Beneficial Insects – Joining in on the Battle of Garden Pests, October 25-2:30 p.m.
Horticulturist and former greenhouse grower, Kelly Allsup, will give instructions on using beneficial insects in the garden
setting. She will demonstrate which beneficial insects to choose for which pest, how to release beneficial insects, where to
order them from and tips on making them thrive. We will also be looking at beneficial and pest insects under the

county. Youth interested in becoming a 4-H member (ages 8-18 as of September 1, 2012) or Cloverbud member (ages 57 as of September 1, 2012) may contact the University of Illinois Extension Office in their county for more information.
Robotics SPIN Club Kick-Off Meeting, October 29-7:00 p.m.
Join us Monday, October 29 at the Unity Community Center, 632 Orlando Ave., Normal (two buildings behind the Pizza
Hut) to check out the formation of a Unity-wide Robotics SPIN Club. Youth ages 8 -18 and parents/guardians are
encouraged to attend. You need not be a current 4-H member in Livingston, McLean, and Woodford to attend.
McLean County 4-H Recognition of Excellence Program, November 4-4:00 p.m.
Awards will be presented to 4-Hers for the past year’s 4-H accomplishments. The program will be held at the Asmark

Poverty Simulation November 9, 2012-5 to 8:30 p.m.
University of Illinois is facilitating a Poverty Simulation for Illinois State University’s Dean of Students Office Diversity
Advocacy. This powerful, hands-on, 2-hour simulation is an emotional experience of how it feels to “step inside” poverty
and live one-month on limited resources and an abundance of stress. If you are interested in participating, space is

Diabetic Clinic-Cooking with Herbs and Spice, October 18-1:30 p.m.
Jenna Smith, Nutrition and Wellness Educator will discuss nutrition, portion control and how to make smart food choices
for better health. This clinic will be held at the Woodford Extension office, 109 E. Eureka Ave., Eureka and is open to the
public. This session is offered free with no registration necessary.
Reading Food Labels: Tips If You Have Diabetes, October 23-6:30 p.m.
If you or your family member has diabetes, you know that reading food labels is important. University of Illinois Nutrition
and Wellness Extension Educator, Jenna Smith, will break down the parts of a food label and help you decide whether a
certain food fits into your diabetic meal plan or not. This program is free and open to the public. Please contact the Eureka
Library at 309-467-2922 to register.
Fresh Fare: Simple Substitutions, November 14-6:00 p.m.
Many people already know that applesauce can be substituted for oil in that box brownie mix, but what other substitutions
are there? Jenna Smith, Nutrition and Wellness Extension Educator, will offer tips on how to substitute certain ingredients
to make your recipes healthier. This program, from 6-7 p.m., is open to the public. A suggested donation of $5.00 will be
given to Evenglow. To register, please call Norma at the Evenglow Inn at 815-842-9040 by November 13.

International Country of Study-Trinidad & Tobago, October 18, 2012
Learn the customs and the foods of this unique area! This meeting will be held at the McLean Extension auditorium.

Woodford County HCE Cultural Enrichment Program, October 23-7:00 p.m. Tales from the Women on the Western Trails will be presented by Don Chamberlain. Stories of women who
experienced the long trip on the Oregon Tail and Mormon Trail will be shared. This program will be held at the
Woodford County Farm Bureau building and is open to the public and free of charge. Register by calling Elaine Hodel at

Cooking From Your Cabinet, December 7-1:30 p.m.
This will be a very practical lesson to learn how to stock your cabinets with staples to be able to cook creatively and
economically. "Cooking From Your Cabinet" will be presented by Jenna Smith, Nutrition and Wellness educator.
