FROM RABBI PAUL…
Earlier this year, Temple Avodat Shalom undertook a "Values
and Vision Campaign." Guided by our trustee Annette Lieb, we
addressed six different areas of need within our congregation (1) Spiritual, (2) Educational, (3) Membership/Social, (4)
Leadership, (5) Financial, (6) Social Justice. We formed small
groups of members who were willing to participate in one or two
discussions and share their insights (addressing congregational
strengths and areas for growth) on these themes. Then, on a
Sunday morning in April, we held a Vision and Value Mall during
Java Nagila, which was attended by nearly one hundred
members of our community. We are grateful to all of our
members who shared their insight and vision as part of this
important process and to the chairs of each of these groups Michele Norton, Fred Weinberg, Lauren LoSchiavo, Brett Norton,
Peggy Schneider, and Robin Roland Levy.
We received over 450 comments related to the strengths and
areas for potential growth in our congregation. As some
comments were duplicated, Annette and I sat down to collate the
data, and we were left with over 350 comments (106 remarks
about our strengths, and 248 comments and constructive ideas
about areas for growth, just to be precise). We identified the
most common remarks and presented our findings to the board.
A common joke asks the question, "How do you eat an
elephant?" The response is "One mouthful at a time." To be fair,
our process of strengthening Temple Avodat Shalom will take
many, many years. Using the guidance and input of our Board
of Directors, we were able to identify our first 13 goals, and once
we complete these tasks, we will return to our findings, and
address other needs in our community. Our focus in the coming
months will address:
I.
Communication
•
•
Investigating "group texting" programming for which
members can "opt-in" or "opt-out." (This will help
members to feel more connected regarding opportunities/events in the congregation and provide
"short-form" communication, which is being requested
by a large subset of our membership.)
Website/Phone Capabilities - Our members want an
easier, more technologically driven way to sign up/
register for activities than "printing a form and sending it
back" (I would come to something if it wasn't so hard to
sign up we heard repeatedly). We are looking to offer
clearer information regarding rentals, donation
opportunities, etc.
•
Clarifying TAS Mission Statement - We are hoping that
someone will review and rewrite the mission statement of
TAS, more clearly communicating the values of our
congregation, and the return on investment in one's
membership
•
Improving local publicity/visibility

II.Financial Commitment
•
Clarifying and simplifying donation opportunities and being more specific about where the money we
raise will be going)
•
Publicizing underwriting/sponsorship opportunities
•
Creating clear and present bequest and estate planning program
III. Caring/Connection
•
Introducing a Caring Committee - to reach out after life cycle events, shiva, foster opportunities for
members to reach out, let them know how outreach is available to them (members offering rides, etc.);
offer more care for elderly in our community
•
Offering more home hospitality - Shabbat and other holiday meals shared by congregants
IV. Spiritual/Educational
•
More Jewish literacy options and more education on connecting spiritually, offering different classes at
different times (daytimes, evenings, Sundays) - offering side-by-side learning with kids and parents
together
•
Considering earlier service times on Friday nights (per request of congregants)
•
Offering babysitting services/children educational opportunities so that parents can attend
Shabbat morning services
•
Introducing congregational participation in bar/bat mitzvah Shabbat morning services, perhaps by
form of an aliyah to the Torah, or other congregant celebrations/life cycle moments (baby namings,
personal blessings), that demonstrate the value of community and that bar/bat mitzvah is part of a
larger communal experience and celebration
In order for us to achieve these goals, we need "all hands on deck." We don't need "someone else." We
need not only your vision and your ideas, but also your participation. One comment in the campaign said, "We
members need to be more responsive." I know how busy everyone is, I know of the pressures that are on all of
our families, and the limited time that we have to offer and participate in our spiritual journeys, but I know from
talking to our dedicated volunteers and regular attendees, that they get something indescribable from having an
active and participatory Jewish life, and by giving back - of their time and other resources - to Temple Avodat
Shalom.
Help us bring our ideas and visions into concrete and lasting realities that will benefit all of us at TAS for
many years to come.
On Friday November 11, we have the pleasure of welcoming Rabbi Dr. Gary Zola, Executive Director of the
American Jewish Archives at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Zola
was one my professors during my time at HUC and is an expert on the American Jewish history. Dr. Zola will
be the inaugural speaker in our new “Rabbi Selig Salkowitz Distinguished Speaker Series.” Rabbi Salkowitz,
our distinguished colleague, has offered a generous contribution to our community to enable us to fund significant
and interesting speakers for our congregation.
The series is jointly shared with Temple Israel Jewish Community Centre in Ridgewood and their members
will join us on Friday, November 11, at 7:30 pm when we welcome Dr. Zola to Temple Avodat Shalom. The
following morning, Saturday, November 12 at 10 am, we will meet at Temple Israel for Shabbat services. Dr.
Zola will present another lecture following Shabbat services.
I hope you will join us, and members of Temple Israel as we welcome Dr. Zola and honor Rabbi Salkowitz’s
thoughtfulness and overwhelming generosity.
With warm regards,
Rabbi Paul

