encourage you to connect with our youth. You can be
sure there is at least one student who shares the same interests as you.
Grad News
The grade 12 graduation is on Friday, June 20, 2014. Fundraising is in full swing with chocolates
and 50/50 tickets. Grad clothing and all fundraisers are available from Mrs. Osis. Thank you for supporting our grads!

Volume 1, Issue 1
This and That
Manitoba Theater for Young People
MTYP performed at our school on Friday, November 15, 2013. The play was about ‘Amanda.’
Amanda was a regular teenager that hung around a good group of friends. However, ‘recently’,
Amanda’s grades started to slip. She also started to miss school a lot. What’s going on with Amanda
only happens behind a closed, locked door, so it may be hard to figure out.
The students found out that Amanda suffered from an eating disorder. Just like people who suffer from addictions to drugs, alcohol and steroids, she feels out of control and powerless to stop what is
happening to her. The message was clear—eating disorders are REAL and could affect those you are
close to.
Artspeak
Artspeak is a program of hands-on, integrated study involving all of the arts, including visual art,
music, dance, theater, storytelling and writing. Artspeak has been successfully operating as an integrated arts credit for senior-arts talented students for over 10 years.
The first session was held at Camp Cedarwood from November 4-7, 2013. This session was titled, “All about Animals”. The talented students that attended were Savannah Hyra, Kendra Hiebert,
Kathleen Harland, Alana Short and Christin Hall.
The next session was November 25-28, and was all about faces. At this session the students explored facial possibilities through theatre, visual art, masks, drawing, music and dance. The talented
students that attended were: Alex Baril, Kylie Lussier, Savannah Hyra, Madyson Shauman and Nicole
Oucharek.
