History of Numbers
As early as 1800 BC, people in ancient
Egypt were writing fractions using
hieroglyphs.
In China in 200 BC, positive numbers were
represented by red rods and negative numbers by
black.
One of the earliest examples of the rules of arithmetic
dealing with negative numbers appears in India in
620 AD. Negative numbers were called debts and
positive numbers called fortunes.
A debt subtracted from zero is a fortune.
A fortune subtracted from zero is a debt.
The product or quotient of two debts is one fortune.
The product or quotient of a debt and a fortune is a debt.