FROM THE PRESIDENT
I am a first generation American, on my father’s side. My father was born in Frankfurt,
Germany, in 1924. When he was 14, just one year past his bar mitzvah, my father was a
witness to Kristallnacht. After that night of broken glass, in November 1938, my
grandparents were finally convinced they needed to get out of Germany. A distant cousin in
Philadelphia, whom they had never met, applied for a visa for them, and declared himself as
the family’s support until they were able to support themselves, paving their way to the United
States. That thin thread, which ultimately led to the fact that I exist, has informed my entire
life.
Joel and I joined this synagogue, which was then known as Temple Sholom, 24 years ago this fall, in 1992.
We came here, like most of you, as a family looking to belong to a community where we could have a spiritually
uplifting experience as well as a high quality Jewish education for our sons. We noticed that there were many
other families with young children, as well as many warm and welcoming members. Once we joined, after having
been so involved at our last congregation, we made up our minds that we would not get so involved here. We
would just come to services and bring our kids to Hebrew School. We would be stealth members. I’m not so
sure that has really worked out for us!
This community has supported us through many challenging times, including when Aaron, who is an officer
in the Marines Corps, was deployed to Afghanistan. We feel an obligation to be there for others, as they have
been there for us. That obligation is something we feel good about, and it is not a burden to us. Thin threads,
the same as were responsible for my family’s survival and exit from Germany, come with a responsibility. In
order to be able to live in a country that allows you free practice of your religion, you have to make sure that
other people also have that opportunity, both on a global scale, and on a community level. We are that community
level – this congregation. Keeping this community thriving, so that we can all support each other, and so that
those who aren’t even members yet can have a place to find the same, is our responsibility.
If you haven’t already sent in your pledge card, I challenge you to donate to the Yom Kippur appeal, in an
amount that is meaningful to you and your family, so that we can sustain this community. Like our homes, our
physical building requires maintenance, and that care costs money. As important as that physical structure is, it
is only a representation of our community. We need to care about the building because it facilitates our
community. But, more than that, because on a daily basis, it is filled with people that we care about, our rabbis
and cantor, our religious school teachers, our office staff and our custodians. It is not just bricks, and a roof, and
electricity and plumbing – it is people that love this community and dedicate their lives to caring for it. Our support
of this building is one way we demonstrate our care for them.
The building represents a means to an end, a place you can donate your money and see the tangible results
every day, something you may not be able to do with other charitable donations that you make. Where else will
you get access to pastoral care 24/7? Your donations go toward providing a warm, nurturing environment for our
children to not only receive a religious education, but to become energized and excited about their Jewish lives.
Adult education, camp scholarships, musical programs such as the one on Selichot and others throughout the
year, all of these result from your support. Programs for young families as well as our Renaissance program all
keep our community together.
I am well aware that it might be difficult to find extra money to donate above dues and that is why I used the
word “meaningful.” I am asking you to search within, to determine what is important to you.
If you would like to give more, but simply cannot right now, I challenge you to give of your time. Get involved,
engage with us. Help organize an event, or simply come to one. Come to an Adult Ed class, get involved in social
action and join Brotherhood or Sisterhood. Because the truth is, aside from the money, we need you, your time,
and your talent. Come to Torah Study, organize an outing, come with us to the Jewish Home in River Vale on
Mitzvah Day in November and sing with us. Join the membership committee, or Ways and Means, sign up to
sell gift cards. Come and worship with us on Shabbat. There are many different paths to “meaningful.”
These things take time, and we are all busy and I know that feeling of not having enough time. No one has
“enough” time – I don’t even know what “enough” time means. Frankly, we all have the same amount of time. 24
hours per day, 7 days per week. But, as with our money, we make choices about how we spend it. None of us
has more time than another person, it’s all in how we prioritize.

