Golden Gate Senior Center
Naples - When the Golden Gate Senior Center
opened in November 2014, life dramatically
changed for Tony and Dee Plane. Living on a fixed
income, they were limited in what they could
do each day and what access they had to others
beyond their immediate neighbors.

One of the key programs the center provides is a nutritious hot meal for more than
60 people each weekday. This free meal may not seem like much to some, but it
makes a big difference when a senior on a fixed income must choose between
needed medication and food. Additionally, there is the Meals for Hope Food Pantry
which helps about 120 additional families a week.
As important as the food programs are, the Golden Gate Senior Center is so much
more. On any given day there are activities to keep even the most ambitious busy.
From a sewing group or exercise class to bingo or dominoes, the seniors are engaged.
On other days, there are offerings for computer training or English as a Second
Language along with financial literacy, employment assistance, health screenings,
birthday parties and much more. Recently, the center hosted a luau which included

entertainers who provided song and dance.
Highest distinction awarded
Venice - The leading charity evaluator in America
designated Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. as
“exceptional” and awarded the agency their coveted
and highest four-star rating for sound fiscal
management and commitment to accountability and
transparency. Charity Navigator highlights efficient,
ethical and open charities to provide
donors with essential information
needed to give them greater
confidence in the charitable choices

they make. This is the 12th time Catholic Charities has
earned this top distinction in the last 14 years.
“Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates
that your organization adheres to good governance
and other best practices that minimize the chance
of unethical activities and consistently executes its
mission in a fiscally responsible way,” stated John P.
Dugan, Founder and Chairman of
the Board of Charity Navigator in a
letter to Catholic Charities.

A free hot meal is provided at the center each weekday.

On-site referral services are available to ensure seniors
are receiving financial and medical benefits along
with many support groups. A new effort began this
summer with Catholic Charities coordinating a six-week
mentoring program, where teens are brought in and
paired with seniors.
The Golden Gate Senior Center Program Director
Tatiana Fortune said each of these programs, and the
entire concept of the center is a wonderful example of a
number of community agencies coming together to help
seniors in need.
“There was a clear need for the seniors in Golden
Gate,” Fortune explained. “Different non-profit service
agencies got together and created a wonderful program
which is geared toward providing assistance for low
to moderate income seniors. That assistance comes in
many forms.”
With all of the community partners and the support of
donors large and small, there is always more that can
be done, Fortune explained. “Our biggest challenge now
is making sure we don’t have anyone on our wait list
for services. We are limited in what we can do by the
funding we receive. This is offset by the volunteers who
help us each day but this only goes so far.”
There are 40 regular volunteers who help with the daily
activities and run several of the classes and programs,
including serving hot meals, working in the food pantry
or just sitting and talking with the seniors. “Right now
we are trying to create an atmosphere where those who
come here feel right at home,” Fortune said. “There is so
much potential for more and I know everyone will come
together to make it happen.”
The center is bright and uplifting, giving everyone a
positive feel when they enter. A garden was recently
built with donations from the Naples Botanical Garden,
and it will soon have a fountain at its center, providing a
peaceful and relaxing outdoor spot for those who seek
some quiet.
Fortune explained that everything in the Golden
Gate Senior Center was done with the goal in mind
of helping combat the isolation many seniors feel in
the community. “We worked hard to develop a positive
environment where the guests feel comfortable and can
be active in ways they thought were long past,” she said.
Tony and Dee Plane have been married for 65 years and
explained that they never thought their senior years
would be so active. “This is a wonderful place. We love
it here,” Dee Plane said. “There is so much to do and
everyone is so pleasant and sweet. It is our home away
from home.”
The Golden Gate Senior Center is located at 4898
Coronado Parkway in Naples, and is open Monday to
Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information
please visit www.CollierSeniorResources.org or
call Tatiana Fortune at 239-252-4534.

“Catholic Charities is vigilant in its efforts to properly administer the hard-earned
dollars of our donors,” said Peter Routsis-Arroyo, CEO of Catholic Charities, Diocese of
Venice, Inc. “This positive assessment of our fiscal health should provide our patrons
assurance in our ability to manage their charitable gifts.”
The four-star review of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. is available on the

Without a will that is valid in Florida, you are at the
mercy of the court system as to how your estate, small

a rigid set of rules, called the laws of descent and

You need to be certain that your will is valid according

Knights fill wish list
and support seniors
Volunteer
Fort Myers - Outreach efforts from the Knights of
Columbus in the Diocese of Venice has made a big
difference in the lives of six seniors who are now
direct beneficiaries of their benevolence. They received
new wheelchairs.
Responding to the Wish List in a previous edition of this
newsletter, a group of Knights coordinated the effort
to get the wheelchairs delivered to the Senior Support
Program of Catholic Charities. The wheelchairs will offer
the seniors a measure of independence, according to
Program Director Alice Del Valle.
“This is such a tremendous gift,” Del Valle said. “There
are many things people take for granted and mobility is
one of them. These wheelchairs will go to great use for
people who desperately need them.”
The Knights tapped into the little-known Global
Wheelchair Mission of the Knights of Columbus. This
effort started in 2003, and included the purchase of
wheelchairs in bulk and delivers them by sea containers

people that are so critical
to the efficient operation of
Catholic Charities, Diocese

volunteers and they afford
us the ability to do more for
our clients.
Thank you to all of our volunteers who inspire us
by giving time to those who are less fortunate.
Without your commitment to helping our programs

we would not be able to offer quality assistance
to the poor and at risk in our communities of
Southwest Florida. You are an integral part of our
mission to serve all in need regardless of race,

In the coming months, Catholic Charities will have
several happenings held throughout the diocese that
directly support our work. The proceeds from these
fundraisers are vital and provide us the capacity
to serve those who come to Catholic Charities
requesting help.
We invite anyone interested in contributing their
time and talent to Catholic Charities to contact us.
We are always in need of volunteers, especially for
our fundraising events. Please consider being a