This summer, there was a wonderful video that was sent to me by several different people, detailing how
every congregation comes equipped with at least one member, an extremely important person, who is there to
get things done. Everyone believes in this person and is counting on them. The video went so far as to give us
their name: “Someone Else.” Thank God for Someone Else – because he will donate and she will volunteer.
“Someone Else” is the person who leaps into action every time there is an idea that starts with the words
“Somebody Should.” I am asking you to be “Someone Else.” We need “you.”
In Genesis 2:18, we are told “Lo tov heyot ha’adam levado,” it is not good for man to dwell alone. We need
companions and community support. I challenge you to be that support, be one of our community’s thin threads.
I challenge you to find that Jewish spark deep in your soul, to jump in, and get involved. Figure out what makes
a difference in the long term and what is for the greater good. Figure out what is Jewishly meaningful to you and
to your family. My wish to be stealth did not hold in the long term because of the meaning I found in giving back
to a community that had given so much to me.
All the best,
Audrey Rosenblatt
BROTHERHOOD NEWS
The Brotherhood kicked off October by Ushering the New Year and Yom Kippur - thanks
to all those who participated, and special thanks to Andy Lieb for coordinating the usher
schedules. The Sukkah building event brought out about 20 men on October 16. Lots of work
and laughs were had by all. On October 20 was the Brotherhood Steak in the Sukkah - a southwestern menu
and scotch tasting.
In the near future the Brotherhood will be hosting the following events:
1. Tuesday, November 8 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Who says you can't mix religion and politics? Not our
Brotherhood - please join us at our free BYOD (desert) Election Night Get Together. Face it, there's
nothing else on TV, and you're going to be keeping an eye on the polls, so why not do it with some
friends, eat something sweet, and have some laughs? Regardless of the results, we guarantee either
you or your appetite will leave satisfied.
2. Brotherhood Breakfast - December 4 at 9:30 AM - Neil Garfinkle will be presenting "A Journey of a
Holocaust Education Teacher." Neil is a United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Fellow, and Program
Liaison of The Summer Seminar of the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers' Program which was
initiated by Vladka Meed in 1984. The seminar is designed for secondary school teachers who implement
Holocaust studies in their classrooms. Neil will discuss the program, his findings, and the goal of
educating children on the Holocaust.
3. Wednesday, December 7 for TASTE Students. With our children online and wired more than ever,
and children identity theft on the rise, the Brotherhood has asked our very own Joel Rosenblatt (head of
Internet Security at Columbia University) to talk to TASTE members about cyber security, identity theft
threats to children, and other dangers posed to kids on the internet - and how to avoid them. Brotherhood
will be providing a pizza dinner for TASTE that evening. A special 'Thank You' to Rabbi Paula for working
with us on this project.
Thank you,
Mario Caveda ([email protected])

Help Grant Holiday Wishes for Our Needy Neighbors
Last holiday season I introduced the charity, Flames of Giving, to the Temple
Avodat Shalom community. Flames of Giving makes buying holiday gifts for the needy
personal. The organization provide a list of recipients and details about their ages and
what they wish for, so you know you are buying a gift that someone truly wants and
needs. I was very thrilled (as was the organizer of Flames of Giving) by the response
last year and how your generosity helped make the holiday season brighter for 50
adults and children.
This year, we have added more people to the list and ask for your help. I have
created a Google spreadsheet with the list of gifts and recipients, which will also be sent out in the temple weekly
announcements (or you can contact me separately to participate). I ask that you sign up to purchase one (or
more) gifts for a needy neighbor to help make their holiday brighter. It will note whether it needs to be wrapped
or not.
We are asking for the gifts to be dropped off at the temple by Sunday, Dec. 4 at noon. I know that the Temple
Avodat Shalom community will again be a great partner to the Flames of Giving organization. Please help by
adopting a neighbor to provide “One small gift, two happy hearts”.
Learn more about the program at http://www.flamesofgiving.com/. If you have any questions, please feel
free to email me at [email protected]. Thanks for your support.

TEMPLE AVODAT SHALOM BIRTHDAY BOOK DONATION PROGRAM
Celebrate your child’s (or grandchild’s) birthday with a book donation to the Temple Avodat Shalom Library!
The program is simple. You send in a donation for $18.00, which will be used toward the purchase of a new
book. The books will be available in the library for your child to select.
On or near their birthday, the librarian will have your child choose a book. A bookplate with your child’s name,
birthday and the school year will then be placed inside this book. Your child will be the first person to check out
this personalized book and bring it home to share. Children with birthdays in June will choose a book in
December, July in January, and August birthdays in February on their "Half Birthday".
Thank you in advance for participating in this wonderful program! If you have any questions, please email

Gary Baskind, A History of Jews in America and Jews in the American Revolution
January 4, 11, 18, 25 Dr. Robert Ellis, God, Germany, the Jews, and the Holocaust
This course explores the causes and consequences of what was arguably the most
horrific event in all of history. Topics include both the long-term origins of the
Holocaust in European racism and anti-Semitism and the more immediate origins
in the dynamics of the Nazi state and the war against the Soviet Union. Particular
attention will be given to debates and controversies, including the motivations of
German and non-German perpetrators, bystanders, and collaborations, the place
of the Jews and non-Jews in Holocaust historiography, the continuities of racism
and genocide and their comparability, and the consequences of the Holocaust for
memory and world politics. We will engage with a variety of topics,
including nationalism and nation-building, revolution and reaction,
industrialization and urbanization, mass politics and culture, Germans' roles and
experiences in two world wars, Nazi racism and genocide, and the theological
implication of the Holocaust for contemporary Jewish thought.

"It's never too early in the year or in a child's life to start thinking about sending him or her to Jewish overnight
camp! Jewish overnight camps offer all the programs that traditional camps have - including special interest
programs like STEM, sports, art and music, computer, 21st century skill building - but also have a magical
element that can only be found at Jewish overnight camp. Diana Diner is your resource at the Jewish Federation
of Northern NJ for all things camp related. As Jewish Federation's Jewish Camp Concierge, she will help guide
you in choosing the camp that is the best fit for your family's needs, arranging visits to camps, and connect you
with other families in your area. In addition, she is the administrator of the One Happy Camper grant, which is a
grant given to all eligible campers going to Jewish overnight camp for the first time. She can be reached at 201
